Nitrogen cycle is a critical biogeochemical process of the oceans. The nitrogen fixation by sponge cyanobacteria was early observed. Until recently, sponges were found to be able to release nitrogen gas. However the gene-level evidence for the role of bacterial symbionts from different species sponges in nitrogen gas release is limited. And meanwhile, the quanitative analysis of nitrogen cycle-related genes of sponge microbial symbionts is relatively lacking. The nirK gene encoding nitrite reductase which catalyzes soluble nitrite into gas NO and nosZ gene encoding nitrous oxide reductase which catalyzes N2O into N-2 are two key functional genes in the complete denitrification pathway. In this study, using nirK and nosZ genes as markers, the potential of bacterial symbionts in six species of sponges in the release of N-2 was investigated by phylogenetic analysis and real-time qPCR. As a result, totally, 2 OTUs of nirK and 5 OTUs of nosZ genes were detected by gene library-based saturated sequencing. Difference phylogenetic diversity of nirK and nosZ genes were observed at OTU level in sponges. Meanwhile, real-time qPCR analysis showed that Xestospongia testudinaria had the highest abundance of nosZ gene, while Cinachyrella sp. had the greatest abundance of nirK gene. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the nirK and nosZ genes were probably of Alpha-, Beta-, and Gammaproteobacteria origin. The results from this study suggest that the denitrification potential of bacteria varies among sponges because of the different phylogenetic diversity and relative abundance of nosZ and nirK genes in sponges. Totally, both the qualitative and quantitative analyses of nirK and nosZ genes indicated the different potential of sponge bacterial symbionts in the release of nitrogen gas.

Investigation on the Jet Stiffness Characteristics of a Novel Plasma Igniter

Sibo Wang, Jinlu Yu, Jingfeng Ye, Guohua Li, Danqing Huang, Benxin Yang, Qiangqiang Wei, Liming He

Summary: Plasma ignition technology is at the forefront of energy and power research. A novel plasma jet igniter called pre-combustion plasma jet igniter is designed in this paper, showing great potential in ignition energy and energy consumption reduction. Experimental results demonstrate that pre-combustion plasma jet stiffness is significantly higher than that of air plasma jet, and adjusting gas flow rate and input current can significantly increase jet stiffness.

Summary: Comparing percutaneous endoscopic and open posterior lumbar interbody fusion, this study revealed that PE-PLIF is a safe and effective alternative with less blood loss and shorter hospital stay. VAS and ODI scores significantly improved in both groups, with lower VAS score for low-back pain in the PE-PLIF group.

Predictive Value of Diaphragmatic Ultrasonography for the Weaning Outcome in Mechanically Ventilated Children Aged 1-3 Years

Yelin Yao, Liming He, Weiming Chen, Hao Zhou, Guoping Lu, Jinhao Tao, SuJuan Wang

Summary: Diaphragmatic ultrasonography is a feasible method in guiding ventilator weaning, and the indicators of DE, DTF, and Dtei(MAX) provide more accurate guidance for the weaning process. Among them, DTF may act as a more reliable predictor by avoiding the influence of diaphragm development in children.

Zero-DD: Zero-sample defect detection for industrial products

Haigang Zhang, Ronghui Pan, Fengjun Chang, Liming He, Zhongming Dong, Jinfeng Yang

Summary: In current industrial production, defective products have become a bottleneck for enterprises to improve product quality. Artificial detection is inferior to machine vision based detection in terms of speed, accuracy, and stability. However, data-driven based supervised recognition algorithms often fail in the presence of unknown defects. This paper proposes a detection model, called Zero-DD, for surface defects of industrial products with zero samples, which achieves high-precision detection by being sensitive to unknown defects.

A Novel Ionospheric Disturbance Index to Evaluate the Global Effect on BeiDou Navigation Satellite System Signal Caused by the Moderate Geomagnetic Storm on May 12, 2021

Liming He, Cong Guo, Quanyou Yue, Shixuan Zhang, Zenghui Qin, Junfei Zhang

Summary: In this paper, a new method is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the quality of carrier phase observation signals of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) during weak and moderate geomagnetic storms. The newly defined PAS (Percentage of Affected Satellites) index shows significant anomaly changes during moderate geomagnetic storms and has good correlations with the geomagnetic storm Kp index and Dst index. The proposed PAS index has a good indication for both BDS2 and BDS3 satellites and can be validated by calculating the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) positioning error.

Biomechanical evaluation of Percutaneous endoscopic posterior lumbar interbody fusion and minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion: a biomechanical analysis

Jia-Rui Li, Yang Yan, Xiao-Gang Wu, Li-Ming He, Hao-Yu Feng

Summary: Two finite element models were established to analyze and evaluate the stability of lumbar spine and the risk of cage subsidence after different minimally invasive fusion operations. The results showed that PE-PLIF had better segmental stability, lower pedicle screw rod system stress, and lower risk of cage subsidence compared to MIS-TLIF. The findings suggest selecting a cage with appropriate height to ensure segmental stability and avoid the risk of subsidence caused by a cage with large height.

Summary: Central nervous injury and regeneration repair are challenging in neuroscience. The study explores the effect of miR-155-5p on astrocyte activation and glial scar formation. The results demonstrate that miR-155-5p promotes astrocyte proliferation and inhibits cell apoptosis, resulting in increased scar formation. These findings have significant implications for the development of miRNA-based therapeutics for central nervous injury.

Summary: Canopy biophysical variables such as fCOVER, fAPAR, and LAI are widely used for ecosystem modelling and monitoring. The Sentinel-2 mission aims to map these variables globally using imagery from the MultiSpectral Instrument. However, the Simplified Level 2 Prototype Processor (SL2P) underestimates LAI over forests. This study validates the Sentinel-2 products and provides empirical bias correction functions for each variable.

Sensitivity Evaluation of Time Series InSAR Monitoring Results for Landslide Detection

Liming He, Panke Pei, Xiangning Zhang, Ji Qi, Jiuyang Cai, Wang Cao, Ruibo Ding, Yachun Mao

Summary: Spaceborne interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques are important for landslide detection and monitoring, but they have limitations in detecting high and steep slope landslides. This study proposes sensitivity indices and conducts experimental and statistical analysis to evaluate the feasibility of time-series InSAR monitoring for steep slopes. The results show that the defined indices can quantitatively evaluate the feasibility of InSAR observations with GNSS data and qualitatively evaluate the feasibility of InSAR monitoring without GNSS data. The study demonstrates the generalizability and wide applicability of these indices for landslide monitoring.
