Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between beta cell function and total body weight loss (TBWL%) 1 to 4 years after bariatric surgery in patients with morbid obesity. The results showed that baseline beta cell function was associated with long-term weight loss, especially after the first year post-surgery. This may be a helpful predictor of weight loss in clinical practice.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of marijuana use on complication rates and weight loss outcomes after bariatric surgery. The results showed that patients with a history of marijuana use generally had higher preoperative BMI, but marijuana use was not associated with complications or percent weight loss.

Summary: This narrative review summarizes the existing research on the clinical impact of a Mediterranean diet before and after bariatric surgery, focusing on its effects on weight loss and improvement in comorbidities. Although the current knowledge is limited, the findings suggest that adopting a Mediterranean diet before and after bariatric surgery is of significant value.

Summary: This systematic review examined the relationship between macronutrient intake and weight loss after bariatric surgery (BS). Eight articles involving 2,378 subjects were included, and the results indicated that protein intake was positively associated with weight loss after BS. Prioritizing protein followed by carbohydrates and reducing lipid intake favored weight loss and weight stability after BS. The review suggests that a high-protein diet (>60 g to 90 g/day) may be beneficial for weight loss and maintenance after BS, but a balance of other macronutrients is also important.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the modified jejunoileal bypass can effectively reduce blood glucose levels, improve islet beta-cell function and glucose metabolism in T2DM rats by modulating the gut microbiota composition. The findings suggest that amino acid metabolism may play a crucial role in improving islet beta-cell function in T2DM rats after the surgical intervention.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the basic taste identification, induced perception, and pleasantness in normal-weight controls and obese subjects before and after bariatric surgery. The findings revealed that the perception of basic tastes is similar in normal-weight and severely obese subjects. Sleeve-gastrectomy-induced weight loss significantly increases basic taste-induced intensity, and selectively reduces bitter-related pleasantness without affecting the ability to identify the tastes.

Summary: The study found that weight loss induced by bariatric surgery can reduce systemic inflammation, decrease B cell activity, lower levels of B cell activating factors, and improve inflammatory markers.

Summary: A study was conducted on patients who underwent bariatric surgery to investigate the factors affecting weight loss and the effectiveness of prophylactic ursodeoxycholic acid against gallstone formation. It was found that weight loss was influenced by initial body weight, sex, and dietary intake. Rapid weight loss was associated with a higher incidence of cholelithiasis.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the effects of a financial incentives program on follow-up and weight loss after bariatric surgery. The results showed that the program significantly increased follow-up rates for up to 6 months, but did not have a significant effect on weight loss.

Summary: This study examined the impact of cannabis use on weight loss outcomes in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. The results showed that pre-surgical cannabis use was not associated with weight loss, but post-surgical cannabis use was linked to poorer weight loss outcomes and increased risk of weight recurrence. Frequent cannabis use (i.e., weekly) was particularly problematic. Healthcare providers should screen patients for cannabis use and educate them about the potential effects of postoperative cannabis use on weight loss.

Summary: This prospective study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and changes of skin signs in morbidly obese patients after post-bariatric surgery (BaS). The study found that BaS provided improvements in various skin manifestations, but was also associated with the occurrence of telogen effluvium. Biophysical changes in skin properties were observed, including decreased sebum production on the face and decreased elasticity.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) mitochondria following diet-induced and bariatric surgery-induced weight-loss interventions in 4 independent weight-loss studies. The results showed that diet-induced weight loss led to downregulation of oxidative phosphorylation genes, while surgery-induced weight loss led to upregulation of these genes, providing insights into potential molecular targets for weight-loss success.

Summary: The pathophysiology of body weight control involves complex interactions between hormonal, environmental, behavioral and genetic factors. This study analyzed the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 13 genes encoding gastrointestinal peptides and long-term weight response in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Eight genetic variants were identified that were independently associated with weight response, and the highest scoring category in each risk score was significantly associated with lower weight loss and greater weight regain at the end of the follow-up.

Summary: Revisional bariatric surgery (RBS) is a challenging procedure and this study analyzed data from 252 patients who underwent RBS after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). The study found that RBS after LSG had a higher overall morbidity rate, while RBS after LAGB had more perioperative issues.
