Extensively drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (XDRAB) is a growing and serious nosocomial infection worldwide, such that developing new agents against it is critical. The antimicrobial activities of the rhizomes from Zingiber officinale, known as ginger, have not been proven in clinical bacterial isolates with extensive drug-resistance. This study aimed to investigate the effects of four known components of ginger, [6]-dehydro-gingerdione, [10]-gingerol, [6]-shogaol and [6]-gingerol, against clinical XDRAB. All these compounds showed antibacterial effects against XDRAB. Combined with tetracycline, they showed good resistance modifying effects to modulate tetracycline resistance. Using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method, these four ginger compounds demonstrated antioxidant properties, which were inhibited by MnO2, an oxidant without antibacterial effects. After the antioxidant property was blocked, their antimicrobial effects were abolished significantly. These results indicate that ginger compounds have antioxidant effects that partially contribute to their antimicrobial activity and are candidates for use in the treatment of infections with XDRAB. The properties and preparation of functional starch: a review

Lvting Fan, Qin Ye, Wenjing Lu, Di Chen, Cen Zhang, Lihan Xiao, Xianghe Meng, Yi-Chieh Lee, Hui-Min David Wang, Chaogeng Xiao

Summary: This article provides an overview of the structural characteristics, physiological functions, and applications of slow digestion starch (SDS) and resistant starch (RS) in the food industry. It also compares the preparation methods of functional starch from different plant sources. The lack of standardization in experimental methods has led to significant differences in research results, hindering the development of starch processing technology.

Therapeutic potential of nanoceria pretreatment in preventing the development of urological chronic pelvic pain syndrome: Immunomodulation via reactive oxygen species scavenging and SerpinB2 downregulation

Wei-Chih Lien, Xin-Ran Zhou, Ya-Jyun Liang, Congo Tak-Shing Ching, Chia-Yih Wang, Fu- Lu, Huei-Cih Chang, Feng-Huei Lin, Hui-Min David Wang

Summary: Nanoceria (cerium oxide nanoparticles [CNPs]) may prevent the development of urological chronic pelvic pain syndrome (UCPPS) by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and downregulating SerpinB2, thus modulating the immune response in UCPPS.

Summary: The research shows that using AuNPs at concentrations of 1.25 and 2.5 ppm can enhance cell proliferation, reduce reactive oxygen species generation, and attenuate platelet/monocyte activation. AuNPs can also promote cell adhesion, increase the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-2/9), decrease cell apoptosis and the release of inflammatory cytokines. Animal model experiments demonstrate that treating with 1.25 and 2.5 ppm AuNPs exhibits better biocompatibility and endothelialization. This suggests that AuNPs can be used as a biocompatible nanomedicine for regeneration research.

Summary: The study found that PVDC plastic wraps are the best choice for covering elevator buttons, with very low residual bacteria. Door-close and -open buttons were the most frequently touched sites, requiring more accurate and precise disinfection, therefore cleaning intervals of no longer than three hours may be warranted.

Summary: Osteosarcoma is a common bone malignancy with high metastatic characteristics and poor prognosis. Fluoxetine, an anti-depressant, has been shown to have antitumor potential. In this study, fluoxetine was found to induce cytotoxicity and apoptosis in osteosarcoma cells, while also suppressing metastasis and angiogenesis by targeting STAT3.

The effect of carboxymethyl cellulose and β-cyclodextrin as debittering agents on bitterness and physicochemical properties of bitter gourd extract

Cam Thi Hong Tran, Parushi Nargotra, Hoa Thi Cam Pham, Dong My Lieu, Phung Kim Huynh, Hui-Min David Wang, Cheng-Di Dong, Chia-Hung Kuo

Summary: This study investigated the effect of carboxymethyl cellulose and beta-cyclodextrin on the bitterness and properties of bitter gourd extract (BGE). The results showed that 0.75% beta-cyclodextrin significantly reduced the bitterness of BGE, and the formation of a complex between beta-cyclodextrin and BGE components was confirmed. The debittering agents did not inhibit the bioactivities of BGE.

Association between rapid renal function deterioration and cancer mortality in the elderly: A retrospective cohort study

I-Ching Kuo, Yi-Chi Chu, Yen-Hsu Chen, Ta-Chien Chan

Summary: This retrospective longitudinal cohort study aimed to explore the association between kidney function decline and cancer-related mortality in community-dwelling elderly individuals. The study found that rapid kidney function decline was significantly associated with increased risk of cancer mortality, particularly in gastrointestinal tract, hepatobiliary, lung, prostate, urinary tract, and hematological malignancies. Regular assessments of dynamic changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) might provide valuable information for cancer prognosis.
