Cosmological constant from the ghost: A toy model

We suggest that the solution to the cosmological vacuum energy puzzle is linked to the infrared sector of the effective theory of gravity interacting with standard model fields. We propose a specific solvable two dimensional model where our proposal can be explicitly tested. We analyze the 2d Schwinger model on a 2-torus and in curved 2d space, mostly exploiting the properties of its topological susceptibility, its links with the nontrivial topology or deviations from spacetime flatness, and its relations to the real 4d world. The Kogut-Susskind ghost (which is a direct analogue of the Veneziano ghost in 4d) on a 2-torus and in curved 2d space plays a crucial role in the computation of the vacuum energy. The departure from Minkowski flatness, which is defined as the cosmological constant in our framework, is found to scale as 1/L, where L is the linear size of the torus. Therefore, in spite of the fact that the physical sector of 2d QED is represented by a single massive scalar particle, the deviation from Minkowski space is linear in L rather than exponentially suppressed as one could naively expect.

Detecting ultra-high-energy cosmic ray anisotropies through harmonic cross-correlations

Summary: A new observable for ultra-high-energy cosmic ray physics is proposed, using the cross-correlation power spectrum. This method allows for direct theoretical modeling of main astrophysical components and is more sensitive to UHECR anisotropies on smaller angular scales.

Searching for spin-2 ULDM with gravitational waves interferometers

Summary: The study shows that ultra-light dark matter of spin two, interacting with Standard Model fields through its universal coupling alpha, generates a signal similar but distinct from continuous gravitational waves, detectable by current and planned gravitational wave interferometers. Implementation of these searches for gravitational wave interferometers would deepen our understanding of both dark matter and gravity.

Testing super heavy dark matter from primordial black holes with gravitational waves

Summary: Research shows that ultra-light primordial black holes evaporating before big-bang nucleosynthesis can produce all matter fields, including dark matter. If dark matter gets its mass through symmetry-breaking, this phase transition also produces cosmic strings that radiate gravitational waves. Observing the characteristics of gravitational waves can provide evidence that super-heavy dark matter originated from primordial black holes.

Constraining ultra-high-energy cosmic ray composition through cross-correlations

Summary: The chemical composition of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays at the highest energy end is difficult to measure directly. However, by quantifying the magnetic deflections of these rays in the Galactic magnetic field, it is possible to indirectly determine their atomic numbers. In this paper, the authors demonstrate that the angular harmonic cross-correlation between ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and galaxies can effectively distinguish different atomic numbers. They provide an example where a 39% fraction of Fe56 nuclei can be excluded if the atomic number Z is equal to 1 for rays above 100 EeV.

PBH-infused seesaw origin of matter and unique gravitational waves

Summary: The Standard Model, extended with three right-handed neutrinos, is able to explain light neutrino masses, the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, and dark matter. In this study, the authors show that even if the right-handed neutrinos are super-heavy, the model can still be tested through its features on the stochastic Gravitational Wave background. By considering primordial black holes that produce super-heavy right-handed neutrino dark matter, the authors propose a way to test the model using Gravitational Wave interferometers.

Summary: The Telescope Array (TA) Cosmic Ray Observatory is the largest cosmic ray detector in the northern hemisphere, built to study ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) using a hybrid detection method. The measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum above 10^17.5 eV was conducted using the fluorescence telescopes and a weather classification scheme. The analysis of data from two telescope sites resulted in a combined spectrum that agrees well with previous measurements, revealing three breaks in the power law model and suggesting an additional feature in the energy range between the Ankle feature and the GZK suppression.
