An excited state of N-22 unbound with respect to neutron emission was observed in a stripping reaction from a 85 MeV/nucleon F-26 beam. The observed decay energy of 650(50) keV places the level, which is interpreted to be the first 3(-) state, at an excitation energy of 1.93(22) MeV. Together with the previously measured bound states of N-22, reduction of the N=14 shell gap compared to less neutron-rich nitrogen isotopes at the neutron dripline is observed. Based on the magnitude of the reduction of the shell gap for N-22, a disappearance of the gap and even a level inversion of the nu 1s(1/2) and the nu 0d(5/2) levels in the neutron-unbound nucleus C-21 seems likely.

Disposition of Fluorine on New Firefighter Turnout Gear

Derek J. Muensterman, Ivan A. Titaley, Graham F. Peaslee, Leah D. Minc, Liliana Cahuas, Alix E. Rodowa, Yuki Horiuchi, Shogo Yamane, Thierry N. J. Fouquet, John C. Kissel, Courtney C. Carignan, Jennifer A. Field

Summary: Firefighter turnout gear is crucial for reducing exposure to hazardous chemicals, including PFASs. Limited data exists on the concentrations of nonvolatile and volatile PFASs on turnout gear, as well as the distribution of fluorine in the individual layers of gear. Further research is needed to understand the implications of fluorine exposure on turnout gear.

A worldwide evaluation of trophic magnification of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in aquatic ecosystems

Daniele de A. Miranda, Graham F. Peaslee, Alison M. Zachritz, Gary A. Lamberti

Summary: This review examines the trophic magnification factor (TMF) for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aquatic systems worldwide. The study found limited research on TMFs for PFAS, with a concentration in China, North America, and Europe. The most investigated compound was perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), which showed biomagnification in the food web. The review also discusses the variability in PFAS biomagnification and suggests standardizing TMFs for PFAS.

Summary: The impact of polymer backbone chemistry on Li+ ion conduction was examined in this study, and it was found that certain crosslinking agents significantly increased the conductivity of the electrolyte. The mechanism behind the formation of percolated particles and ion-rich domains was determined through various testing methods. This discovery has important implications for next-generation battery development.

Summary: A narrow near-threshold proton-emitting resonance (E-x = 11.4 MeV, J(pi) = 1/2(+), and Gamma(p) = 4.4 keV) was directly observed in B-11 via proton resonance scattering. The good agreement between both experimental results confirms the existence of such exotic decay and the particular behavior of weakly bound nuclei coupled to the continuum.

Summary: A novel pathway for the formation of multiparticle-multihole excited states in rare isotopes is reported, where highly energy-and momentum-dissipative inelastic-scattering events are observed. These events were measured in reactions of an intermediate-energy beam of 38Ca on a Be target. The study shows that these energetic collisions offer a practical pathway to nuclear-structure studies of more complex multiparticle configurations in rare isotopes.

M. Cortesi, S. Dziubinski, A. Gade, R. Zegers, J. Pereira, J. Asciutto, S. Lidia, D. Bazin

Summary: This article presents the development of a novel heavy-ion particle-identification (PID) device based on energy-loss measurement to be used in the S800 spectrograph at the FRIB facility. The new instrument, called ELOSS, consists of a segmented optical detector filled with xenon, surrounded by photomultiplier tubes. It is expected to provide high-resolution AE measurements and timing information, which will have a significant impact on the design and implementation of rare-isotope beam experiments.

Simulations and analysis tools for charge-exchange (d, 2He) reactions in inverse kinematics with the AT-TPC

S. Giraud, J. C. Zamora, R. G. T. Zegers, Y. Ayyad, D. Bazin, W. Mittig, A. Carls, M. DeNudt, Z. Rahman

Summary: Charge-exchange (d,2He) reactions in inverse kinematics at intermediate energies are a promising method for studying Gamow-Teller transition strength in unstable nuclei. A simulation and analysis software based on the ATTPCROOT package was developed to investigate such reactions using the AT-TPC. The software allows for realistic detector response simulation, development of analysis tools, and investigation of space-charge effects in track reconstruction.

Summary: For the first time, the (d, 2He) reaction was successfully used in inverse kinematics to extract the Gamow-Teller transition strength in the & beta; thorn direction from an unstable nucleus. The new technique opens a path to addressing a range of scientific challenges, including in astrophysics and neutrino physics. In this study, the nucleus 14O was examined and its Gamow-Teller transition strength to 14N was extracted, providing insights into the quenching phenomenon.

Summary: Subjecting a physical system to extreme conditions is a common method to gain a better understanding of its organization and structure. The investigation of isotopes with different neutron-to-proton ratios than stable nuclei is an important test for nuclear-structure theories. This study reports the first observation of the decay of O-28 and 27O isotopes and compares their decay energies with theoretical models. The results have implications for the understanding of nuclear structure.

Summary: Inelastic proton scattering experiments in inverse kinematics were performed on the rare isotopes 74,76Kr to study their structure. The focus was on the J pi = 4+1 states and the hexadecapole degree of freedom. By performing coupled-channels calculations, deformation parameters /34 for the Kr isotopes were determined, and two possible solutions were found. Comparisons to predictions from nuclear energy density functional theory favored large, positive /34 solutions, which are linked to well deformed prolate configurations. The /34 values may serve as sensitive measures of the nuclear shell structure.

Relative population of states in 21Mg from few-nucleon removal reactions

B. Longfellow, A. Gade, D. Bazin, P. C. Bender, M. Bowry, B. A. Brown, B. Elman, E. Lunderberg, D. Rhodes, M. Spieker, D. Weisshaar, S. J. Williams

Summary: Intermediate-energy nuclear reactions involving the removal of three, four, and five nucleons can proceed through nondissipative and statistical processes. In this experiment at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, gamma-ray spectroscopy was used to study few-nucleon removal reactions from different projectile beams to the same reaction product. The results showed significant differences in the population of states in the reaction product, which were correlated with the spins of the states. This intermediate regime may have the potential to produce unique level populations in fast-beam experiments and alter isomer to ground state ratios.

Summary: The heavy-ion inelastic scattering of neutron-rich nucleus 29Ne to its excited states was studied using a 100.1 MeV/u 29Ne rare isotope beam. The simultaneous measurements of the two inelastic reactions were conducted, providing the first measurement of transition strengths for this isotope. A significant E2 strength in the excitation to the 931-keV state was observed, indicating a large degree of collectivity.
