Pituitary carcinoma is characterized by the presence of systemic or central nervous system metastases rather than malignant histological features, making it an anomaly amongst carcinomas. In contrast, aggressive or atypical pituitary adenomas often have a relatively bland histological appearance despite their malignant growth patterns. We now report a case of a 67-years-old male with a giant pituitary tumor with overt pathologic and phenotypic features of malignancy, but the absence of metastases, that evolved from a benign non-functioning gonadotroph macroadenoma treated 10 years earlier. This case represents the first report of a pituitary adenoma with overt malignant histology that does not meet criteria for classification as pituitary carcinoma, helping to complete the pathological spectrum of disease observed with pituitary tumors.

The geometry of domain-general performance monitoring in the human medial frontal cortex

Summary: Monitoring one's own performance is crucial for flexibly achieving desired goals. In this study, single neurons in the human medial frontal cortex were recorded while subjects performed two tasks involving cognitive conflict. The findings suggest that neuronal representations of evaluative signals can be both abstract and task-specific, providing insights into the neuronal mechanism for estimating control demand.

Saccade-related neural communication in the human medial temporal lobe is modulated by the social relevance of stimuli

Tobias Staudigl, Juri Minxha, Adam N. Mamelak, Katalin M. Gothard, Ueli Rutishauser

Summary: The coordination between neural communication in the human amygdala and hippocampus during the free viewing of images is found to be related to the execution of eye movements, especially when fixating on human faces. This suggests that the state of the human medial temporal lobe network is selectively coordinated with motor behavior, with interareal neural communication being facilitated for social stimuli.
