We study the static potential between external quark-antiquark pairs in a strongly coupled gauge theory with a large number of colors and massive dynamical flavors, using a dual string description. When the constituent mass of the dynamical quarks is set below a certain critical value, we find a first-order phase transition between a linear and a Coulomb-like regime. Above the critical mass the two phases are smoothly connected. We also study the dependence on the theory parameters of the quark-antiquark separation at which the static configuration decays into specific static-dynamical mesons.

New AdS2 backgrounds and N=4 conformal quantum mechanics

Yolanda Lozano, Carlos Nunez, Anayeli Ramirez, Stefano Speziali

Summary: A new infinite family of Type IIB backgrounds with an AdS(2) factor is presented, each with a proposed dual Super Conformal Quantum Mechanics (SCQM) model. Holographic expressions for the number of vacua, Chern-Simons terms, and other non-perturbative aspects of the SCQM are provided. The central charge of the one-dimensional system is related to a combination of electric and magnetic fluxes in Type IIB, with an extremisation principle proposed using Ramond-Ramond fluxes. Other physical and geometrical aspects of these conformal quantum mechanics are analyzed.

AdS2 duals to ADHM quivers with Wilson lines

Yolanda Lozano, Carlos Nunez, Anayeli Ramirez, Stefano Speziali

Summary: In this paper, we discuss AdS(2) x S-3 x CY2 x I-rho solutions to massive Type IIA supergravity with 4 Poincare supersymmetries, and propose an explicit dual quiver quantum mechanics model built out of various branes to describe the interactions in 5d gauge theories. By using the RR Maxwell fluxes of the solutions, we construct a functional that allows derivation of the holographic central charge through a geometrical extremisation principle.

AdS2 x S2 x CY2 solutions in Type IIB with 8 supersymmetries

Yolanda Lozano, Carlos Nunez, Anayeli Ramirez

Summary: We present a new family of Type IIB supergravity solutions with eight supercharges, related to previously constructed solutions through double analytical continuations. Our solutions fit locally in the class of solutions constructed by Chiodaroli, Gutperle and Krym, and are compared to global solutions constructed by Chiodaroli, D'Hoker and Gutperle.

Relativistic velocity addition from the geometry of momentum space

Angel Paredes, Xabier Prado, Jorge Mira

Summary: This article presents the geometrization of the addition of velocities in special relativity using Minkowski diagrams in momentum space. It provides graphical solutions for collinear velocities and generalizes the concept to non-collinear velocities in higher dimensions. Interactive applets are also offered to enhance students' understanding of the subtleties of special relativity.

Electrostatic description of five-dimensional SCFTs

Andrea Legramandi, Carlos Nunez

Summary: In this paper, we discuss a class of AdS(6) backgrounds in Type IIB supergravity and their dualities with five-dimensional SCFTs. We provide the criteria for determining the solutions and interpret them in terms of color and flavor groups in the dual field theory. The paper also presents general expressions for calculating the holographic central charge and the Wilson loop VEV, as well as discusses some solutions outside the general class.

Electrostatic description of 3d N=4 linear quivers

Mohammad Akhond, Andrea Legramandi, Carlos Nunez

Summary: This study presents the holographic dual for the strongly coupled, low energy dynamics of balanced N = 4 field theories in (2 + 1) dimensions, and examines various aspects of the system through holographic calculations. It derives a generic expression for the Free Energy/Holographic Central Charge and calculates these quantities explicitly in various general examples. The study also discusses how Mirror Symmetry is encoded in the Type IIB backgrounds.

Holographic description of SCFT5 compactifications

Andrea Legramandi, Carlos Nunez

Summary: We present three infinite families of supersymmetric Type IIB backgrounds with AdS(4), AdS(3) and AdS(2) factors, which are dual to SCFTs in 3, 2 and 1 space-time dimensions respectively. These backgrounds emerge at low energies through a twisted compactification of five-dimensional N = 1 SCFTs on hyperbolic spaces. The holographic flows across dimensions are explicitly computed. We also discuss a family of SUSY breaking backgrounds corresponding to a QCD-like quiver with massive (bi)fundamental matter, and compute some field theoretical observables for these theories at the fixed points and along the flow.

