The present work intends to evaluate the use of immediate loaded orthodontic screws in a growing model, and to study the specific bone response. Thirty-two screws (half of stainless steel and half of titanium) were inserted in the alveolar bone of 8 growing pigs. The devices were immediately loaded with a 100 g orthodontic force. Two loading periods were assessed: 4 and 12 weeks. Both systems of screws were clinically assessed. Histological observations and histomorphometric analysis evaluated the percent of bone-to-implant contact and static and dynamic bone parameters in the vicinity of the devices (test zone) and in a bone area located 1.5 cm posterior to the devices (control zone). Both systems exhibit similar responses for the survival rate; 87.5% and 81.3% for stainless steel and titanium respectively (p = 0.64; 4-week period), and 62.5% and 50.0% for stainless steel and titanium respectively (p = 0.09; 12-week period). No significant differences between the devices were found regarding the percent of bone-to-implant contact (p = 0.1) or the static and dynamic bone parameters. However, the 5% threshold of bone-to-implant contact was obtained after 4 weeks with the stainless steel devices, leading to increased survival rate values. Bone in the vicinity of the miniscrew implants showed evidence of a significant increase in bone trabecular thickness when compared to bone in the control zone (p = 0.05). In our study, it is likely that increased trabecular thickness is a way for low density bone to respond to the stress induced by loading.

Dental practice-based research networks (D-PBRN) worldwide: A scoping review

Thibault Canceill, Paul Monsarrat, Edouard Faure-Clement, Marie Tohme, Jean-Noel Vergnes, Brigitte Grosgogeat

Summary: The dental practice-based research networks (D-PBRN) play an important role in structuring clinical research in private practices and increasing research scope. The majority of scientific production is from the USA, and D-PBRN helps in studying a higher number of diverse centers, bridging the gap between private practice and research.

Summary: The RDT/TDT ratio shows potential in predicting pulp exposure, but issues with measurement errors and poor inter-rater agreements suggest the need for further research on developing an automated process to improve reliability.

Comparison of physical and biological properties of a flowable fiber reinforced and bulk filling composites

Summary: The study evaluated the mechanical, biological, and polymerization behavior of a flowable bulk-fill composite with fibers as a dispersed phase in vitro. EXF showed superior fracture toughness, shrinkage stress, and less cytotoxic effect compared to FBF and SDR. All three composites exhibited slight cytotoxic effects on day one but an increase in metabolic activity was observed in cells treated with EXF extracts on day 5.

The effect of therapeutic radiation on dental enamel and dentin: A systematic review

Summary: This systematic review aims to summarize the effects of therapeutic radiation on tooth properties and emphasizes the need for expertise in materials science in dental hard-tissue characterization. The findings suggest a significant impact of radiation on the organic matrix of dentin, while the chemical properties of dental enamel are less modified. Better understanding of the degradation mechanisms of enamel and dentin would contribute to the development of new preventive and therapeutic methods for patients undergoing radiotherapy.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the immune response and neutralizing activity against SARS-CoV-2 among primary health care workers (PHCW) in France and assess the association between neutralizing activity and various factors, including the COVID-19 vaccination scheme. The study found that individuals with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection were more likely to have neutralizing antibodies, regardless of vaccination status. Among those vaccinated with two doses, the time since vaccination was associated with the detection of neutralizing antibodies.

Summary: This study describes the knowledge, opinions, and practices of French general dental practitioners regarding the management of defective restorations (DRs). The findings indicate that a significant proportion of practitioners do not make sufficient use of DR repair in their clinical practice, with a lack of knowledge being a potential factor.

Toxicological Risks of the Cobalt-Chromium Alloys in Dentistry: A Systematic Review

Summary: This review analyzed the cytocompatibility of Co-Cr dental alloys. In vitro studies indicated that Co-Cr alloys have good cytocompatibility compared to Ni alloys, while in vivo studies found that Co-Cr rarely causes allergic reactions and irritation, except for individuals allergic to Co or Cr. Further research on titanium-based materials is needed for better results.

Summary: This study assessed the topographical and physical properties of a minimally invasive implant and compared its biological behavior to a gold standard implant. The findings showed that both implants exhibited equivalent biological development for human gingival fibroblasts and osteoblast-like cells. In certain aspects, the minimally invasive implant performed better.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of a synthetic amelogenin-derived peptide (ADP-5) on periodontal cell behavior and compared it to a commercial gel Emdogain((R)). The findings showed that ADP-5 enhanced cell proliferation and remineralization, and the ADP-5 experimental hydrogel exhibited similar biological behavior to Emdogain((R)) in terms of cell colonization, mineralization, and inflammatory profile.

3D Electrospun Polycaprolactone Scaffolds to Assess Human Periodontal Ligament Cells Mechanobiological Behaviour

Summary: This study evaluated the capability of a 3D fibrous scaffold to transmit mechanical loading to periodontal ligament cells. The results showed that dynamic loading had an impact on cell morphology, with fewer visible cells on the scaffold surface and decreased expression of actin filament. Additionally, dynamic loading tended to decrease Alkaline Phosphatase activity and Interleukin-6 production, while these biomolecular markers increased after static culture for 21 days. These findings suggest that load transmission occurs in the 3D electrospun PCL fibrous scaffolds, providing a valuable tool for studying periodontal mechanobiology.
