Summary: Imaging Mueller polarimetry (IMP) is a promising technique for real-time delineation of healthy and neoplastic tissue during neurosurgery. The transfer of machine learning algorithms used for image post-processing from fixed to fresh brain tissue depends on the degree of alterations of polarimetric properties induced by formalin fixation (FF).

Summary: Clinical archives of patient material are predominantly composed of FFPE blocks. However, sequencing DNA derived from FFPE material is known to have artifacts. In this study, a computational algorithm called FFPEsig is introduced to rectify these artifacts and enable accurate mutational signature analysis.

Summary: This study proposes a non-invasive polarization optical method to evaluate the microstructural changes in tissues during agent diffusion. The method is validated through experiments using skeletal muscle samples and Monte Carlo simulations. It provides a quantitative characterization of tissue changes and offers insights into the optical clearing stages in tissues.

Summary: The study found that alcoholic fixation is faster and more effective than formalin fixation, providing better results in tissue morphology and molecular characteristics. Tissues fixed with EMA showed better staining and immunohistochemistry results, as well as superior nucleic acid analysis, suggesting EMA as a safer alternative for tissue fixation and preservation.

Summary: Spatial proteomics plays an important role in the era of single-cell biology. In this study, a new routine workflow was developed for proteomic analysis of micro-FFPE tissues, allowing the construction of a spatial proteomic atlas of mouse brain, which exhibited typical characteristics of spatial-dependent protein abundance and functional enrichment.

Summary: There is growing interest in measuring metals concentrations in human placentas for various purposes, but the comparison between formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissues and frozen tissues has been limited. In this study, paired samples of frozen and FFPE tissue from 22 human placentae were analyzed for metal concentrations, and the results showed no significant differences between the two types of tissue preparations.

Summary: Hollow-core optical fibers convey light in air, showing remarkably low sensitivity of the propagation delay to temperature changes, especially in photonic bandgap type. The residual variation in propagation delay observed near the zero sensitivity wavelength has no apparent correlation to imposed temperature changes. Practical thermal stability of latency is limited by polarization mode dispersion, with strong polarization mode coupling observed in addition to birefringence.

Summary: This investigation explores the anisotropic nonlinear optical properties of GaN/AlN quantum dots with multitype-tunable shape under electric field. The findings suggest that continuously graded elliptic-like quantum dots exhibit higher polarization stability in nonlinear coefficients, and the enhancement and abort of various coefficients depend strongly on the asymmetry of the quantum dots, electric field strength, electric field direction, and polarization direction of the incident wave.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of formalin fixation time on the elemental composition of human tissue samples using EDXRF. The results showed a clear decrease of Cl and K in the tissues during formalin fixation, and an uptake of P, likely due to the buffered formalin solution. These findings suggest that there may be different thresholds for the use of these elements as diagnostic tools in unfixed and formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues.

Summary: This article investigates the effect of ferroelectric domains of thin-film Barium Titanate on the electro-optic response in a waveguide configuration, as well as the impact of drive electrode orientation with respect to the in-plane polarization angle in a multi-domain structure. Our theoretical findings substantiate the experimental observations in the literature and support the theoretical framework.

Summary: This study investigates the electro-optical properties and mechanisms of polymer dispersed liquid crystal films, revealing that the activation energy of the orientation polarization decreases with the increase of liquid crystal content, affecting the dispersion behavior of liquid crystal molecules. In addition, thermionic polarization under DC electric field increases the field strength and polarization relaxation time.

Summary: This work explores the coupling effects among birefringence, dichroism and off-diagonal depolarization parameters of differential Mueller matrix of random anisotropic media, proposing an anisotropic spatial correlation function to explain this phenomenon. The implications of these effects are highlighted, with potential applications in analyzing polarized light scattering by anisotropic random media.
