Background: Intratumoral hemorrhage is a frequent occurrence in renal cell carcinoma and is an indicator of tumor subtype. We hypothesize that susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) is sensitive to hemorrhage in renal cell carcinoma and can give a more diagnostic image when compared to conventional imaging techniques. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of 32 patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma was evaluated. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 22 out of 32 patients also underwent a computed tomography (CT) scan. Hemorrhage was classified into 3 different categories according to shape and distribution. Histopathology was obtained from all masses by radical nephrectomy. The ability to detect the presence of hemorrhage using CT, non-contrast conventional MRI and SWI was evaluated, and the patterns of hemorrhage were compared. Results: Using pathologic results as the gold standard, the sensitivities of non-contrast conventional MRI, SWI and CT in detecting hemorrhage in clear cell renal cell carcinoma were 65.6%, 100% and 22.7%, respectively. Accuracy of non-contrast conventional MRI and SWI in evaluating hemorrhagic patterns were 31.3% and 100%, respectively. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that SWI can better reveal hemorrhage and characterize the pattern more accurately than either non-contrast conventional MRI or CT. This suggests that SWI is the technique of choice for detecting hemorrhagic lesions in patients with renal cancer.

Preoperative assessment of microvascular invasion of hepatocellular carcinoma using non-Gaussian diffusion-weighted imaging with a fractional order calculus model: A pilot study

Jiejun Chen, Yixian Guo, Yinglong Guo, Mengmeng Jiang, Yunfei Zhang, Yongming Dai, Xiuzhong Yao

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical potential of a set of new diffusion parameters derived from fractional order calculus (FROC) diffusion model in predicting microvascular invasion (MVI) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results showed that these parameters can serve as noninvasive quantitative imaging markers for preoperatively predicting the MVI status of HCCs.

Radiomics on Gadoxetate Disodium-enhanced MRI: Non-invasively Identifying Glypican 3-Positive Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Postoperative Recurrence

Huanhuan Chong, Yuda Gong, Yunfei Zhang, Yongming Dai, Ruofan Sheng, Mengsu Zeng

Summary: This study investigates the use of preoperative EOB-MRI-based radiomics to predict GPC3-positive expression and recurrence-free survival in patients with HCC < 5 cm. A comprehensive nomogram incorporating GPC3-oriented radiomics models is developed and found to outperform clinicoradiologic algorithms. The radiomics score is also found to be correlated with the histological GPC3-positive phenotype and survival outcomes.

T2-weighted MRI and reduced-FOV diffusion-weighted imaging of the human pancreas at 5 T: A comparison study with 3 T

Liyun Zheng, Chun Yang, Liang Liang, Shengxiang Rao, Yongming Dai, Mengsu Zeng

Summary: This study aimed to explore the feasibility of pancreatic imaging at 5 T and evaluate the practical improvement of T2-weighted MRI and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) at 5 T as compared with 3 T. The results showed that imaging at 5 T provided higher image quality ratings and SNR compared to 3 T for both T2-weighted and DWI images. However, there were no significant differences in the mean ADC values and CV of ADC between 3 T and 5 T measurements.

Summary: This study evaluated the image quality and cerebrovascular visualization of 5-T 3D TOF MRA for visualizing intracranial small branch arteries. The results showed that 5-T MRA had significantly better visualization of distal arteries and small vessels compared to 3 T MRA. There was no significant difference in image quality and quantitative measurements between 5 T and 7 T.

Summary: The feasibility of using three diffusion parameters derived from fractional-order calculus diffusion model in differentiating benign and malignant breast lesions was assessed in this study. Results showed significant differences between ADC and FROC parameters in benign and malignant lesions. A comprehensive prediction model was created and ROC curve analysis revealed improved performance in differentiating benign and malignant lesions compared to individual parameters.
