We show that simple scalar field models can give rise to curvature singularities in the effective Friedmann dynamics of loop quantum cosmology (LQC). We find singular solutions for spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with a canonical scalar field and a negative exponential potential, or with a phantom scalar field and a positive potential. While LQC avoids big bang or big rip type singularities, we find sudden singularities where the Hubble rate is bounded, but the Ricci curvature scalar diverges. We conclude that the effective equations of LQC are not in themselves sufficient to avoid the occurrence of curvature singularities.

Relativistic corrections to the growth of structure in modified gravity

Guilherme Brando, Kazuya Koyama, David Wands

Summary: This study presents a method to introduce relativistic corrections into Horndeski theory in numerical simulations, assuming gravitational coupling only between standard matter species and the scalar field. The impact of relativistic corrections on the matter power spectrum in k-essence models, including massless and massive neutrinos, is investigated, with results showing a maximum deviation of approximately 7% at k similar to 10(-3) Mpc(-1) at z = 0. The formalism developed in this study allows for testing beyond ΛCDM models using upcoming large-scale structure surveys.

Ultra-slow-roll inflation with quantum diffusion

Chris Pattison, Vincent Vennin, David Wands, Hooshyar Assadullahi

Summary: The study explores the impact of quantum diffusion on the dynamics of the inflaton during ultra-slow-roll inflation, presenting analytical and numerical techniques. By deriving the characteristic function, the full probability distribution function for the primordial density field is constructed. The numerical results from simulations and a new approach based on iterative Volterra integrals support the possibility of primordial black hole production during ultra-slow-roll inflation.

Fully relativistic predictions in Horndeski gravity from standard Newtonian N-body simulations

Guilherme Brando, Kazuya Koyama, David Wands, Miguel Zumalacarregui, Ignacy Sawicki, Emilio Bellini

Summary: The study combines N-body gauge with Horndeski gravity theories to investigate the relativistic effects of scalar fields on the matter power spectrum at intermediate and large scales. It shows that the kineticity function at these scales enhances the amplitude of contributions from the extra degree of freedom, and identifies the purely relativistic origin of gravity acoustic oscillations in the matter power spectrum at large scales. This research provides insights into how certain modified gravity models can enhance gravity acoustic oscillations to detectable levels, offering a new test of gravity at scales probed by future galaxy and intensity-mapping surveys.

Summary: The research project aims to analyze the economic development model of Angola, focusing on the adoption of alternative energies to diversify the economy and promote sustainability. The study highlights the benefits of a diversified economy compared to a non-diversified one, and identifies solar energy, biodiesel, hydraulic energy, and bioethanol as the best energy alternatives to reduce oil dependency.
