Summary: This study compared the risk factors and characteristics of neonatal sepsis patients based on the type of catheter used and birth weight classification. The results showed that infants with low birth weight and those requiring prolonged parenteral nutrition were more likely to develop catheter-related bloodstream infections. The type of venous catheter used did not affect blood culture results, and the etiology of sepsis did not differ between infants with different birth weights.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between indirect inflammation markers and hypertension in people living with HIV (PLWH). The results showed positive associations between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), neutrophil-to-monocyte ratio (NMR) and hypertensive risk in PLWH. Alleviating inflammation may help control or delay the occurrence of hypertension in PLWH.

Summary: This study investigated the association of metabolic syndrome (MS) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels with the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) in a large community-based population. The results showed that MS combined with a high hs-CRP level is associated with an increased risk for AF in the Chinese population, indicating a potential combined effect of these conditions on AF risk.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide. Lipid-lowering agents used in the treatment of CVD may also have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. This review aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory properties of currently available lipid-lowering medications, dietary supplements, and novel drugs.

Summary: There is increasing evidence that C-reactive protein (CRP) can mediate inflammatory reactions by binding with extracellular vesicles (EVs), and an adsorbent can effectively remove free CRP and CRP+ EVs to reduce inflammation.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether ambulation ability, albumin, and C-reactive protein can predict 28-day mortality in elderly patients with sepsis. The study found that the combination of ambulation ability with albumin and C-reactive protein can be used to predict mortality in elderly patients with sepsis.

Summary: This study evaluated a non-commercial turbidimetric CRP assay for monitoring early-onset neonatal sepsis, showing different serum CRP slopes among different birth weight categories and the predictive value of the serum CRP difference and birth weight for the outcome of septic newborns. The turbidimetric CRP assay was found to be a potential novel tool for managing neonatal sepsis in sub-Saharan Africa, with its simplicity and low cost making it well-suited for use in developing countries.

Summary: Detecting and predicting bacteremic sepsis in preterm and term neonates is challenging. This study identified different risk factors and predictive markers for early-onset and late-onset neonatal sepsis. PCT and PLT count were accurate diagnostic serum markers for early-onset sepsis, while WBC count was useful for late-onset sepsis.

Summary: COVID-19 patients are at higher risk of developing thrombosis, both microvascular and macrovascular. Therapeutic heparin may be beneficial for noncritically ill hospitalized patients, while prophylactic-dose heparin is recommended for critically ill patients. Collaborative research and funding have improved the care of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate whether neonatal acute kidney injury (AKI) was documented in NICU discharge summaries and estimate if nephrology consultation mediated this association. The results showed a low prevalence of AKI documentation at NICU discharge. AKI severity and serum creatinine (SCr)-only AKI increased the odds of AKI documentation. Nephrology consultation mediated the associations of AKI severity and diagnostic criteria with documentation.

Summary: This study assessed the association between stroke risk factors and incident stroke, and evaluated whether the magnitude of this association is uniform across different age groups. The results showed that the associations of hypertension and diabetes with stroke significantly decreased in older age groups, while the associations of smoking, atrial fibrillation, and left ventricular hypertrophy with stroke did not vary with age.
