Summary: The industrial processing of meat and dairy production consumes a significant amount of fresh water, leading to the generation of large volumes of wastewater. As freshwater resources become scarce, there is increasing interest in reusing wastewater from slaughterhouses and dairy production, as well as recovering by-products. Electrochemical treatments are gaining attention for their application in treating these industrial wastewaters, with potential for value-added products and energy recovery.

Summary: Nejayote, a byproduct of traditional corn tortilla flour production, was treated using coagulation/flocculation and electrocoagulation processes. The exclusive application of electrocoagulation was found to be the most effective method in removing color, turbidity, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The combination of coagulation/flocculation-electrocoagulation also showed promising results in removing these pollutants from nejayote wastewater.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using biological and electrocoagulation treatment systems in poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment. The response surface methodology was used to determine the optimal operating conditions for electrocoagulation and its integration with a biological pretreatment. The results showed that electrocoagulation outperformed the biological method alone, but there was no significant difference when both methods were combined. Additionally, the novel pretreatment method, Ecoflush(TM), proved to be highly efficient in removing fats, oils, and grease from the wastewater.

Summary: In this research, the electrocoagulation-intensified peroxidation using an aluminum electrode was studied as a post-treatment method for poultry slaughterhouse wastewater. The optimal conditions for treatment performance were determined using response surface methodology, and the final treated effluent met the discharge standards. The cost of treating one cubic meter of wastewater was calculated as 3.02 MYR ($0.68) under the optimum conditions.

Summary: In this study, a combined electrooxidation and electrocoagulation (EO-EC) reactor was used to treat Cu-EDTA wastewater, with parameters like current density, electrolyte, and NaCl concentration found to affect the treatment efficiency. Under specific conditions, high Cu-EDTA removal efficiency was achieved, possibly through the generation of various oxidation and mineralization products. Overall, the EO-EC process proved to be an effective method for treating Cu-EDTA contaminated wastewater.

Summary: In this study, electrocoagulation (EC) process with aluminum and iron electrodes was used to treat industrial swine slaughterhouse effluents. Higher TOC removal efficiencies were observed using aluminum electrodes at the laboratory scale, while the EC process with Fe electrodes consumed less energy. The semicontinuous prepilot process achieved high TOC removal efficiency and met international standard limits for residual COD and TP concentrations. Adsorption on aluminum/iron hydroxides/oxyhydroxides was found to be the main mechanism for pollutant removal.

Summary: In this study, a sequential process of electrocoagulation (EC) followed by electrooxidation (EO) was used to remove the chemical oxygen demand (COD) from wastewater generated in an Iraqi vegetable oil refinery. The effects of operating variables on COD removal in EC were investigated, and a mathematical correlation was developed. The optimum removal efficiency of COD by EC was 69.19% and by EO was 96%. When EC and EO were combined, the total COD removal efficiency was 98.72%.

Summary: This study investigates the removal of fluoride from tungsten smelting wastewater using electrocoagulation (EC) technology. Laboratory tests were conducted to find the optimal conditions, and a pilot test showed that the combined process of chemical coagulation pretreatment and EC advanced treatment could stably reduce the fluoride concentration from 66-128 mg/L to less than 10 mg/L with a total operating cost of 0.99-1.51 USD/m3.

Summary: This study investigated the treatment of chemical industry wastewater by coagulation combined with Fenton or photo-Fenton oxidation processes. The coagulation with PAC achieved higher wastewater treatment compared to PACS and FeCl3 coagulants, while coagulation and Fenton oxidation showed efficient wastewater treatment with high COD, TOC, turbidity, and TSS removal. The application of photo-Fenton oxidation did not bring significant changes to the treatment.

Summary: The present study evaluated the efficiency of turbidity and COD reduction from wood industry wastewater using a combined coagulation-flocculation-decantation (CFD) - Fenton process. Polyaluminum chloride was found to be an effective coagulant, leading to high removal rates of COD and turbidity in the CFD process. Optimization of the Fenton process using response surface methodology resulted in further improvements, achieving high removal rates under optimal conditions. The combination of CFD and Fenton process showed promising results for the treatment of wood industry wastewater.
