The low-lying spectra of He-8 and He-10 nuclei were studied in the H-3(He-6, p)He-8 and H-3(He-8, p)He-10 transfer reactions. The 0(+) ground state (g.s.) of He-8 and excited states, 2(+) at 3.6-3.9 MeV and (1(+)) at 5.3-5.5 MeV. were populated with cross sections of 200, 100-250, and 90-125 mu b/sr, respectively. Some evidence for a He-8 state at about 7.5 MeV was obtained. We discuss a possible nature of the near-threshold anomaly above 2.14 MeV in He-8 and relate it to the population of a 1(-) continuum (soft dipole excitation) with a peak value at about 3 MeV. The lowest energy group of events in the He-10 spectrum was observed at similar to 3 MeV with a cross section of similar to 140 mu b/sr. We argue that this result is consistent with the previously reported observation of He-10 providing the new He-10 g.s. position at about 3 MeV. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Elastic scattering angular distributions of neutron halo nucleus 11Be studied via dynamic polarization potentials

Yan Li, D. Y. Pang

Summary: The study analyzed the effects of breakup reactions of Be-11 with a Pb-208 target on the elastic scattering angular distributions, revealing a suppression of the Coulomb-nuclear interference peaks. The weighted mean local polarization potentials obtained from continuum discretized coupled channel calculations were found to mimic the dynamic polarization potentials induced by the breakup coupling effects. Comparisons between the weighted mean local polarization potentials and the theoretically calculated Coulomb dipole polarization potentials suggested that the breakup coupling effect of the Be-11+Pb-208 system cannot be fully represented by the Coulomb dipole polarization potentials alone.

Summary: Two low-lying unbound states in C-16 were investigated using deuteron inelastic scattering in inverse kinematics. In addition to the previously measured 2(-) state at 5.45 MeV in a 1n knockout reaction, a new resonant state at 6.89 MeV was observed for the first time. The inelastic scattering angular distributions of these states were well reproduced by the distorted-wave Born approximation calculation with an l = 1 excitation. The spin-parities of the unbound states were tentatively assigned based on shell model calculations using the modified YSOX interaction.

Summary: We present a precise measurement of the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) for the O-16 ground state (GS), which has a strong effect on the C-12(alpha, gamma)O-16 reaction rate. Based on the new ANC, the astrophysical S-factor and stellar rate of the reaction are determined, leading to an increase in the total reaction rate within the temperature range of astrophysical relevance. The updated reaction rate also impacts the pair-instability mass gap for black holes.

Y. Z. Sun, S. T. Wang, Y. P. Xu, D. Y. Pang, J. G. Li, C. X. Yuan, L. F. Wan, Y. Qiao, Y. Q. Wang, X. Y. Chen

Summary: This study investigates the single-proton removal cross sections of various oxygen isotopes at intermediate energies and compares them with predictions from the Glauber reaction model. The results suggest that high beam energies enhance the applicability of the model and reveal the dependence of the spectroscopic strength reduction factor R-s on the binding depth Delta S of the removed nucleon.

Summary: In this study, the low-lying positive-parity states in Be-12 were investigated for the first time using a radioactive beam B-13 at 23 MeV/nucleon via the (2)H(B-13, He-3) reaction. The spectroscopic factors and excitation energies of these states were found to be in reasonable agreement with the predictions of the shell model. In addition to two bound states, a resonant state was observed at an energy of 4.8 +/- 0.1 MeV with an intrinsic width of 0.42 +/- 0.28 MeV. This resonance primarily decays via one neutron to the bound states in 11Be and is likely correlated to the previously observed state at 1.24 MeV in one-proton removal reaction. The spin-parity of 2(+) was tentatively assigned to this resonance based on the analysis of its angular distributions and theoretical calculations, including shell model and Gamow coupled-channel approach.

Summary: Quasielastic scattering and breakup angular distributions of the neutron halo nucleus Be-11 on a Pb-208 target at 210 MeV were studied, revealing a suppression of CNIP and corresponding theoretical agreement with CDCC method. The experimental angular distribution of Be-10 fragments matched well with CDCC calculations and a model by Ichimura, Austern, and Vincent. Systematic comparisons between experimental and theoretical data showed sensitivity of elastic scattering with heavy targets at high incident energies to the structure of neutron-rich nuclei.

Summary: Experimental results of H-1(B-13, d) B-12 transfer reaction to the low-lying states in B-12 are reported, with extracted optical potential parameters for entrance and exit channels. Spectroscopic factors associated with neutron transfer to known B-12 states were determined, showing s- and d-wave intruder strengths in B-13(g.s.) follow systematics for N = 8 neutron-rich isotones. Further theoretical interpretation is needed for the sudden change of intruder sd-wave intensity between B-13 and Be-12.

Summary: Elastic scattering and breakup angular distributions of the weakly bound radioactive nucleus B-8 on a Pb-208 target at an incident energy of 238 MeV have been measured, showing no significant Coulomb rainbow suppression. The comparison with Be-11 breakup cross section suggests that Coulomb and centrifugal barriers may suppress the breakup cross section of B-8. The measured angular distribution of the Be-7 fragments could be reproduced by considering elastic plus nonelastic breakup contributions.

Inhomogeneity of a rotating quark-gluon plasma from holography

Nelson R. F. Braga, Octavio C. Junqueira

Summary: This study investigates the influence of rotation on the transition temperature of strongly interacting matter produced in non-central heavy ion collisions. By using a holographic description of an AdS black hole, the authors extend the analysis to the more realistic case where the matter spreads over a region around the rotational axis. The results show the coexistence of confined and deconfined phases and are consistent with the concept of local temperature in rotating frames developed by Tolman and Ehrenfest.

Quantum tunneling from Schwarzschild black hole in non-commutative gauge theory of gravity

Abdellah Touati, Zaim Slimane

Summary: This letter presents the first study of Hawking radiation as a tunneling process within the framework of non-commutative gauge theory of gravity. The non-commutative Schwarzschild black hole is reconstructed using the Seiberg-Witten map and the star product. The emission spectrum of outgoing massless particles is computed using the quantum tunneling mechanism. The results reveal pure thermal radiation in the low-frequency scenario, but a deviation from pure thermal radiation in the high-frequency scenario due to energy conservation. It is also found that noncommutativity enhances the correlations between successively emitted particles.

Compact stars: To cross or go around? That is the question

Shahar Hod

Summary: The travel times of light signals between two antipodal points on a compact star's surface are calculated for two different trajectories. It is shown that, for highly dense stars, the longer trajectory along the surface may have a shorter travel time as measured by asymptotic observers. A critical value of the dimensionless density-area parameter is determined for constant density stars to distinguish cases where crossing through the star's center or following a semi-circular trajectory on the surface has a shorter travel time as measured by asymptotic observers.
