Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of primary Staphylococcus aureus (SA) lung infection on secondary Cryptococcus gattii (CG) infection. The results showed that the primary SA infection can reduce the lethality, improve behavior, and impair fungal proliferation in the host during subsequent CG infection. This protective effect is associated with the proinflammatory antifungal host response elicited by the bacteria in the early stage of cryptococcosis.

Summary: Nitazoxanide exhibits potent activity against clinical drug-resistant S. aureus and Enterococcus spp., concentration-dependent killing, ability to eradicate S. aureus biofilm, and lack of generation of resistance in S. aureus. Nitazoxanide synergizes strongly with linezolid against linezolid-susceptible and -resistant S. aureus, showing superior activity compared to untreated control and drug-alone treatment groups, both in vitro and in vivo.

Summary: Influenza virus and bacterial co-infection contribute to severe inflammation and acute lung injury through excessive neutrophil recruitment and formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Treatment with DNase I or a selective neutrophil elastase inhibitor (NEi) can alleviate the severity of lung injury.

Summary: The study identified specific cytokine and functional antibody signatures in patients with different primary invasive diseases caused by Staphylococcus aureus. These data provide insights into human responses to invasive staphylococcal infections and are important for guiding the identification of novel preventive and therapeutic interventions against S. aureus. Our findings showed distinct differences in inflammatory responses and antibody levels between patients with invasive S. aureus disease and healthy donors.

Summary: Linezolid, an antibiotic used to treat serious Staphylococcus aureus infections, can lead to the emergence of resistance in CF patients. In addition to a common mutation in the 23S ribosomal RNA, S. aureus strains can develop novel resistance through a combination of mutations affecting the bacterial ribosome. Linezolid resistance in CF patients is transient, possibly due to the growth disadvantage of resistant strains. However, chronic exposure to Linezolid may create optimal conditions for the future emergence of resistance.

Summary: The emergence and spread of cfr-mediated resistance to linezolid in staphylococci is a serious global concern. This study identified a single nucleotide mutation (Q148K) in cfr as the reason for linezolid susceptibility in cfr-positive Staphylococcus aureus and non-aureus staphylococci.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus nasal colonization is a risk factor for infection, and the genetic factors promoting long-term nasal colonization are not fully understood. In this study, a murine model of nasopharyngeal colonization was used to identify genetic loci under selection. Mutations in key metabolism genes and stress response genes were identified after successive rounds of colonization. The versatility of this model allows for further studies on colonization, persistence, and evolution.

Summary: Establishing reliable biomarkers for early detection of udder bacterial infection and immune response is urgently needed in mastitis management. This study investigated the causative agents and antimicrobial sensitivity of mastitis in dairy farms and found Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus responsible for clinical and subclinical mastitis, respectively. The study also identified significant changes in hematological, biochemical, oxidative biomarkers, acute phase proteins, and inflammatory cytokines in mastitis cases, suggesting their potential as early indicators. Antimicrobial resistance emergence was identified as a major public health concern.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the mechanisms of linezolid resistance in clinical Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci isolates from Spanish hospitals. Various molecular techniques were used to identify mutations and acquired resistance genes, as well as to determine the antimicrobial resistance and virulence profile of the isolates. The presence of the cfr gene and mutations in ribosomal proteins L3 and L4 were among the key findings in the study.

Summary: The interaction between Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients is key to understanding the severity of respiratory infections. The survival of S. aureus is significantly higher when coinfected with P. aeruginosa, suggesting that interactions between these two bacteria promote coexistence in the CF lung environment.

These findings are significant for understanding infectious diseases like cystic fibrosis in polymicrobial communities.

Summary: This study found that influenza infection dynamically induces methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) to increase cytotoxin expression while decreasing metabolic pathways. The activity of a specific cytotoxin is shaped by the post-influenza lung microenvironment, as it is activated by epithelial glycocalyx fragments released after influenza infection. The severity of post-influenza MRSA pneumonia is influenced by bidirectional host-pathogen interactions.

Summary: Fosfomycin exhibited excellent activity against MRSA, including isolates with reduced susceptibility or resistance to other anti-MRSA drugs. Synergy was observed when fosfomycin was combined with linezolid or daptomycin. These combinations may have potential clinical utility in treating serious infections caused by MRSA.
