We report on the observation of a new isomeric state in Ni-68. We suggest that the newly observed state at 168(1) keV above the first 2(+) state is a pi(2p-2h) 0(+) state across the major Z = 28 shell gap. Comparison with theoretical calculations indicates a pure proton intruder configuration and the deduced low-lying structure of this key nucleus suggests a possible shape coexistence scenario involving a highly deformed state.

Summary: The first experimental campaign was conducted using large-volume LaBr3:Ce and CeBr3 detectors from the Extreme Light Infrastructure-Nuclear physics (ELI-NP) and detectors and infrastructure from the ROSPHERE array at the 9 MV Tandem facility at IFIN-HH. The detectors and digital data acquisition system showed good energy resolution at high energies and excellent time resolution. Additionally, integration of the detector system and digital electronics with ancillary detectors was presented.

The Interrelated Roles of Correlations in the Nuclear Equation of State and in Response Functions: Application to a Chiral Confining Theory

Guy Chanfray, Magda Ericson, Marco Martini

Summary: We examine the influences of short-range correlations and pion and rho loops on nuclear matter properties and response functions. Our approach, which utilizes an adapted formulation of the Brueckner G-matrix method, generates a pair correlation function satisfying the Beg-Agassi-Gal theorem and naturally cuts off the loop integrals. We present results from a relativistic chiral theory that incorporates effects of quark confinement and the chirally broken vacuum, with parameters directly linked to QCD observables or constrained by established hadron phenomenology, offering a comprehensive understanding of the nuclear matter equation of state and the impact of correlations on neutrino-nucleus scattering.

Prospect for measurements of (?, n) reaction cross-sections of p-nuclei at ELI-NP

P. -A. Soderstrom, A. Kusoglu, D. Testov

Summary: The gamma beam system under construction at the ELI-NP facility in Romania will provide the nuclear physics community with a high-intensity, narrow bandwidth photon beam for studying stable isotopes from the astrophysical p-process. The neutron detection system, known as ELIGANT-TN, has already been implemented and is in use. This mini-review summarizes the current status of (?, n) cross-section data and the methods used to obtain them, and highlights the potential of the ELI-NP instrumentation and beam-lines to expand and improve such data.

Renewed Interest in Spectroscopy of the Lightest Doubly-Odd N = Z Nuclei

Asli Kusoglu, Dimiter Loukanov Balabanski

Summary: This article reviews the existing experimental data for the gamma decay of the stable N=Z doubly-odd nuclei and the beta decay of the corresponding isospin multiplets. It discusses the use of the structure of the lightest nuclei with masses A <= 14 to test and constrain ab initio nuclear theories. The article also addresses the lack of precision in some of the data obtained in the second half of the last century and highlights recent spectroscopic studies in the lightest doubly-odd N = Z nuclei, as well as open problems and future experiment ideas related to their understanding.

Summary: Excited levels in 92Kr, 96Zr, and 98Mo nuclei were studied using high-statistics multiple-γ coincidence data. New levels, especially with low spins, were searched for and spin-parity assignments to known levels were confirmed. The experimental results were compared with large-scale shell-model calculations to understand the microscopic structure of these nuclei.

Brink-Axel hypothesis in the pygmy-dipole resonance region

K. Sieja

Summary: The Brink-Axel hypothesis, which states that the photoabsorption cross section is independent of the excitation energy of a nuclear system, is used in nuclear structure studies and calculations of neutron-capture cross section for astrophysical applications. This study shows that the dipole photoabsorption cross section at low energy is actually dependent on the excitation energy and large deviations from the Brink-Axel hypothesis are observed for the ground state of an even-even system. Additionally, the low-lying E1-strength, known as pygmy dipole resonance, is found to be affected by the excitation energy of the initial state and strongly dependent on its structure. The implications of these findings on neutron-capture cross section calculations are discussed.

Summary: Currently, ?-ray tracking in germanium segmented detectors is achieved through two advanced and complex algorithms. Despite ongoing research and development, there is still room for further improvement. The common code for these algorithms presents challenges in both online/real-time and offline data pipelines. The AGATA collaboration has produced various software components and this review paper highlights their progress and future plans.

Summary: Excited states in Cu-78 were observed for the first time following the ss decay of Ni-78 created by in-flight fission of U-238. A level scheme comprising eight excited states with tentative spin assignments for 5 of them was constructed based on the coincidence relationships between the observed gamma-ray transitions. In addition, an isomeric state with a lifetime of 3.8(4) ms was found to decay by internal conversion.

Summary: The PANDORA project aims to study photonuclear reactions of light nuclei below a mass of A = 60 through experimental and theoretical research. Two experimental methods, virtual photon excitation and real photo absorption, will be used to measure photoabsorption cross sections and decay branching ratio as a function of photon energy. Various nuclear models will be employed to predict photonuclear reactions and evaluate uncertainty based on discrepancies between predictions and experimental data. The results will be implemented in the reaction calculation code TALYS for simulating the photo-disintegration process of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in inter-galactic propagation.
