Summary: Forage fish populations undergo large fluctuations, but most predators are buffered due to slower life pace. Seabird predation becomes significant when prey abundance is low. Threshold of 18% prey biomass should be considered for forage fish management. Predation pressure is not correlated with prey dynamics in the five ecosystems studied.

Summary: In Arctic marine predator colonies, individual movements and colonial segregation are influenced by seascape characteristics, with tidewater glacier fronts being important features. This study found that black-legged kittiwakes are more likely to forage near glacier fronts located closer to their colonies, creating fine-scale spatial segregation among adjacent colonies. Results suggest that spatially predictable foraging patches like glacier fronts can strongly impact predator movements and intercolonial spatial segregation.

Summary: Fear of predation can have significant ecological effects in the ocean's pelagic zone, leading to vertical migration in various animals to avoid visual predators. The study observed avoidance reactions in pelagic animals towards their predators at different spatiotemporal scales, rearranging life throughout the water column in response to predator presence.

Summary: Heterotrophic bacterial diazotrophs (HBDs) in the pelagic ocean can use chemotaxis to locate low-oxygen microenvironments suitable for nitrogen fixation, and their activity can influence marine nitrogen and carbon biogeochemistry.

Summary: This study developed straightforward protocols to establish long-term multigenerational cultures of ctenophores in the laboratory, providing a foundation for various biological experiments. The protocols include continuous culture of the Atlantic lobate ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi and targeted genome editing using CRISPR-Cas9 microinjection. These protocols offer opportunities for studying the genetics, cell biology, embryology, physiology, development, ecology, and evolution of ctenophores.

Summary: We used solar-powered GPS-GSM loggers to track the Black-tailed Gull year-round and found that they have a long post-breeding period near the breeding islet and a short pre-breeding period. Migration routes and wintering sites vary among individuals and years, and the gulls' movement is influenced by their feeding behavior.

Summary: Investigations on the trophic requirements of different life cycle stages of Paracentrotus lividus showed that higher animal supplements are needed during the juvenile stage, while lower animal supplements are required during the subadult and adult stages. The study revealed that the growth and energy allocation of P. lividus varied with the size after metamorphosis, leading to changes in macronutrient requirements.

Summary: Seabirds are important bio-indicators of marine ecosystems and their observation can assess environmental disturbance. A study in Cyprus from 2020-2022 used the ESAS methodology to record the presence, abundance, and behavior of seabirds. The study also reported the first incident of a pelagic seabird getting entangled in COVID-19 personal protective equipment (PPE) in the Mediterranean Basin, highlighting the emerging threat to seabird conservation.

Summary: This study assessed the performance of circle hooks in the Grenadian pelagic longline fishery. The results showed that circle hooks caught fewer sailfish compared to J hooks, but did not have negative effects on yellowfin tuna catch rate or grade. Therefore, using circle hooks can reduce impacts on sailfish stocks while maintaining target catches of yellowfin tuna.
