Preclinical Application of Augmented Reality in Pediatric Craniofacial Surgery: An Accuracy Study

Summary: This study aims to assess the accuracy of augmented reality (AR) guidance using the commercial HoloLens 2 head-mounted display (HMD) in pediatric craniofacial surgery. Fronto-orbital remodeling (FOR) was selected as the procedure to test, and the accuracy of the osteotomies performed under AR guidance was measured. The results showed that the majority of participants were able to trace the trajectories of frontal and nasal osteotomies with an accuracy level of +/- 1.5 mm, indicating promising prospects for the use of AR in actual patient surgeries.

Augmented Reality in Surgery: A Scoping Review

Summary: This study analyzed the application of augmented reality (AR) in medicine and identified the most widely used technical solutions. The findings indicated that AR has been extensively used in orthopedics, maxillofacial surgery, and oncology. The Microsoft HoloLens Optical Viewer was the most commonly used display method, while the marker-based method with a rigid registration was the predominant system for tracking and registration in AR.

Despite its admitted advantages, AR's application in surgery is still in its early stages and requires further exploration.

Duplicated Reality for Co-located Augmented Reality Collaboration

Summary: The study proposes the concept of "Duplicated Reality" to allow users to remotely annotate the working area in AR while being co-located with others. Results from a user study show almost identical objective and subjective outcomes compared to in-situ augmentation, except for a decrease in the consulting user's awareness of co-located users when using the proposed method. The addition of duplicating the working area into a designated consulting area provides new interaction paradigms for future co-located AR collaboration systems.

Microscope integrated optical coherence tomography system combined with augmented reality

Cocaine Abuse as an Immunological Trigger in a Case Diagnosed with Eales Disease

Summary: This article reports an uncommon presentation of Eales disease associated with cocaine abuse, presenting as blurred vision in the left eye. Serologic panel was negative except for the heterozygous mutation of factor V Leiden. Clinical and biochemical parameters suggested a diagnosis of Eales disease. Treatment with dexamethasone and peripheral laser photocoagulation allowed symptom relief.
