Summary: The study evaluated the trends in surgical management of obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS) over a 10-year period in Italian referral centers. The data showed that surgical techniques varied depending on the clinical scenarios and sphincter function. The complexity of ODS treatment was highlighted by the changing trend in surgical management over time.

Summary: This study analyzed consecutive patients who underwent ventral mesh rectopexy for rectal prolapse or obstructed defecation and found that redundant colon and pre-existing constipation are risk factors for postoperative constipation persistence or new-onset, with postoperative pelvic floor rehabilitation potentially reducing this risk.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of a investigational point-of-care test (rectal expulsion device [RED]) to predict outcomes with community-based pelvic floor physical therapy. The results showed that RED can predict global clinical response, improvement in health-related quality of life, and complete spontaneous bowel movement response.

Summary: Through magnetic resonance defecography and statistical shape modeling, it was found that obstructed defecation is related to pelvic floor shape variations. Significant differences in pelvic floor shape were identified among women with and without OD and during different states and groups.

Summary: This study evaluates the efficacy of Ventral Prosthesis Rectopexy (VPR) for treating Obstructed Defecation Syndrome (ODS) and found a significant improvement in constipation symptoms within the 12-month postoperative period. Most patients experienced symptomatic relief and improved constipation-like symptoms and fecal incontinence for at least 1-2 years after surgery, with some studies indicating sustained improvement even after longer follow-up.

Summary: Symptomatic relief persisted for more than 6 years after resection rectopexy in patients with internal rectal intussusception (IRI), with no permanent patient sequela. However, quality of life was reduced in terms of bodily pain, social functioning, mental health, and general health perception in some cases.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of osteopathy and biofeedback in the treatment of dyssynergic defecation. The short-term results showed both treatments were effective, with some differences observed between the two. Long-term follow-up results indicated that osteopathy has promising long-lasting effects in treating dyssynergic defecation.

Summary: The present study evaluated the role of sacral neuromodulation for the treatment of constipation and other evacuation disorders after surgery. The results showed that sacral neuromodulation is a feasible, safe, and effective method with long-term benefits in the treatment of defecatory dysfunction after pelvic or colorectal surgery.

Summary: This study compared the changes in Rintala scores in children with FC and ODS managed by BT injection, BMP, and SBL, versus a control group managed by only BMP and SBL. The results showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups, indicating that BT injection did not provide additional improvement in defecatory function when assessed by Rintala score.

Summary: For patients with obstructed defecation syndrome, laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (LVR) appears to provide sustained improvements in functional outcomes and Health-Related Quality of Life for internal and/or rectocele prolapse, without exacerbating constipation. Additionally, the procedure has low morbidity and recurrence rates.

Summary: This study compared the perioperative results of laparoscopic and robotic ventral mesh rectopexies at the beginning of the surgical experience. The results showed that robotic procedures had a longer operative time but a lower conversion rate, and achieved similar or better postoperative outcomes compared to laparoscopic procedures.
