Summary: This study evaluates the demographic, operative, and short-term outcomes of tissue expansion (TE) in pediatric patients using the NSQIP-P database. The study found that complications occurred in 5.7% of patients, with unplanned readmission and unplanned operation rates of 4.5% and 6.5% respectively. Factors such as ASA score III-IV, congenital malformations, >1-day hospital stay, and pulmonary, neurologic, and hematologic comorbidities were associated with a higher risk of complications. The study highlights the importance of understanding risk factors for complications in pediatric patients undergoing TE to optimize surgical outcomes.

Summary: Survival rates for children and adolescents with malignancy have increased due to advances in oncology treatments, but these treatments can have toxic effects on the reproductive organs. Cryopreservation of oocytes and sperm is recognized as an effective strategy for preserving fertility in pubertal patients, while the use of hormonal agonists for ovarian protection is controversial. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is the only option for prepubertal girls, but the outcomes after transplantation are varied. Immature testicular tissue cryopreservation is experimental for prepubertal boys. Guidelines for fertility preservation exist, but implementation in clinical practice is limited. This review aims to discuss indications, outcomes, and workflow for fertility preservation.

Summary: This study found that there was no significant difference in infection/extrusion rates between pediatric patients who received only perioperative antibiotics (<= 24 hours) and those who were prescribed a course of postoperative antibiotics after tissue expander insertion surgery, suggesting that postoperative prophylactic antibiotics may be unnecessary in this population.

Summary: This systematic review examines the effects of surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) on facial soft tissues. The included studies suggest a post-surgical increase in alar width and alar base width. However, due to methodological limitations and high risk of bias, quantitative synthesis was not feasible.

Summary: Immediate breast reconstruction (IR) using tissue expander after mastectomy may be a viable treatment option, even when patients are expected to receive adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Chemotherapy or radiotherapy are not risk factors for postoperative complications.

Summary: Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation have been the main treatments for pediatric brain tumors, but recently new modalities have emerged. These new therapies aim to improve survival and reduce complications, but their side effects are not well understood yet. Treatment complications can be caused by drug toxicity or vascular, infectious, or autoimmune mechanisms. More research is needed to improve neurocognitive outcomes.

Summary: The global prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in pediatric patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is significant, especially after 5 years of diagnosis. Fundus photography is more sensitive than fundoscopy in detecting DR, making it the recommended method for early detection in pediatric patients. Annual screening starting from diagnosis is crucial for the timely detection and treatment of DR.

Summary: The study presents the experience of a reference adult endocrine surgery unit in treating pediatric thyroid diseases. Pediatric thyroid nodules have a worse prognosis and higher malignancy rates compared to adult thyroid disease. The malignancy rate is higher in indeterminate TIR 3B lesions. Postoperative hypoparathyroidism is common but transient, and intraoperative nerve monitoring is recommended in patients under 12.

Summary: Parameters such as 3-dimensional positioning and peri-implant soft tissue quality are crucial for the success of implant-supported restorations. Digital planning and guided surgery techniques improve implant placement accuracy, while modifying the periodontal phenotype is vital for aesthetics and peri-implant health, particularly in esthetic areas. This article presents a guided surgery technique for precise implant positioning and identifies the optimal anatomical area for obtaining a palatal gingival graft.

Summary: The aim of this study was to identify the factors associated with buccal peri-implant soft tissue dehiscences (BSTDs) and their frequency of occurrence. The results showed that thin tissue biotype and buccally placed implants were associated with BSTD, while connective tissue grafting (CTG) seemed to have a protective effect. Thin buccal plates and immediately placed implants did not demonstrate a higher risk of BSTD.

Summary: The study found that the majority of patients had a success rate of over 90% with vaginal deliveries after labiaplasty. For nulliparous patients considering the procedure, the data suggest that the risk of episiotomy or vaginal tear with vaginal birth after labiaplasty is comparable with or lower than the general population, further supporting the safety of this procedure. For patients with previous delivery, the data are more limited but suggest no increased risk in this small cohort.

Summary: In this study, tissue expansion was investigated using a porcine animal model to calibrate a computational model within a Bayesian framework. It was found that growth could be explained based on elastic deformation, with an area growth rate that is anisotropic. The study highlights the need for probabilistic computational models to predict tissue adaptation in realistic settings.
