Summary: CM-MC remains a significant health burden globally, with lower incidence but higher mortality and DALYs. The United States had the highest mortality and DALYs, while China had the highest number of incident cases. Systolic blood pressure and alcohol consumption were identified as the top two risk factors for CM-MC deaths worldwide.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the burden of atrial fibrillation (AF) in older adults aged 60-89 globally, regionally, and nationally. The results showed that in 2019, there were a total of 33.31 million AF cases, 219.4 thousand deaths, and 65.8 million DALYs globally. The burden of AF varied significantly across different territories and countries, with China having the highest number of cases, deaths, and DALYs. AF in older adults remains a major public health concern worldwide.

Summary: Scabies is a common skin disorder globally, but quantifying its impact has been challenging due to a lack of clear case definitions and laboratory tests. There are few epidemiological studies on the prevalence within countries or the effects beyond skin health. However, integrating surveillance for skin Neglected Tropical Diseases may help address these gaps and improve overall health and disease control.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the rates of incidence, death, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of ischemic stroke in young adults aged 15-49 years and analyze the relevant risk factors. The results showed a decrease in the global rates of ischemic stroke in young adults. However, regions such as North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia experienced the largest increases in incidence, death, and DALYs rates. High environmental temperature, high body mass index (BMI), and high fasting plasma glucose were identified as major contributors to the increasing DALYs rates. Targeted implementation of cost-effective policies and interventions is urgently needed to reduce the burden of ischemic stroke in young adults.

Summary: This study examined the worldwide burden of digestive diseases from 1990 to 2019. The incidence and prevalence of digestive diseases remained relatively stable during this period, with enteric infections being the primary cause. There was a significant disparity in the burden of digestive diseases among countries with different development levels.

Summary: The disease burden attributable to metabolic risk factors is rapidly increasing in China, especially in older people. This study estimated the pattern and trend of six metabolic risk factors in China from 1990 to 2019, and compared the disease burden among G20 countries. The results showed that population aging continuously accelerates the metabolic risk factor driven disease burden in China.

Summary: More than 90% of the adult population globally is chronically infected by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is associated with various malignancies. This review focuses on six cancers with a relatively large EBV-related case burden and estimates the new cases and deaths in 2020. The findings highlight the significant global impact of EBV-related cancers and suggest potential for EBV-specific therapeutic interventions.

Summary: Understanding the effects of demographic drivers on lung cancer mortality trends is crucial. This study found that the number of deaths from lung cancer increased by 91.8% between 1990 and 2019, mainly due to population aging, population growth, and non-GBD risks. The impact of demographic drivers on lung cancer mortality varied by region and gender.

Summary: Cancer is the leading cause of death among children. The global burden of childhood cancer has significantly decreased over the past 30 years, but remains higher in countries with lower social development index (SDI). Leukemia is the most common type of childhood cancer and the leading cause of death. International collaboration should be strengthened to improve healthcare for children with cancer in low SDI countries.

Summary: The study found significant disparities in COVID-19 mortality based on race/ethnicity, income, education level, and veteran status. Those who are racial/ethnic minorities, poor, have less education, and are veterans are disproportionately affected by COVID-19 mortality. Healthcare systems need to ensure adequate access to these groups and public health measures should target them specifically, with systematic collection of data on social determinants from COVID-19 patients.

Summary: Age-associated changes in DNA methylation have been suggested as a mechanism for frailty development, but previous studies have shown inconsistent findings regarding the association between epigenetic age acceleration (eAA) and frailty. This study found no significant correlation between different eAA measures and change in frailty, indicating the need for further research with longer follow-up periods and repeated eAA measurements.

Summary: Separate fields of research in public health and clinical medicine have been evolving independently for a long time. However, translational research in population health science now offers an opportunity for convergence between these two domains with great potential benefits. The COVID-19 pandemic has shed new light on the importance of this unified approach, as clinical and population-level strategies have come together to control the disease and population-level data and tools have been utilized in pandemic-related research. This presents a promising future for translational research.

Summary: This study examines the association between social determinants of health (SDoH) and the health of older adults in rapidly growing economies of Brazil, India, and China. Using frailty as a measure of health, the study finds that education is the most strongly and consistently associated SDoH with frailty, with higher education linked to lower frailty. The association between education and frailty weakens with increasing age.
