We propose a new mechanism where both Dirac masses for the charged leptons and Majorana masses for neutrinos are generated via quantum levels. The charged-lepton masses are given by the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the Higgs doublet field and that of a triplet field. On the other hand, neutrino masses are generated by two VEVs of triplet Higgs fields. As a result, the hierarchy between the masses for charged leptons and neutrinos can be explained by the triplet VEVs which have to be much smaller than the doublet VEV due to the constraint from the electroweak rho parameter. We construct a concrete model to realize this mechanism with discrete Z(2) and Z(4) symmetries, in which masses for neutrinos and those for the muon and electron are generated at the one-loop level. As a bonus in our model, the deviation in the measured muon g - 2 from the standard model prediction can be explained by contributions of extra particle loops. Besides, the lightest Z(2)- odd neutral particle can be a dark matter candidate. The collider phenomenology is also discussed, especially focusing on doubly charged scalar bosons which are necessary to introduce to occur our mechanism.

Metabolic phenotypes and incident type 2 diabetes: population-based Panasonic cohort study 6

Ayaka Kobayashi, Hiroshi Okada, Masahide Hamaguchi, Kazushiro Kurogi, Hiroaki Murata, Masato Ito, Michiaki Fukui

Summary: This study found that the stable, metabolically healthy nonobesity group had a lower risk of incident type 2 diabetes compared to the stable, metabolically healthy obesity group. When metabolically healthy obese individuals changed to metabolically healthy nonobese status, their risk of developing type 2 diabetes was similar to that of participants in the stable metabolically healthy nonobesity group. These findings suggest the importance of paying attention to changes in metabolic phenotypes to prevent incident type 2 diabetes in the Japanese population.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between estimated small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) and incident type 2 diabetes. Data from a health checkup program conducted by Panasonic Corporation between 2008 and 2018 were analyzed. The study found that estimated sdLDL cholesterol was an important predictor of future incidence of diabetes within 10 years and had a higher area under the curve compared to other lipid profiles.

Effects of Royal Jelly on Gut Dysbiosis and NAFLD in db/db Mice

Genki Kobayashi, Takuro Okamura, Saori Majima, Takafumi Senmaru, Hiroshi Okada, Emi Ushigome, Naoko Nakanishi, Yuichiro Nishimoto, Takuji Yamada, Hideto Okamoto, Nobuaki Okumura, Ryoichi Sasano, Masahide Hamaguchi, Michiaki Fukui

Summary: This study focused on the therapeutic efficacy of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), unique to royal jelly (RJ), in treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Results showed that RJ improved NAFLD activity scores and decreased gene expression related to fatty acid metabolism, fibrosis, and inflammation in the liver. RJ also regulated innate immunity-related inflammatory responses in the small intestine and decreased the expression of genes associated with inflammation and nutrient absorption transporters. RJ increased the abundance of certain bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids and increased the concentrations of RJ-related MCFAs in the serum and liver. These MCFAs decreased saturated fatty acid deposition in liver cells and decreased the gene expression associated with fibrosis and fatty acid metabolism. RJ and RJ-related MCFAs improved dysbiosis and regulated the expression of inflammation-, fibrosis-, and nutrient absorption transporter-related genes, thereby preventing NAFLD.
