Summary: The study identified risk factors for thyroid cancer in a high-incidence region in Iran, including benign thyroid diseases, family history, radiation exposure, and family history of other cancers. Protective factors were found to be high blood pressure, higher education, unsaturated fat consumption, and being married. Community-based interventions such as reducing radiation exposure and screening family members with underlying thyroid diseases may help prevent or detect thyroid cancer early. Further studies on the health effects of local herbs are recommended.

Summary: The rising incidence rate of prostate cancer (PCa) worldwide is a concern. The association between human papillomavirus (HPV) and PCa has been widely investigated. This case-control study in Taiwan found a slightly significant association between HPV infection and PCa, but the focus should be on other risk factors such as dietary habits, personal lifestyle, and family history.

Summary: This study found that individuals with ocular allergic conditions are more likely to have Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy (FED) in Taiwan. The study also found that in Taiwan, more than half of the FED patients were aged ≥ 45 years old and there was an equal female-to-male ratio. Patients with lower income and living in northern Taiwan had higher odds of developing FED.

Summary: High-position imperforate anus is associated with an increased risk of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) compared to low-position imperforate anus. Children with imperforate anus, along with CAKUT, hydronephrosis, or UTI, have a higher risk of developing VUR. Regular screening and early interventions are recommended to prevent renal damage in these patients. Additionally, chromosomal analysis should be considered to rule out Down syndrome.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the real-world experience of sorafenib in treating advanced DTC patients in Taiwan. Most patients started with a dose of 200 mg twice daily and had a mean daily maintenance dose of 433 mg. The most common toxicity of sorafenib was hand foot skin reaction (69%), followed by diarrhea (42%), and skin rash (33%).

Summary: Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (pNET) is a type of pancreatic tumor with neuroendocrine differentiation. Early stage pNET can be treated with surgical resection for long-term survival, while pNET with metastasis has a poor prognosis. In this study, it was found that c-Myc overexpression is associated with lymph node metastasis in pNET xenograft mice. Combination therapy using an mTOR inhibitor and c-Myc inhibitor or VEGFC-neutralizing protein reduced lymph node metastasis in mice with c-Myc overexpression, indicating potential therapeutic targets for pNET.

Summary: The incidence of NETs in Taiwan has been on the rise in recent decades, with a notable improvement in the survival rate of pancreatic NETs. Female and younger patients tend to have better survival rates, and those diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 show improved survival compared to earlier years.

Summary: This study found a positive association between seropositivity to HPV16 E7 and oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) risk, particularly among nonbetel quid or noncigarette users. Seropositivity to HPV16 E7 also showed moderate agreement with P16 expression in OPC, suggesting that HPV may be an important risk factor for OPC in Taiwan.

Summary: The study in Taiwan found no significant association between alcohol consumption and pancreatic cancer risk, even at high levels of drinking. There was also no significant association between alcohol use and pancreatic cancer among individuals genetically susceptible to the carcinogenic effect of alcohol.
