Summary: Scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments confirm that the predominant ordered structure for Ag309 nanoclusters is face-centered cubic (FCC). Density functional theory calculations reveal the influence of defects and symmetry changes on stability, with FCC and decahedral symmetries being more favorable than icosahedral. The proposal of a surface atomic density descriptor provides a qualitative reproduction of surface energy data, indicating that nonsymmetric and defective structures may be preferred within a certain size range.

This is the first report of anisotropic conductivity observed in a monomeric heterometallic complex single crystal.

Summary: This study investigates the structural properties, elastic anisotropies, and thermal properties of hexagonal TMSi2 silicides using first-principles (DFT). The results show that these silicides are not potentially super-hard materials and are in fact brittle. Summary: Two seven-coordinate Co(II)-nitrate complexes, [Co(tmpdc)(NO3)(2)] (1) and [Co(tmpdt)(NO3)(2)]center dot CH3CN (2), with tridentate neutral ligands tmpdc or tmpdt have been synthesized. Single X-ray diffraction reveals that the coordination geometries of the two complexes are significantly different when the two donor atoms of the tridentate ligand change from oxygen to sulfur. Complex 1 is a capped octahedral while complex 2 is a pentagonal bipyramid. Magnetic measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance indicate the anisotropic S = 3/2 spin ground state of the Co(II) ions with easy-plane anisotropy for both complexes. Frequency- and temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility studies show slow magnetic relaxation for both complexes under applied fields.

The controlled on-surface formation of ligand-stabilized heterometallic Ce/Au clusters containing two, three, and four Ce atoms bridged by Au adatoms demonstrates an efficient strategy for the preparation and organization of multi-Ln-containing clusters.

The system undergoes a transformation from IP-spin-configuration-dominated state to OOP-spin-configuration-dominated state below a certain temperature, and a two-step reversal behavior is observed in the OOP M(H) loop near compensation. The field-induced spin-flop transitions and dominance of OOP configuration over IP configuration in effective magnetic anisotropy are also discussed.
