Summary: The influence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the formation of a corrosion product layer on alpha-Mg matrix and cathodic Al-Mn intermetallic was systematically investigated. It was found that SDS promoted the formation of a passive inner layer on alpha-Mg, leading to the steady-state growth of magnesium and aluminum oxide and inhibition of corrosion.

Summary: Iron-based redox-active minerals are widely distributed in natural systems and play a crucial role in carbon cycling and biogeochemistry. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of dissolution, especially the interplay between acidic and reductive processes, remain poorly understood. In this study, in situ liquid-phase-transmission electron microscopy (LP-TEM) and radiolysis simulations were used to investigate the dissolution of akaganeite nanorods. The findings demonstrate that pH buffers and chloride anions can selectively control the dissolution behaviors at rod tips and rod sides.

Summary: This study presents a quantitative four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) imaging technique (q4STEM) for local thickness estimation across amorphous specimens. The method measures spatially resolved diffraction patterns and evaluates the angular distribution of electron scattering or the ratio of integrated virtual dark and bright field STEM signals using Monte Carlo simulations. The method is independent of signal intensity calibrations and only requires knowledge of the detector geometry. The results demonstrate that the method yields robust thickness estimates for sub-micrometer amorphous specimens in different detectors and instruments.

Summary: The use of ion beam in TEM sample preparation is limited by the damage caused during transfer and mounting. To address this issue, a FIB shield has been designed to reduce the damage and contamination during transfer and mounting. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the shield.

Summary: Iron spots in early Qinghua porcelain, closely related to cobalt pigment and manufacturing technology, have not been fully investigated in terms of microstructure. By analyzing Qinghua samples from the Jingdezhen imperial kiln, ferrite solid solutions were identified, along with the main crystallites of iron spots being reported for the first time. The significant increase in iron or manganese in iron spots was found to be caused by changes in the source or formula of cobalt pigment. The variations in morphology and species of iron spots during the Hongwu and Xuande reigns suggest a transitional period in technology, providing new insights into the use of cobalt pigments and the technological development of Qinghua porcelain.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of acid-doped polyaniline/epoxy coating on AZ91D has been investigated. The doped polyaniline facilitates the formation of oxide films on the Mg substrate, resulting in a double-layer structure. These oxide layers contribute to the pronounced corrosion resistance of the coating/Mg system.

Summary: The study found that the addition of vanadium can cause grain refinement of cast commercial purity aluminium, mainly due to the high nucleation potency and sufficient growth restriction effect of Al10V particles. In addition, the relatively large size of Al10V particles helps to promote the nucleation of aluminium grains.

Summary: In the field of nanotoxicology, the combination of laser ablation and single particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-spICP-MS) with a liquid calibration of dissolved metal standards is used to detect and characterize the size of nanoparticles (NPs) in biological tissues. This method was able to preserve particle integrity during the ablation process and accurately analyze the particle size distribution of different types of NPs. The data obtained from studying Ag NPs and CeO2 NPs in biological sections demonstrate the potential of LA-spICP-MS for localizing and sizing NPs in the absence of particle standards.

Summary: This study investigates the radiation effects on the dissolution behavior of boehmite using liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy. The results show that the dissolution of boehmite varies with different electron dose rates, and electrostatic repulsion and knock-on damage from the electron beam can enhance the dissolution process.
