Background: gene expression. Dysregulated expression of miRNAs has been described in various diseases and may contribute to related pathologic processes. Our aim was to examine circulating miRNA-146a levels in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (new-T2DM) patients from a Chinese Han population. Methodology/Principal Findings: Circulating miRNA-146a was extracted from plasma samples of 90 new-T2DM patients and 90 age-and sex-matched controls. Quantitative PCR assessment revealed that circulating miRNA-146a levels were significantly elevated in new-T2DM patients compared with controls. Participants in the highest tertile of circulating miRNA-146a levels showed a notably higher risk for new-T2DM (crude OR 4.333, 95% CI, 1.935 to 9.705, P = 0.001) than persons in the lowest tertile. Controlling for known risk factors and some biochemical indicators did not attenuate the aforementioned association. In addition, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves generated for miRNA-146a revealed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.725 (95% CI, 0.651 to 0.799, P < 0.001). Moreover, higher circulating miRNA-146a levels were significantly associated with higher plasma heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) concentrations (beta coefficient = 0.131, P < 0.001) and lower HOMA-beta (beta coefficient = -0.153, P = 0.015). Conclusions/Significance: We found that circulating miRNA-146a levels were significantly elevated in new-T2DM patients compared with healthy controls. Whether expression of circulating miRNA-146a holds predictive value for T2DM warrants further investigations.

Systematic review of human biomonitoring studies of ethylenethiourea, a urinary biomarker for exposure to dithiocarbamate fungicides

Katrina Stadler, Xueshu Li, Buyun Liu, Wei Bao, Kai Wang, Hans-Joachim Lehmler

Summary: Toxicological and epidemiological studies suggest potential health risks from exposure to DTC fungicides, but limited information is available on human exposure. This systematic review examines global human exposure levels to DTC pesticides and finds that levels in the NHANES 2003-2008 population appear lower compared to most identified studies. More recent data on exposure are needed, especially in countries where DTC pesticides are still in use.

Phthalates and attributable mortality: A population-based longitudinal cohort study and cost analysis

Leonardo Trasande, Buyun Liu, Wei Bao

Summary: The study found that high-molecular weight phthalate metabolites, especially DEHP, were associated with increased mortality. Extrapolating to the 55-64 year old American population, the estimated attributable deaths related to phthalate exposure exceeded 90,000, with lost economic productivity in the billions of dollars.

Meal Skipping and Shorter Meal Intervals Are Associated with Increased Risk of All-Cause and Cardiovascular Disease Mortality among US Adults

Summary: This study examined the associations between meal frequency, skipping, and intervals with all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality. Eating one meal per day was associated with increased risk of all-cause and CVD mortality compared to eating three meals per day. Skipping breakfast was associated with increased risk of CVD mortality, while skipping lunch or dinner was associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Efficacy of Diet on Fatigue and Quality of Life in Multiple Sclerosis A Systematic Review and Network Meta-analysis of Randomized Trials

Linda G. Snetselaar, Joshua J. Cheek, Sara Shuger Fox, Heather S. Healy, Marin L. Schweizer, Wei Bao, John Kamholz, Tyler J. Titcomb

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of different dietary approaches in managing MS-related fatigue and quality of life. The findings suggest that the Paleolithic, low-fat, and Mediterranean diets may reduce fatigue and improve physical and mental QoL. However, the low quality of the included trials limits the strength of these conclusions.

Summary: This systematic review summarizes the efficacy of lifestyle interventions in reducing BMI and metabolic risk factors for overweight/obese Chinese children. The findings suggest that lifestyle interventions are effective, especially when they include multiple components, last longer than one year, and are conducted among teenagers.

Association of Serum Uric Acid With All-Cause and Cardiovascular Mortality in Diabetes

Benchao Li, Liangkai Chen, Xueting Hu, Ting Tan, Jiajia Yang, Wei Bao, Shuang Rong

Summary: This study found that serum uric acid (SUA) level is associated with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in individuals with diabetes. Higher SUA levels are associated with increased risks of all-cause and CVD mortality. Interventional studies are needed to evaluate the health effect of treatments to lower SUA levels in clinical practice.

Effects of intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring in adult type 1 diabetes patients with suboptimal glycaemic control: A multi-centre randomized controlled trial

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring without alarms (isCGM) improves glycaemic control over capillary blood glucose monitoring (BGM) among adult type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients with suboptimal control. The results showed that compared with BGM, the use of isCGM resulted in a statistically significant improvement in glycaemic control after a 24-week intervention.

Association of calcium and vitamin D supplementation with cancer incidence and cause-specific mortality in Black women: Extended follow-up of the Women's Health Initiative calcium-vitamin D trial

Ikuko Kato, Jun Sun, Theresa A. Hastert, Judy Abrams, Joseph C. Larson, Wei Bao, Aladdin H. Shadyab, Charles Mouton, Lihong Qi, Lisa Warsinger Martin, JoAnn E. Manson

Summary: Low circulating vitamin D levels are more prevalent in Black than White individuals. Calcium plus vitamin D supplementation does not reduce risks of cancer, CVD, or other major causes of death in Black women overall. Other medical, behavioral, or social interventions should be considered to narrow health disparities related to these outcomes. However, further investigation is needed for colorectal cancer.

Association between Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Concentrations and Respiratory Infection among United States Adults

Benchao Li, Buyun Liu, Wei Bao, Shuang Rong

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and respiratory infection. The findings showed that individuals with lower serum 25(OH)D concentrations had a higher risk of respiratory infection, particularly head or chest cold, as well as influenza, pneumonia, and ear infections. Lower serum 25(OH)D concentrations were associated with a higher risk of head or chest cold in obese adults. This study highlights the potential protective effect of vitamin D on respiratory health.

Summary: This study examines the association between the ketogenic ratio and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in postmenopausal women. The results show that higher ketogenic ratios are associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes. However, the number of participants following a ketogenic diet in this study was very limited.

Association between urinary phthalate biomarker concentrations and adiposity among postmenopausal women

Gabriela Vieyra, Susan E. Hankinson, Youssef Oulhote, Laura N. Vandenberg, Lesley Tinker, JoAnn E. Manson, Aladdin H. Shadyab, Cynthia A. Thomson, Wei Bao, Matthew Allison, Andrew O. Odegaard, Katherine W. Reeves

Summary: This study evaluated the associations between urinary phthalate biomarkers and visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue. The findings showed positive associations between certain phthalate biomarkers and visceral adipose tissue three years later, as well as a positive association between another phthalate biomarker and subcutaneous adipose tissue. The study provides supportive evidence for the relationship between phthalate compounds and abdominal fat accumulation, contributing to a better understanding of the link between obesity and chronic diseases.
