Recurrent respiratory tract infections (RRTIs) present a very important problem in paediatric praxis. As true immunodeficiencies are rare, one of the most important factors assumed to contribute to increased respiratory morbidity is atopy. Several preparations of natural origin have been used for the prevention of RRTIs, and some of the most effective immunomodulators are biologically active polysaccharides - e.g. ss-glucans. In our randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, we investigated the prevalence of atopy in a group of children with RRTIs and the potential anti-allergic effect of pleuran (ss-glucan isolated from Pleurotus ostreatus) on basic laboratory markers of allergic inflammation. We confirmed that atopy may be an important factor contributing to the increased respiratory morbidity in children with RRTIs. The active treatment with pleuran resulted in a significant reduction of peripheral blood eosinophilia and stabilised the levels of total IgE in serum. This was more evident in atopic subjects. Pleuran showed a potential anti-allergic effect. This previously non-described effect could expand the application of this natural immunomodulator also as a complementary adjuvant therapy in allergic patients. Kidney transplantation as a treatment of choice for AA amyloidosis due to periodic fever syndrome

K. Granak, M. Jesenak, Matej Vnucak, P. Skalova, L. Laca, M. Mokan, I. Dedinska

Summary: Renal AA amyloidosis is the most serious complication of periodic fever syndrome, with most cases manifesting in early childhood. Occurrence in adults is rare and may have a poorer clinical course. Kidney transplantation is an effective treatment for end-stage chronic kidney disease based on AA amyloidosis, with early diagnosis and treatment crucial for protecting the graft from amyloid deposition.

Revisiting matrix metalloproteinase 12: its role in pathophysiology of asthma and related pulmonary diseases

Khalid Abd-Elaziz, Milos Jesenak, Martina Vasakova, Zuzana Diamant

Summary: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent proteases with various biological and pathological activities. Increased levels of MMP-12 have been associated with inflammation and structural changes in the lungs in conditions such as asthma, COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis. Targeting MMP-12 may provide further insights into disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies, but further research is needed to fully understand its role in these pulmonary diseases.

Glucose oxidase as an important yet overlooked factor determining the antibacterial activity of bee pollen and bee bread

Summary: Bee pollen and bee bread aqueous extracts have antibacterial activity, which is significantly enhanced in bee bread extracts in the presence of glucose. Immunoblot analysis revealed the presence of MRJP1 and glucose oxidase (GOX) in these extracts. Treatment of extracts with catalase restored bacterial growth, but only in samples where glucose supplementation caused an enhancement of antibacterial activity.

Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Effect of Honey in the Prevention of Dental Caries: A Recent Perspective

Juraj Deglovic, Nora Majtanova, Juraj Majtan

Summary: The successful application of honey in wound care management has led to its increasing usage in dental medicine for the prevention of dental caries. Laboratory studies have shown the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of honey, particularly against Streptococcus mutans. Despite promising results, further clinical studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of honey in preventing dental caries.

Dysfunctional mucociliary clearance in asthma and airway remodeling - New insights into an old topic

Milos Jesenak, Peter Durdik, Dasa Oppova, Sona Franova, Zuzana Diamant, Kornel Golebski, Peter Banovcin, Jarmila Vojtkova, Elena Novakova

Summary: Bronchial asthma is characterized by chronic airway inflammation, hyperresponsiveness, and structural changes. The impairment of airway remodeling and mucociliary clearance function are important factors contributing to the severity of asthma. Thus, new strategies targeting the restoration of remodeling changes and mucociliary clearance dysfunction could provide a new therapeutic approach for asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases.

Jarmila Vojtkova, Peter Banovcin, Anna Durdikova, Elena Novakova, Milos Jesenak

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the association between moderate COVID-19 infection and hyperglycaemia. The results showed that COVID-19 patients had significantly higher average blood glucose levels compared to patients with other viral infections, especially those with gastrointestinal symptoms or fever. Therefore, COVID-19 infection is associated with an increased risk of hyperglycaemia.
