In leukemia, oral manifestations indicate aberrations in oral microbiota. Microbiota structure is determined by both host and environmental factors. In human hosts, how health status shapes the composition of oral microbiota is largely unknown. Taking advantage of advances in high-throughput sequencing, we compared the composition of supragingival plaque microbiota of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) pediatric patients with healthy controls. The oral microbiota of leukemia patients had lower richness and less diversity compared to healthy controls. Microbial samples clustered into two major groups, one of ALL patients and another of healthy children, with different structure and composition. Abundance changes of certain taxa including the Phylum Firmicutes, the Class Bacilli, the Order Lactobacillales, the Family Aerococcaceae and Carnobacteriaceae, as well as the Genus Abiotrophia and Granulicatella were associated with leukemia status. ALL patients demonstrated a structural imbalance of the oral microbiota, characterized by reduced diversity and abundance alterations, possibly involved in systemic infections, indicating the importance of immune status in shaping the structure of oral microbiota.

The Bio-Aging of Biofilms on Behalf of Various Oral Status on Different Titanium Implant Materials

Min Liao, Yangyang Shi, Enni Chen, Yuke Shou, Dongyue Dai, Wenpan Xian, Biao Ren, Shimeng Xiao, Lei Cheng

Summary: This study investigated the effects of bio-aging on titanium implants in the oral microenvironment. Different surface treatments were used, and biofilms were established using different bacteria and saliva from healthy individuals and patients with periodontitis. After 30 days of bio-aging, the surface morphology, chemical composition, and water contact angles were measured. The adhesion of cells and biofilms was also evaluated. The results showed that the polished samples had no significant changes, while the MAO- and SLA-treated samples showed mild corrosion. The HA-coated samples were the most vulnerable, especially when exposed to saliva from patients with periodontitis. These findings highlight the importance of oral hygiene and periodontal health for long-term implant success.

Disaggregated Nano-Hydroxyapatite (DnHAP) with Inhibitory Effects on Biofilms and Demineralization

Y. Huang, Q. Han, X. Peng, B. Ren, J. Li, X. Zhou, M. Li, L. Cheng

Summary: This investigation aimed to specify the inhibitory effects of disaggregated nano-hydroxyapatite (DnHAP) on regrown biofilms and demineralization. The results showed that DnHAP can inhibit the metabolism, lactic acid production, biofilm structure, and biomass of regrown single/dual-species biofilms. In addition, DnHAP treatment can reduce the metabolic activity and lactic acid production of saliva-derived biofilms. Therefore, DnHAP could be a promising solution for managing regrown biofilms and preventing dental caries.

Buddhism and M&A performance: Evidence from China

Wen Shi, Xiaogang Bi

Summary: This research examines the impact of Buddhism on mergers & acquisitions (M&As) performance using data from 4622 M&A transactions of Chinese public firms between 2004 and 2018. The findings provide ample evidence that acquirers located in regions with a higher intensity of Buddhism achieve better short-term and long-term performance after the merger. Furthermore, the study reveals that state ownership plays a crucial role in mitigating this effect, and the value creation is driven by higher deal completion rates and fewer violation cases for acquiring firms. Finally, the study addresses the issue of endogeneity, and the results remain unchanged.

Akkermansia muciniphila inhibited the periodontitis caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum

Bingqing Song, Wenpan Xian, Yan Sun, Lichen Gou, Qiang Guo, Xuedong Zhou, Biao Ren, Lei Cheng

Summary: Periodontitis, caused by plaque biofilm, is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and is associated with systemic diseases. Fusobacterium nucleatum plays a role in periodontitis through its virulence factors and coaggregating effects with other periodontal pathogens. Traditional periodontal treatment is time-consuming and expensive, while antibiotic use may lead to oral microbial resistance. Akkermansia muciniphila, a probiotic, can regulate microbial balance and is inversely correlated with various diseases. Co-culture experiments showed that A. muciniphila inhibited the expression of F. nucleatum's virulence gene. Inflammatory effects of F. nucleatum on gingival epithelial cells were inhibited by A. muciniphila through modulation of the TLR/MyD88/NF-kappaB pathway and secretion of inflammatory factors. Animal experiments demonstrated the inhibition of F. nucleatum-induced periodontitis by A. muciniphila in mice.
