Magnesium Signaling in Plants

Leszek A. Kleczkowski, Abir U. Igamberdiev

Summary: Free magnesium (Mg2+) functions as a signal of adenylate (ATP+ADP+AMP) status in cells, controlled by the equilibrium of adenylate kinase (AK) and membrane-bound adenylate- and Mg2+-translocators. Changes in [Mg2+] impact enzyme activities, metabolism, and processes like photosynthesis, under normal and stress conditions. Magnesium signaling is likely widespread in all eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms due to the ubiquitous nature of AK and its role in adenylate equilibration.

Effects of Magnesium, Pyrophosphate and Phosphonates on Pyrophosphorolytic Reaction of UDP-Glucose Pyrophosphorylase

Leszek A. Kleczkowski, Daniel Decker

Summary: UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (UGPase) is an essential enzyme in glycosylation reactions, and this study reveals the significant role of free magnesium ions in its reverse reaction. The MgPPi complex serves as the true substrate for UGPase, while free pyrophosphate inhibits the reaction. Phosphonates, analogs of pyrophosphate and phosphate, showed different effects on UGPase activity.
