Summary: The study reveals that ANXA4 and ANXA5 colocalize at the damage site of MCF7 cells during repair, with their (1:1) mixture inducing membrane rolling with an intermediate time constant. Unlike the crystal lattices formed by pure annexins, the (1:1) mixture generates a random arrangement of trimers, showing that curvature induction is the functional property of annexin mixtures in PMR rather than crystal formation.

Summary: The study found that ANXA5 protects against TBI-induced intestinal injury by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. ANXA5 improves body weight, reduces cell apoptosis and matrix metalloproteinase-9 levels, inhibits the degradation of tight-junction-associated protein, and improves intestinal inflammation by regulating inflammation-associated factors.

Summary: This study demonstrates a selective nanocarrier system that enhances cytotoxic T cell immunity against tumor-specific antigens, increases survival rates of immune-activating cells, and reduces tumor mass by decreasing immune-suppressive cells and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Combining the nanocarrier system with other ICIs further amplifies the anticancer immunity of interferon gamma+ (IFN-gamma) CD8+ T cells.

Summary: Sepsis is a dysregulated immune response to infection and a leading cause of mortality. Recombinant human Annexin A5 (Anx5) treatment has been shown to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokine production and improve survival in sepsis models. It blocks the inflammatory response induced by activated platelets and microvesicles in endothelial cells through phosphatidylserine binding.

Summary: In this study, we investigated whether inhibiting ferroptosis and neuroinflammation using A5 could ameliorate traumatic brain injury. The results showed that A5 improved neurological deficits, brain edema, blood-brain barrier disruption, and reduced neuronal apoptosis and ferroptosis. It also regulated the NF-kB/HMGB1 pathway and the Nrf2/HO-1 antioxidant system to decrease neuroinflammation and oxidative stress damage.

Summary: Selenium is an essential trace element for human health, and deficiency can lead to various diseases. Selenium is incorporated into selenoproteins, which play important roles in antioxidant defense, signaling, hormone production, DNA synthesis, and protein response. This review highlights the importance of selenium for a healthy pregnancy and the role of placental selenoproteins in early life development.

Summary: Lectin-glycan interactions, particularly those mediated by the galectin family, play crucial roles in regulating processes necessary for a successful pregnancy. Galectins specifically bind to intracellular and membrane bound carbohydrate ligands, influencing angiogenesis, immune-cell adaptations, and embryogenesis. They contribute to fetal development and placental health, with implications for pathological conditions like preeclampsia.

Summary: Variations in telomere length have been linked to aging, stress, and diseases. This study investigated the association between placental telomere length and preeclampsia. The results suggest that placental telomere length is not significantly different between severe preeclampsia cases and healthy controls, but it is negatively correlated with gestational age and influenced by race.

Summary: Patients on anticoagulant treatment often need to temporarily interrupt their medication for surgeries or invasive procedures. The Italian Federation of Centers for the diagnosis of thrombotic disorders and the Surveillance of the Antithrombotic therapies (FCSA) provides practical guidance and expert opinions on assessing risks, testing, using heparin, restarting medication after high-risk bleeding surgery, and nonpharmacological suggestions for perioperative management. FCSA also suggests forming a multidisciplinary anticoagulation team for optimal management.

Summary: This study evaluated the value of serial D-dimer testing and reduced-dose apixaban treatment in patients with unprovoked VTE. The results showed that using D-dimer testing as a basis for extending anticoagulation treatment is not accurate, and reduced-dose apixaban demonstrated high efficacy and safety in preventing recurrences.

Summary: The development of oral contraceptives (OCs) started in 1921 and faced challenges in understanding and managing the risk of venous thrombosis. Second-generation and later third-generation OCs were found to have increased thrombotic risk. In the 2000s, fourth-generation OCs with natural estrogens and a progestin were introduced. Research also provided insights into risk factors associated with OCs use.

Summary: Sex-specific factors play a role in the presentation of pulmonary embolism (PE) in young patients, but it is unclear if there are sex differences in older adults. Data from international and national registries show that PE is more common in elderly women. Women with PE in older age less frequently have certain comorbidities but more often have other risk factors compared to men. They also have different symptomatology, with women presenting less often with chest pain or hemoptysis but more often with dyspnea. Further investigation is needed to determine if these differences correlate with disparities in treatment and clinical outcomes.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of risk factors on pregnancy- or combined oral contraceptive (COC)-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE). Results showed that family history was a significant and independent risk factor for COC-VTE and pregnancy-associated VTE. Therefore, family history plays a crucial role in predicting the occurrence of VTE in the context of pregnancy or COC use.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the perioperative management and long-term prognosis of elderly patients undergoing urgent hip surgery while receiving antithrombotic treatment. The study found that anticoagulants may delay surgery, but a delay of more than 48 hours does not have a significant impact on prognosis. Patients receiving warfarin had a lower one-year survival rate, potentially due to their higher risk profile at the time of trauma.
