The dynamics at the end of inflation can generate an asymmetry between particles and antiparticles of the inflaton field. This asymmetry can be transferred to baryons via decays, generating a baryon asymmetry in our Universe. We explore this idea in detail for a complex inflaton governed by an observationally consistent-flatter than quadratic-potential with a weakly broken global U(1) symmetry. We find that most of the inflaton asymmetry is locked in nontopological soliton-like configurations (oscillons) produced copiously at the end of inflation. These solitons eventually decay into baryons and generate the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry for a range of model parameters. Through a combination of three dimensional lattice simulations and a detailed linearized analysis, we show how the inflaton asymmetry depends on the fragmentation, the magnitude of the symmetry breaking term and initial conditions at the end of inflation. We discuss the final decay into baryons, but leave a detailed analysis of the inhomogeneous annihilation, reheating and thermalization to future work. As part of our work, we pay particular attention to generating multifield initial conditions for the field fluctuations (including metric perturbations) at the end of inflation for lattice simulations.

Electromagnetic bursts from mergers of oscillons in axion-like fields

Mustafa A. Amin, Zong-Gang Mou

Summary: The study focuses on investigating the bursts of electromagnetic and scalar radiation resulting from the collision and merger of oscillons made from axion-like particles. It is found that radiation becomes the dominant source of energy loss after the merger under resonance condition. The backreaction of scalar and electromagnetic radiation is also included in the simulations, providing insights into the time and energy scales involved in the process.

CMB birefringence from ultralight-axion string networks

Mudit Jain, Andrew J. Long, Mustafa A. Amin

Summary: Studying the birefringence of CMB photons passing through axion string loops can provide valuable information about axion-photon coupling and string network structure. The analysis reveals a characteristic angular scale set by theta(min) and a peak in the birefringence power spectrum around l(p) similar to 1/theta(min). An additional scale, controlled by the axion's mass, is introduced if the string network collapses before today.

Spillway preheating

JiJi Fan, Kaloian D. Lozanov, Qianshu Lu

Summary: The proposed spillway preheating mechanism can more efficiently dissipate the energy density of the inflaton, using fast perturbative decays of resonantly produced daughter particles to act as a spillway, reducing their backreaction on the inflaton. This leads to a more effective resonant production and a simple inverse power-law scaling in the fraction of energy density remaining in the inflaton.

Dipole radiation and beyond from axion stars in electromagnetic fields

Mustafa A. Amin, Andrew J. Long, Zong-Gang Mou, Paul M. Saffin

Summary: The study explores the production of photons from coherently oscillating axionic fields in the presence of external electromagnetic fields, showing different behaviors of photon luminosity in relation to coupling parameter and configuration radius. A non-monotonic behavior of luminosity with coupling strength is observed in moderate to large coupling regimes, with a potential suppression at moderately large coupling and transition to exponential growth at sufficiently large coupling. Lattice simulations and discussions on medium effects and implications in astrophysical and cosmological settings are also conducted.

Beyond Schrodinger-Poisson: nonrelativistic effective field theory for scalar dark matter

Borna Salehian, Hong-Yi Zhang, Mustafa A. Amin, David Kaiser, Mohammad Hossein Namjoo

Summary: This paper systematically derives the SP equations and relativistic corrections from the nonlinear and fully relativistic KGE equations in an expanding universe, providing insights into deviations and applicability beyond the SP system. The method presented simplifies the analysis of scalar dark matter dynamics and accurately captures deviations from the SP system towards the full KGE case, particularly in calculating the mass-radius relationship of solitons.

Summary: CMB-S4 is the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment, designed to improve the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the universe. This study presents a forecasting framework that uses a power-spectrum-based semianalytic projection tool to optimize constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio. The framework is unique in its use of information from current CMB experiments to predict the effectiveness of future CMB-polarization endeavors. The study also includes map-based validation studies, allowing for additional complexity and independent verification of the forecasts.

Lattice simulations of inflation

Angelo Caravano, Eiichiro Komatsu, Kaloian D. Lozanov, Jochen Weller

Summary: The paper focuses on studying the inflationary universe using a numerical lattice simulation, specifically looking at scalar field perturbations in simple single-field inflation models. The simulation successfully reproduces results of slow-roll inflation with harmonic potential, and also demonstrates the ability to reproduce oscillatory features in the power spectrum of a step potential model. This lays the foundation for future research using lattice simulations to study more complex inflation models.

Small-scale structure in vector dark matter

Mustafa A. Amin, Mudit Jain, Rohith Karur, Philip Mocz

Summary: By simulating the small-scale structure of vector dark matter (VDM) and scalar dark matter (SDM), we found that the amount of wave interference, core-to-halo mass ratio, spin of the core, and shape of the central regions of dark matter halos can distinguish VDM and SDM. VDM has less wave interference, lower core-to-halo mass ratio, smoother transition of the central soliton, and more diffuse granules in the halo compared to SDM. This research is significant for distinguishing dark matter types through astrophysical and terrestrial observations.

Searching for axion-like particles through CMB birefringence from string-wall networks

Mudit Jain, Ray Hagimoto, Andrew J. Long, Mustafa A. Amin

Summary: Axion-like particles (ALPs) can form a network of cosmic strings and domain walls, leading to anisotropic birefringence of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). However, measurements of CMB birefringence from several telescopes show no evidence for axion-defect-induced anisotropic birefringence.

Photons from dark photon solitons via parametric resonance

Mustafa A. Amin, Andrew J. Long, Enrico D. Schiappacasse

Summary: In this research, the interaction between dark photons and photons is considered, and the electromagnetic radiation generated from an isolated vector soliton due to resonant amplification of the ambient electromagnetic field is studied. The directional dependence and polarization of the outgoing radiation are characterized, which depend on the operator and the polarization state of the underlying vector soliton.

i-SPin: an integrator for multicomponent Schr?dinger-Poisson systems with self-interactions

Mudit Jain, Mustafa A. Amin

Summary: We have developed an algorithm and provided publicly available code to numerically evolve multicomponent Schrodinger-Poisson (SP) systems with a SO(n) symmetry, allowing for attractive or repulsive self-interactions in addition to gravity. The algorithm addresses complexities introduced by non-gravitational self-interactions, such as mass and spin conservation, through an analytical solution for the 'kick' step, which completely decouples the multicomponent system. The algorithm accurately preserves spin and mass, is reversible, and can be applied in cosmological and laboratory settings.

Cosmological structure formation and soliton phase transition in fuzzy dark matter with axion self-interactions

Summary: We investigate cosmological structure formation in fuzzy dark matter (FDM) with attractive self-interaction using numerical simulations. The attractive self-interaction arises if the FDM boson is an ultra-light axion with a strong CP symmetry-breaking scale. Despite its weakness, the attractive self-interaction can counteract quantum pressure and modify structure formation. Our simulations show that the self-interaction enhances small-scale structure formation and soliton cores undergo a phase transition from dilute to dense solitons above a critical mass.

Polarized solitons in higher-spin wave dark matter

Mudit Jain, Mustafa A. Amin

Summary: We first introduce the effective nonrelativistic theory of gravitationally interacting, massive integer-spin fields and derive the corresponding equations of motion. Then, we construct a set of gravitationally supported solitons by using polarized plane waves, which have extremal polarization and large spin but no orbital angular momentum. These solitons can be used to generate partially polarized solitons.
