Heretofore, no study has determined how germination of ingested seeds is affected by the kind (class) of dormancy nor by seed dormancy x seed size interaction. Thus, we aimed to determine the effects of seed size, kind of dormancy and their interaction on germination of defecated seeds using a meta-analysis. We collected data for 366 plant species in 97 plant families from 76 publications. In general, gut passage significantly increased germination percentage of defecated seeds by 5% compared with that of control seeds. Germination percentages of non-dormant, physiologically dormant, and morphologically/morphophysiologically dormant seeds (all water-permeable) significantly decreased after gut passage by 40, 18, and 14%, respectively, compared with control seeds (non-gut-passed). Changes in germination percentage of seeds with physical dormancy (water-impermeable) were positive, and gut passage increased germination by 69% compared with control seeds. Germination of small seeds decreased 8% after gut passage, whereas germination of both medium and large seeds increased by 18%. However, changes in germination percentage differed between categories of seed size in each class of dormancy. In physically dormant seeds, germination of all seed sizes improved after gut passage, and the magnitude of increase was higher for large than for medium and small seeds. Thus, gut passage increased germination of medium-size water-permeable seeds (physiologically dormant and morphologically/morphophysiologically dormant) more than it did for large and small seeds. However, gut-passage decreased or did not change the germination percentage of non-dormant seeds. Seed size and kind of dormancy should be included in studies on the effect of gut passage on germination.

Quantifying seed germination response of deteriorated Trigonella foenum-graecum L. seed to temperatures and water potentials: Thermal time, hydrotime and hydrothermal time models

Hasan Teimori, Hamidreza Balouchi, Ali Moradi, Elias Soltani

Summary: This study used various temperatures and water potentials to investigate the germination response of fenugreek seeds, where the segmented model was found to be the most suitable to describe the germination behavior. Predictions for cardinal temperatures and time constants were also determined for both deteriorated and non-deteriorated seeds.

Summary: Astragalus is the largest genus of seed plants, with a high proportion of perennial rare endemics. The species mainly rely on Bombus, Osmia, and Anthophora for pollination, and different levels of self-compatibility affect seed and fruit production.

Potential for endozoochorous seed dispersal by sheep and goats: Risk of weed seed transport via animal faeces

Mostafa Oveisi, Ahmad Ojaghi, Hamid Rahimian Mashhadi, Heinz Muller-Scharer, Kamran Reza Yazdi, Behnaz Pourmorad Kaleibar, Elias Soltani

Summary: Endozoochory is an important mechanism for weed spread, and experiments showed differences in the fate of weed seeds passing through the gut of sheep and goats. Highest seed recovery and viability were seen in Cuscuta campestris. It is recommended to keep sheep enclosed for 96 hours to minimize seed transportation via feces, while excluding R. crispus and C. arvensis seeds from goat diet and keeping them in a stall for 96 hours can also reduce seed transportation.

Variation in seed dormancy and germination among populations of Silybum marianum (Asteraceae)

Zahra Monemizadeh, Farshid Ghaderi-Far, Hamid R. Sadeghipour, Asieh Siahmarguee, Elias Soltani, Benjamin Torabi, Carol C. Baskin

Summary: This study showed that milk thistle seeds are positively photoblastic and photodormant, with germination responses influenced by environmental conditions during seed development, resulting in differences among populations. Genetic variances and maternal effects should be considered in attempts to domesticate this medicinal plant.

Summary: Landraces have evolved through adaptation to their natural environment, with differences in heat and cold tolerance based on the mean annual temperatures of their growing regions. The study found significant relationships between long-term annual air temperature and cumulative temperature response indices, demonstrating adaptation to environmental conditions.

Maternal environment and genetic mechanisms that regulate primary dormancy and the rate of dormancy loss in barley seeds

Elias Soltani, Zahra Sadat Taheripourfard, Habibollah Ghazvini, Ali Izadi-Darbandi

Summary: Study on 20 promising barley genotypes revealed that environmental conditions play a crucial role in influencing the initial germination rate and dormancy loss rate in barley seeds. Hot and dry climate can decrease initial germination but increase dormancy loss rate, while high rainfall and humidity can promote dormancy loss rate.

Evaluation of dormancy breaking treatments on seed germination and soluble compounds of Kelussia odoratissma Mozaff. seedling

Khadijeh Ahmadi, Heshmat Omidi, Majid Amini Dehaghi, Elias Soltani

Summary: The presence of dormancy in seeds of Apiaceae plants makes the plant cultivation and domestication difficult. The study showed that seed treatment without mechanical scarification and priming had the highest germination rate, and a gibberellin concentration of 400 ppm also resulted in relatively high germination rate. Overall, no-stratification and gibberellic acid (400 ppm) was found to be the best treatment for breaking the seeds of Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff.

Application of a process-based model to quantifying dormancy loss in seeds of Parrotia persica CA Meyer

Elias Soltani, Keyvan Maleki, Siavash Heshmati

Summary: Limited information is available on the germination and dormancy of Parrotia persica seeds, and this study aimed to model dormancy and germination of the seeds and identify effective methods to overcome seed dormancy. Results showed that freshly matured seeds with GA treatment had higher germination rates at different temperatures, indicating a potential strategy for breaking dormancy in commercial or conservation settings.

Summary: Diminishing yield gaps is a crucial issue in developing nations. This study evaluated the yield gap of wheat fields using comparative performance analysis techniques and identified contributing factors and potential yield. The results showed a yield gap of 3748 kg/ha, which accounted for 40.23% of the potential yield. Factors such as leaf chlorophyll, irrigation, and soil salinity contributed to the yield gap. Therefore, developing nations can effectively utilize these techniques to increase crop production.
