Summary: This study revealed the hepatotoxic mechanism of herbal medicines containing pyrrolizidine alkaloids, showing that these compounds induce cell apoptosis by generating excessive reactive oxygen species and changing mitochondrial membrane potential. This study provided direct evidence of Intermedine inducing hepatotoxicity through mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, enhancing the understanding of PA toxicity.

Summary: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a debilitating neurological disorder that impairs mobility, sensory functions, and autonomic responses. Loss of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) has been associated with poor recovery in SCI patients. This study shows that quercetin prevents ferroptosis in OPCs by inhibiting the Id2/transferrin pathway, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic agent for SCI.

Summary: Sub-acute and/or acute insults sustained during a severe burn injury impair pulmonary function. This study found that adults with well-healed burn injuries have lower pulmonary function decades after injury. Future research should focus on rehabilitation strategies to improve pulmonary function among adults with well-healed burn injuries.

Summary: In this study, six UGTs were characterized, two of which were novel. PnUGT71A3 catalyzes the glycosylation of protopanaxatriol (PPT) and F1 to form Rh1 and Rg1, respectively, and also the glycosylation of protopanaxadiol (PPD)-type Rg3 to generate Rd. PnUGT94M1 regioselectively catalyzes the rhamnosylation of the C6 glucose of PPT-type ginsenosides Rg1 and Rh1, generating ginsenosides Re and Rg2, respectively, and is UDP-beta-L-rhamnose (UDP-Rha)-dependent.

Summary: In this study, self-double-emulsifying drug delivery system enteric-coated capsules (PNS-SDE-ECC) were used to enhance the oral bioavailability and anti-inflammatory effects of Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS). PNS-SDE-ECC significantly promoted the absorption of PNS in the intestinal tract and exhibited sustained release and stability. Compared to gastric capsules, PNS-SDE-ECC increased the relative bioavailability of NGR1, GRg1, GRe, GRb1, and GRd by 4.83, 10.78, 9.25, 3.58, and 4.63 times, respectively. Furthermore, PNS-SDE-ECC reduced OXZ-induced inflammatory damage in the colon by regulating cytokine expression.

Summary: In this study, it was found that chlorogenic acid (CGA) effectively improved non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) by inhibiting hepatic inflammation. CGA alleviated liver oxidative injury by activating nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and reduced liver steatosis by up-regulating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR alpha). Furthermore, CGA blocked the LPS-TLR4-MyD88 signaling pathway and attenuated hepatic inflammation.

Summary: This paper reports the synthesis of multifunctional carbon dots (CFCDs) using herbal medicine as a precursor, and investigates their fluorescent properties and biological activities. The obtained CFCDs have a graphitic structure, abundant functional groups, high aqueous solubility, and excellent stability. CFCDs exhibit pH-dependent fluorescence properties and low cytotoxicity, making them suitable for cell imaging. Moreover, CFCDs have good hemostatic effects and can promote platelet aggregation. CFCDs have potential for wide application in the medical domain.

Summary: A practical TLC-direct bioassay method was established for screening and evaluating antioxidant activity. The method involved a series of reactions, including the production of lipid peroxides by UV irradiation of linoleic acid and the conversion of peroxides into malondialdehyde. A dot blot test using TLC separation showed that substances with anti-lipid peroxidation activity appeared as white spots/zones on a red background. The method was validated for selectivity, sensitivity, linearity, precision, and recovery, and was successfully used to identify active antioxidant constituents from Perilla fruits.

Summary: This study investigates the toxicity and toxicokinetic characteristics of a toxic PA N-oxide, senecionine N-oxide, using a UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A4 humanized mouse model (hUGT1A4 mouse model) and wild-type mice. Results show that senecionine N-oxide exposure caused less toxicity in hUGT1A4 mice, and N-glucuronidation occurred exclusively in hUGT1A4 mice. There were also differences in toxicokinetic characteristics between hUGT1A4 mice and wild-type mice, with enhanced clearance of senecionine N-oxide and senecionine in hUGT1A4 mice, leading to detoxification.

Summary: The Lycium genus, including Lycium barbarum L., Lycium chinense Mill., and Lycium ruthenicum Murr., has been used as a source of medicines and nutrient supplements in China for thousands of years. These fruits have been extensively studied and commercialized for their health-related properties, including antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-tumor, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective effects. However, there is limited systematic and comprehensive information available on the Lycium genus.
