Summary: This study synthesized current evidence on prognostic factors for predicting postoperative pain after knee or hip replacement. The findings suggest that various preoperative factors, including race, opioid use, preoperative function, neuropathic pain symptoms, and anxiety, are associated with postoperative chronic pain. Additionally, certain comorbidities, such as heart disease and lung disease, are not associated with postoperative chronic pain.

Summary: This review provides an overview of quality indicators for knee and hip osteoarthritis care, highlighting differences in healthcare settings and emphasizing the importance of carefully selecting indicators based on the context to monitor care quality effectively. The analysis revealed variations in process of care indicators between healthcare settings and underscored the need to review indicators against current guidelines before implementation.

Summary: For knee osteoarthritis, a multimodal intervention strategy is recommended, with the early use of symptomatic slow-acting drugs, background treatment including patient education, weight loss and exercise, advanced pharmacotherapy if needed, and a shared decision-making process with healthcare providers is important.

Summary: There is a lack of consensus on the need for Venous Thrombo Embolism (VTE) prophylaxis following arthroscopic knee surgery and open soft tissue knee reconstruction. This study conducted a modified Delphi questionnaire to gather opinions from international experts. The results showed that there are certain patient factors, prolonged surgery duration, and family history of thrombogenic events that should be taken into consideration for prophylaxis. The study concluded that there is a select group of patients undergoing arthroscopic surgery that justify the usage of VTE prophylaxis.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a consensus among experts on early onset dementia (YOD) about the essential information that health professionals need to know. The expert panel reached a high consensus on the importance of broad professional knowledge related to the identification, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of YOD. The findings have implications for the delivery of support and care services for YOD patients and their support persons, as well as the design of educational resources for non-expert health professionals.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether specific gait outcomes previously linked to symptomatic medial compartment knee OA are unique to knee OA. The results showed that there were no differences in knee joint kinematics and moments between the knee OA and asymptomatic groups, but the knee adduction moments were greater in the knee OA group compared to the hip OA group. The knee OA group also exhibited a higher activation ratio of the lateral to medial hamstrings compared to the hip OA and asymptomatic groups. This suggests that medial and lateral hamstring muscle activation levels may provide utility as a knee OA gait biomarker.

Summary: This research explores how uncertainty is involved in low back pain care and how clinicians manage the accompanying emotions and tensions. The study identifies three themes: the sources of uncertainty, neglecting complexity, and attending to uncertainty. The findings emphasize the need for a healthcare culture that recognizes and addresses the emotional dimensions of patient-clinician interactions in dealing with uncertainty.

Summary: This study aims to identify neurobiological and psychological risk factors for the development of chronic low back pain. Factors such as medical history, age, and emotional state have a significant impact on the development of chronic low back pain. Neurobiological risk factors explain an additional 15% of the variance in pain intensity at 6 months.
