In susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), the high resolution required to obtain a proper contrast generation leads to a reduced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The application of a denoising filter to produce images with higher SNR and still preserve small structures from excessive blurring is therefore extremely desirable. However, as the distributions of magnitude and phase noise may introduce biases during image restoration, the application of a denoising filter is non-trivial. Taking advantage of the potential multispectral nature of MR images, a multicomponent approach using a Non-Local Means (MNLM) denoising filter may perform better than a component-by-component image restoration method. Here we present a new MNLM-based method (Multicomponent-Imaginary-Real-SWI, hereafter MIR-SWI) to produce SWI images with high SNR and improved conspicuity. Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons of MIR-SWI with the original SWI scheme and previously proposed SWI restoring pipelines showed that MIR-SWI fared consistently better than the other approaches. Noise removal with MIR-SWI also provided improvement in contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and vessel conspicuity at higher factors of phase mask multiplications than the one suggested in the literature for SWI vessel imaging. We conclude that a proper handling of noise in the complex MR dataset may lead to improved image quality for SWI data.

Diagnostic and prognostic significance of extracellular vesicles in prostate cancer drug resistance: A systematic review of the literature

Anna Maria Grimaldi, Marco Salvatore, Carlo Cavaliere

Summary: Our analysis provides a snapshot of the current scenario regarding EVs as potential clinical biomarkers in resistant prostate cancer. Nevertheless, despite many efforts, the use of EV biomarkers in PCa is currently at an early stage: none of the selected EV biomarkers goes beyond preclinical studies, and their translatability is yet far from clinical settings.

The visual encoding of graspable unfamiliar objects

Giovanni Federico, Francois Osiurak, Maria Antonella Brandimonte, Marco Salvatore, Carlo Cavaliere

Summary: This study investigated the visual encoding modalities of participants in a free-observation task using eye-tracking. The results showed that participants allocated their visual-spatial attention differently to the manipulation and functional areas of objects over time. The repetition of stimuli significantly decreased attention to the functional areas, while attention to the manipulation areas remained stable.

Altered Patterns of Brain Glucose Metabolism Involve More Extensive and Discrete Cortical Areas in Treatment-resistant Schizophrenia Patients Compared to Responder Patients and Controls: Results From a Head-to-Head 2-[18F]-FDG-PET Study

Felice Iasevoli, Luigi D'Ambrosio, Mariateresa Ciccarelli, Annarita Barone, Valeria Gaudieri, Sirio Cocozza, Giuseppe Pontillo, Arturo Brunetti, Alberto Cuocolo, Andrea de Bartolomeis, Sabina Pappata

Summary: In this study, FDG-PET was used to compare the cerebral glucose metabolism in patients with treatment resistant schizophrenia (TRS) and schizophrenia responders (nTRS), as well as controls. The results showed that TRS patients exhibited altered metabolism in certain brain regions that were not affected in nTRS patients, suggesting a more severe disrupted functional brain network associated with disorganization symptoms. Additionally, Clz-nR patients showed more significant metabolic reduction compared to Clz-R patients.

Technical note: MAMBA-Multi-pAradigM voxel-Based Analysis: A computational cookbot

Giuseppe Palma, Laura Cella, Serena Monti

Summary: This paper introduces the Multi-pAradigM voxel-Based Analysis (MAMBA) toolbox, which is designed for flexible application of VB analysis in medical imaging and radiation oncology. The toolbox provides open-source functions to compute VB statistical models, derive significance maps using non-parametric permutation inference, and allows for the inclusion of various explanatory variables. The use of MAMBA was demonstrated through realistic examples on a synthetic dataset. MAMBA is freely available for academic and non-commercial use, providing a user-friendly solution for VB analysis.

Simultaneous real-time EEG-fMRI neurofeedback: A systematic review

Giuseppina Ciccarelli, Giovanni Federico, Giulia Mele, Angelica Di Cecca, Miriana Migliaccio, Ciro Rosario Ilardi, Vincenzo Alfano, Marco Salvatore, Carlo Cavaliere

Summary: Neurofeedback (NF) is a biofeedback technique that uses brain activations to modify emotional, cognitive, and behavioral functions. EEG and fMRI are often used separately in NF, but few studies have combined both techniques. This systematic review of 17 EEG-fMRI-NF studies found a lack of homogeneity, making it difficult to draw conclusions about the therapeutic efficacy of NF. More research is needed to fully understand the potential of EEG-fMRI-NF for neurological conditions.

Neural substrates of verbal memory impairment in schizophrenia: A multimodal connectomics study

Mario Tranfa, Felice Iasevoli, Sirio Cocozza, Mariateresa Ciccarelli, Annarita Barone, Arturo Brunetti, Andrea de Bartolomeis, Giuseppe Pontillo

Summary: This study explores the neural substrates of verbal memory impairment in schizophrenia and finds altered connectivity in structural and functional brain networks of patients compared to healthy controls. The aberrant connectivity of sensorimotor networks may be a biomarker of verbal memory impairment in schizophrenia.

Summary: This study investigates the association between gut microbiota and the amyloid cascade in sporadic AD, and examines the potential mediators of the microbiota-gut-brain axis. It finds that specific bacterial genera are associated with immune and endothelial markers, and these markers are associated with amyloid cascade markers in sporadic AD.

Sex differences in functional brain networks involved in interoception: An fMRI study

Vincenzo Alfano, Carlo Cavaliere, Angelica Di Cecca, Giuseppina Ciccarelli, Marco Salvatore, Marco Aiello, Giovanni Federico

Summary: This study used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the functional connectivity of networks involved in interoception between males and females. The results showed that there is a difference in interoceptive ability between biological sexes, with females exhibiting higher scores. Significant correlations were found between interoception scores and functional connectivity in the Salience network and fronto-temporo-parietal brain areas, with a stronger prevalence in females. These findings suggest a female advantage in attention towards internal bodily sensations and highlight common inter-network areas involved in creating the sense of self.

Summary: Kidney microscopy is essential for studying the morphology, physiology, and pathology of kidney tissues, providing important results for diagnosis. Fourier Ptychography (FP) is a microscopy technique that offers high-resolution images and a wide field of view, making it an attractive option for histopathology. This study presents the first comprehensive collection of kidney tissue images captured by an FP microscope, demonstrating the potential of FP microscopy in clinical practice for kidney histopathology.

Summary: This study found that patients with severe COVID-19 had elevated levels of Candida albicans immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies, intestinal Candida overgrowth, mycobiota dysbiosis, and systemic neutrophilia. Transcriptional changes in antifungal immunity pathways and reprogramming of granulocyte myeloid progenitors (GMPs) were observed in patients with severe COVID-19. Mouse models confirmed the impact of C. albicans colonization on lung neutrophilia and pulmonary NETosis during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Patients treated with tocilizumab experienced sustained reductions in C. albicans IgG antibodies titers and GMP transcriptional changes.
