Medium-spin structure of neutron rich nuclei Sr-92, Sr-94, and Sr-96 have been studied in spontaneous fission of Cm-248. New spin and parity assignments done in this work differ significantly from those reported in other works. The 9(-) excitations, involving the nu(g(7/2)h(11/2))(9)(-) maximum aligned configuration, were proposed in the three nuclei at 4930.2 keV, 4858.6 keV, and 3523.9 keV, respectively. Shell-model calculations, with the Ni-78 core, support the proposed nature of the 9(-) excitations. The new data allow testing the single-particle energies in the region of Ni-78, and in particular, the position of the nu h(11/2) orbital, which was not uniquely determined to date.

Shell-model based study of the direct capture in neutron-rich nuclei

K. Sieja, S. Goriely

Summary: This work focuses on the direct neutron-capture process for isotopes of astrophysical interest, using a shell-model approach to calculate spectra and spectroscopic factors in different target nuclei. A comparison of shell-model and global model results reveals discrepancies related to problems in level densities. The results indicate that direct neutron capture is non-negligible and even more important than Hauser-Feshbach predictions for the most neutron-rich nuclei close to the neutron drip line.

Single-Particle and Collective Structures in Neutron-Rich Sr Isotopes

Kamila Sieja

Summary: This study gains new insights into the structure of Sr isotopes in the region of N=60 through experimental studies on excited levels, transition strengths, and spectroscopic factors. A classic shell model is used to describe the structure of Sr isotopes, and spectroscopic factors are computed to understand the evolution of low-energy excitations. The origin of deformation at N=60 is mentioned in the context of shell model and Monte Carlo shell model calculations.

Direct Determination of Fission-Barrier Heights Using Light-Ion Transfer in Inverse Kinematics

S. A. Bennett, K. Garrett, D. K. Sharp, S. J. Freeman, A. G. Smith, T. J. Wright, B. P. Kay, T. L. Tang, I. A. Tolstukhin, Y. Ayyad, J. Chen, P. J. Davies, A. Dolan, L. P. Gaffney, A. Heinz, C. R. Hoffman, C. Muller-Gatermann, R. D. Page, G. L. Wilson

Summary: We present a novel technique for obtaining fission data for nuclei that are not in beta stability. These data are important for understanding the astrophysical r process, the origin of heavy elements, and developing predictive models for fission. They are also relevant for terrestrial applications in power generation and safeguarding. The solenoidal spectrometer technique, commonly used for studying nucleon-transfer reactions in inverse kinematics, has been successfully applied to deduce the fission-barrier height of 239U via the 238U(d, pf) reaction, confirming the validity of this technique.

Summary: Excited levels in 92Kr, 96Zr, and 98Mo nuclei were studied using high-statistics multiple-γ coincidence data. New levels, especially with low spins, were searched for and spin-parity assignments to known levels were confirmed. The experimental results were compared with large-scale shell-model calculations to understand the microscopic structure of these nuclei.

Brink-Axel hypothesis in the pygmy-dipole resonance region

K. Sieja

Summary: The Brink-Axel hypothesis, which states that the photoabsorption cross section is independent of the excitation energy of a nuclear system, is used in nuclear structure studies and calculations of neutron-capture cross section for astrophysical applications. This study shows that the dipole photoabsorption cross section at low energy is actually dependent on the excitation energy and large deviations from the Brink-Axel hypothesis are observed for the ground state of an even-even system. Additionally, the low-lying E1-strength, known as pygmy dipole resonance, is found to be affected by the excitation energy of the initial state and strongly dependent on its structure. The implications of these findings on neutron-capture cross section calculations are discussed.

Low-spin excitations in 89Br populated in β- decay of 89Se

T. Rzaca-Urban, K. Sieja, M. Czerwinski, J. Kurpeta, M. Pomorski, W. Urban, J. Wisniewski, M. Wroblewski, L. Canete, T. Eronen, S. Geldhof, A. Jokinen, A. Kankainen, I. D. Moore, D. Nesterenko, H. Penttila, I Pohjalainen, S. Rinta-Antila, A. de Roubin, M. Vilen

Summary: Low-spin, excited states of the Br-89 nucleus, produced in beta(-) decay of Se-89, have been studied for the first time. The gamma radiation following the beta(-) decay was measured using high-resolution germanium detectors. New levels and gamma transitions were observed, expanding the levels scheme of Br-89. The proposed spin-parity for the ground state of the Se-89 mother nucleus has been changed from (5/2(+)) to (3/2(+)). The observed beta(-) transition to the 1754.5-keV level suggests a pi g(9/2)-based configuration. The low-energy excitation scheme of Br-89 is proposed to be explained by excitations based on pi p(3/2) and pi f(5/2) single-particle levels.

Summary: This study investigates excited states in I-137 through ss decay of Te-137, establishing a new level scheme for I-137 and deducing the half-life of Te-137 and its ss-delayed neutron-emission probability. The experimental results provide valuable information for the theoretical description of nuclei in the region.

Summary: In this study, excited levels in 90Sr, 92Sr, 94Sr, and 96Sr nuclei were investigated, leading to the discovery of new levels and firm spin-parity assignments. A new coexisting deformed band was observed in the 96Sr nucleus. Summary: Excited states of the neutron-rich 89Br have been observed for the first time through cold neutron induced fission of 235U. The level structure appears similar to that of 87Br, which was confirmed by large valence space shell model calculations. Comparing the observed π g9/2 band with the results of the shell model calculations provides insights into the evolution of collectivity in this region.

Medium-spin states of the neutron-rich nucleus 87Br

B. M. Nyako, J. Timar, M. Csatlos, Zs Dombradi, A. Krasznahorkay, I Kuti, D. Sohler, T. G. Tornyi, M. Czerwinski, T. Rzaca-Urban, W. Urban, P. Baczyk, L. Atanasova, D. L. Balabanski, K. Sieja, A. Blanc, M. Jentschel, U. Koster, P. Mutti, T. Soldner, G. de France, G. S. Simpson, C. A. Ur

Summary: Medium-spin excited states of the neutron-rich nucleus Br-87 were observed and studied for the first time, with fission of U-235 induced by a cold neutron beam. The observed level scheme showed deviations from shell model predictions, particularly in the behavior of the pi g(9/2) band at high spins. This deviation is likely due to increased collectivity resulting from polarization of the core by high-j protons in the pi g(9/2) band.
