Summary: This research conducted a systematic and comprehensive meta-analysis to determine the association between maternal body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) and the risk of cancer in offspring. The results suggest that high GWG may increase the risk of total cancer in offspring, while low GWG is not associated with the risk. There is no significant association between maternal underweight, overweight/obesity, and the risk of total cancer in offspring. Further research is needed to clarify the potential relevance of maternal BMI and GWG on offspring cancer, especially for specific cancers.

Summary: The study demonstrates that gestational protein restriction leads to early cardiac diseases in offspring, likely associated with fibrosis, myocyte hypertrophy, and abnormal gene expression. These findings suggest a close link between maternal protein restriction, specific gene expression, and progressive heart failure.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that disturbances in early-life gut microbiota can influence adult disease. In this study, the researchers found that maternal chronic kidney disease (CKD) can lead to offspring hypertension, but perinatal supplementation of propionate can prevent this and reverse established hypertension. This protective effect is associated with increased propionate-generating bacteria, elevated plasma propionate levels, higher expression of the SCFA receptor GPR41, improved gut microbiota diversity, and shifts in composition.

Summary: The study found that gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has a negative impact on the development and maturation of offspring mice's islets, causing premature development and abnormal expression of insulin and glucagon. Treatment with probiotics can promote normal development and maturation of GDM-offspring islets by improving intestinal flora disturbance and leaky gut.

Summary: This study conducted a secondary analysis on parental self-efficacy data from a childhood obesity prevention trial. The results showed a statistically significant difference in self-efficacy for promoting healthy dietary behaviors in children between the intervention and control groups, but this difference was deemed clinically unimportant. Further research on interventions and parental self-efficacy in the context of childhood obesity prevention is needed.

Summary: This study aims to explore early obesity prevention interventions by analyzing their behavior change strategies and components. Through comprehensive systematic searches and coding, the researchers will summarize the characteristics of the interventions and compare the applied behavior change techniques for different target behaviors. The findings of this study could provide effective intervention components for the prevention of childhood obesity.

Summary: Behavioural interventions in early life show some effect in reducing childhood overweight and obesity, but their overall effectiveness and differential effects among subgroups remain uncertain. This article presents a protocol for a systematic review with individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of obesity prevention interventions starting antenatally or in the first year after birth, and to explore differential effects among key subgroups.

Summary: This study tested the causality between education and smoking using discordant twin pairs. The results support the hypothesis that education has a causal effect on current smoking status and smoking cessation. Furthermore, genetic factors also contribute to these associations, as seen in the greater differences within dizygotic twin pairs who share only 50% of their segregating genes.

Summary: Through interviews with participants in the PRIMROSE childhood obesity prevention trial, it was found that nurses found the trial rewarding but challenging to combine the intervention with regular work. Study coordinators also faced difficulties in handling the conflicting needs of the research group and the nurses' commitment to usual child health care services. The importance of support, encouragement, simplified intervention, and adaptation of training in motivational interviewing to the setting was emphasized to improve the outcome of future primary prevention of obesity. Stress and lack of time were identified as major barriers to delivering the intervention as intended.
