The understanding of mixing and mass transfers of nutrients and drugs in the small intestine is of prime importance in creating formulations that manipulate absorption and digestibility. We characterised mixing using a dye tracer methodology during spontaneous longitudinal contractions, i.e. pendular activity, in 10 cm segments of living proximal duodenum of the rat maintained ex-vivo. The residence time distribution (RTD) of the tracer was equivalent to that generated by a small number (8) of continuous stirred tank reactors in series. Fluid mechanical modelling, that was based on real sequences of longitudinal contractions, predicted that dispersion should occur mainly in the periphery of the lumen. Comparison with the experimental RTD showed that centriluminal dispersion was accurately simulated whilst peripheral dispersion was underestimated. The results therefore highlighted the potential importance of micro-phenomena such as microfolding of the intestinal mucosa in peripheral mixing. We conclude that macro-scale modeling of intestinal flow is useful in simulating centriluminal mixing, whereas multi-scales strategies must be developed to accurately model mixing and mass transfers at the periphery of the lumen.

Summary: High throughput fabrication of microcapsules with uniform size and mechanical properties can be achieved using lab-scale emulsification equipment and complex shell assembly methods. By optimizing process parameters and developing strategies, desired elastic properties can be obtained based on the kinetics of shell assembly.

Summary: Controlling the assembly of polyelectrolytes and surfactant at liquid-liquid interfaces is important for fabricating soft materials with specific physical properties. The kinetics and properties of the assembly process of a positively charged biopolymer, chitosan, with an anionic fatty acid at the water-oil interface were studied. The results revealed that the interfacial complexation is a multi-step process.

Steady streaming flow induced by active biological microstructures; application to small intestine villi

Midhun Puthumana Melepattu, Clement de Loubens

Summary: Physiological transport of fluid at small scales is often achieved by microscopic active fingerlike structures that induce non-symmetric flow to break the symmetry of creeping flow. However, symmetric oscillations of these microstructures can also generate irreversible flow on long time scales. Three-dimensional simulations showed that steady streaming flow (SSF) generated by oscillating fingerlike structures can induce mass transfers between the bulk and the periphery, with vortices at the tip of the villi playing a key role. Additionally, secondary vortices outside the steady boundary layer were observed, indicating the complexity of the flow phenomena.

Summary: A mechanistic understanding of the physiological process of defaecation is important for improving medical care of patients with defaecation disorders. In this study, complex fluid dynamics modelling of video defaecography was used to analyze the velocity, pressure, and stress during the expulsion of soft stool-like materials. The findings showed that pressure gradient and the geometry of the anal canal play significant roles in the evacuation flow rate.
