We investigated the role of common genetic variation in immune-related genes on breast cancer disease-free survival (DFS) in Korean women. 107 breast cancer patients of the Seoul Breast Cancer Study (SEBCS) were selected for this study. A total of 2,432 tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 283 immune-related genes were genotyped with the GoldenGate Oligonucleotide pool assay (OPA). A multivariate Cox-proportional hazard model and polygenic risk score model were used to estimate the effects of SNPs on breast cancer prognosis. Harrell's C index was calculated to estimate the predictive accuracy of polygenic risk score model. Subsequently, an extended gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA-SNP) was conducted to approximate the biological pathway. In addition, to confirm our results with current evidence, previous studies were systematically reviewed. Sixty-two SNPs were statistically significant at p-value less than 0.05. The most significant SNPs were rs1952438 in SOCS4 gene (hazard ratio (HR) = 11.99, 95% CI = 3.62-39.72, P = 4.84E-05), rs2289278 in TSLP gene (HR = 4.25, 95% CI = 2.10-8.62, P = 5.99E-05) and rs2074724 in HGF gene (HR = 4.63, 95% CI = 2.18-9.87, P = 7.04E-05). In the polygenic risk score model, the HR of women in the 3rd tertile was 6.78 (95% CI = 1.48-31.06) compared to patients in the 1st tertile of polygenic risk score. Harrell's C index was 0.813 with total patients and 0.924 in 4-fold cross validation. In the pathway analysis, 18 pathways were significantly associated with breast cancer prognosis (P<0.1). The IL-6R, IL-8, IL-10RB, IL-12A, and IL-12B was associated with the prognosis of cancer in data of both our study and a previous study. Therefore, our results suggest that genetic polymorphisms in immune-related genes have relevance to breast cancer prognosis among Korean women.

Blood DNA methylation signatures are associated with social determinants of health among survivors of childhood cancer

Summary: Social epigenomics is a field that investigates the biological effects of social determinants of health (SDOH) through DNA methylation analysis. In this study, researchers found significant associations between DNA methylation, SDOH factors (such as education, income, and deprivation), and genes related to smoking. These findings suggest that social factors can influence health outcomes through epigenetic mechanisms.

Socioeconomic inequality in compliance with precautions and health behavior changes during the COVID-19 outbreak: an analysis of the Korean Community Health Survey 2020

Ga Bin Lee, Sun Jae Jung, Yang Yiyi, Jea Won Yang, Hoang Manh Thang, Hyeon Chang Kim

Summary: This study examined socioeconomic inequalities in compliance with precautions and health behavior changes during the COVID-19 outbreak in Korea. The results showed that individuals with lower education or income levels were more likely to not comply with safety precautions and had increased smoking and changes in sleep duration. Conversely, higher education and income levels were associated with decreased physical activity and increased delivery food consumption. Additionally, lower education and income levels were associated with increased alcohol drinking in younger men but with higher levels in younger women. These findings suggest the importance of developing customized strategies to address the unique characteristics of different population groups and mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Summary: The study aimed to summarize the association between the time spent on social media platforms during the COVID-19 quarantine and mental health outcomes, specifically anxiety and depression. The analysis demonstrated that excessive time spent on social media platforms was significantly associated with higher likelihood of experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Association between dietary and suicidal behaviors in adolescents in Korea based on the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2015-2020)

Youngrong Lee, Ye Jin Jeon, Jee-Seon Shim, Sun Jae Jung

Summary: This study examined the relationship between dietary behaviors and suicidal behaviors in Korean adolescents, with a focus on the differences in this relationship among children of immigrant parents. The findings suggest that unfavorable dietary behaviors, such as skipping meals and consuming unhealthy foods, are associated with a higher likelihood of suicidal behaviors. This association appears to be more prominent in adolescents with immigrant parents.

Risk of suicide death in psychiatric patients according to the level of continuity of care and area deprivation: A population-based nested case-control study

Summary: In this nested case-control study, poor continuity of care and higher area deprivation were found to be associated with an increased risk of suicide in psychiatric patients. The combination of poor continuity of care and the highest area deprivation showed a negative synergistic effect on suicide risk. Age acted as an effect modifier in the relationship between suicide risk and poor continuity of care as well as suicide risk and higher area deprivation.

Association between periodontal diseases and bipolar disorder: implications for therapeutic interventions

Ji Hyun Baek, Sun Jae Jung, Amy Peters, Alpdogan Kantarci, Andrew A. Nierenberg

Summary: Periodontal diseases are more common in patients with bipolar disorder. The association may be attributed to poor oral hygiene, the effects of inflammatory mediators, direct invasion of oral microbiota, modulation of the neurotransmitter system, and impact on the vagus nerve and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Further clinical studies are needed to explore the relationship between periodontal diseases and bipolar disorder.