On vortex and dark solitons in the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation

Angel Paredes, Jose R. Salgueiro, Humberto Michinel

Summary: We investigate topologically charged propagation-invariant eigenstates of a 1+2-dimensional Schrodinger equation with a cubic-quintic nonlinear term. We derive a simple formula for the bright vortex ring's inner and outer radii and analyze dark soliton solutions, finding an eigenvalue cutoff dependent on the topological charge. Additionally, we study the azimuthal stability of the eigenstates and find they are stable for all propagation constants, at least for small topological charges.

On the Hagedorn temperature in holographic confining gauge theories

Francesco Bigazzi, Tommaso Canneti, Aldo L. Cotrone

Summary: The paper investigates the divergence problem of the string partition function in curved spacetimes and presents a genus-zero estimate for the Hagedorn temperature. It shows that the Hagedorn temperature is proportional to the square root of the Yang-Mills confining string tension.

Wilson loops for 5d and 3d conformal linear quivers

Ali Fatemiabhari, Carlos Nunez

Summary: Within the electrostatic formulation, the expressions for Wilson loops in antisymmetric representations are studied in holographic duals of (balanced) conformal quivers in five and three dimensions. General expressions for various quantities participating in the formalism are derived and applied to examples, connecting some results present in the bibliography. In the case of three-dimensional quivers, a relation between Wilson loops in an 'electric' and in the 'magnetic/mirror' descriptions is presented. A detailed appendix relates the electrostatic and holomorphic description of the holographic duals to these strong coupling field theories.

Massive flows in AdS6/CFT5

Mohammad Akhond, Andrea Legramandi, Carlos Nunez, Leonardo Santilli, Lucas Schepers

Summary: We study the linear quiver type of five-dimensional N=1 Superconformal Field Theories and deform them by a relevant operator. The free energy is calculated at arbitrary mass parameter values and corresponds to a calculation in the supergravity dual background after regularisation. The F-theorem is verified in both field theory and supergravity for these flows. This letter presents some results from the companion paper [1].

Hall Droplet Sheets in Holographic QCD

Francesco Bigazzi, Aldo L. Cotrone, Andrea Olzi

Summary: In this paper, a string theory description of baryonic sheets in single-flavor holographic QCD is proposed. The sheets consist of a hard gluonic core, described by D6-branes, and a soft mesonic shell, dual to non-trivial D8-brane gauge field configurations. The holographic description allows for precise calculation of sheet observables including the tension, thickness, and four-dimensional effective actions.

Compactification of 6d N = (1,0) quivers, 4d SCFTs and their holographic dual Massive IIA backgrounds

Paul Merrikin, Carlos Nunez, Ricardo Stuardo

Summary: This paper studies an infinite family of Massive Type IIA backgrounds that holographically describe the twisted compactification of N = (1, 0) six-dimensional SCFTs to four dimensions. The analysis of the branes involved motivates a heuristic proposal for a four-dimensional linear quiver QFT that deconstructs the theory in six dimensions. For the case where the system reaches a strongly coupled fixed point, some observables are calculated and compared with holographic results. Two quantities measuring the number of degrees of freedom for the flow across dimensions are studied.

Axionic strings, domain walls, and baryons

Francesco Bigazzi, Aldo L. Cotrone, Andrea Olzi

Summary: When axionic strings carry a global charge, domain walls bounded by such strings may not be allowed to decay completely. This happens in particular in some models where a composite axionlike particle is the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of chiral symmetry breaking of an extra quark flavor. In this case, the global symmetry is the extra flavor baryonic symmetry. The corresponding axionic domain walls can carry a baryonic charge: they represent the low energy description of the baryons made by the extra quark flavor. Basic properties of these particles, such as spin, mass scale, and size are discussed. The corresponding charged axionic strings are explicitly constructed in a specific calculable model.
