Summary: A multifunctional quorum sensing (QS) inhibitor based on a bioactive hydrogel system was developed to accelerate wound healing. The gel was found to synergistically inhibit the QS of bacteria, destroy biofilm formation, and promote wound healing by releasing specific substances and generating reactive oxygen species.

Summary: A new bifunctional nanosystem (HPT-RP) was developed for the treatment of infected wounds, with high antibacterial and gene delivery capabilities. By conjugating photosensitizers and bacterium/cell-affinity phenylboronic acid onto hyper branched polyaminoglycosides, HPT-RP showed great potential in combating infections and promoting gene transfection.

Summary: A bilayered gelatin/acryloyl & beta;-cyclodextrin hydrogel loaded with humic acids and astragaloside IV in the lower layer and verteporfin in the upper layer was developed to treat bacteria-infected cutaneous wounds. The hydrogel alleviates oxidative stress, promotes M2 macrophage polarization and angiogenesis during the inflammation and early proliferation phases, and inhibits excessive vessel growth during the late proliferation and remodeling phases.

Summary: To enhance the healing of infected wounds without using antibiotics, a new strategy combining zinc-metal-organic framework (MOF) with photodynamic therapy (PDT) was developed. The strategy involved using a Chlorin e6 (Ce6)-loaded zinc-MOF hydrogel (Ce6@MOF-Gel) to release Ce6 in an acid-responsive manner, improving antibacterial effects and promoting wound healing. The Ce6@MOF-Gel showed enhanced stability, solubility, and photodynamic properties of Ce6, reducing inflammation and facilitating collagen deposition and re-epithelialization for accelerated healing.

Summary: A core-shell structured nanocomposite, consisting of polypyrrole (PPy) nanosheets synthesized in the restricted area of layered bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanosheets, demonstrates excellent photothermal and photodynamic synergistic antibacterial activity under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. The atomic-level interface contact and bonding between PPy and BiOCl improve the light-to-heat conversion capabilities of PPy and enhance the transmission of photogenerated charge carriers. These nanocomposites exhibit deep tissue penetration, good biocompatibility, and accelerated wound healing through antimicrobial activity and skin repair function.

Summary: The present study developed a L-proline conjugated chitosan scaffold for wound healing. The scaffold was characterized by various tests and showed no cytotoxicity. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the modified scaffold promoted wound closure and collagen deposition. These findings suggest that the L-proline conjugated scaffold has potential as a wound dressing to improve wound healing.

Summary: Chronic wound healing is a significant financial burden on healthcare systems, and using natural products as alternative therapy can reduce costs and maintain effectiveness. A study developed phytotherapeutic gels for use in photodynamic therapy, which showed significant antibiotic potential and promising results in animal experiments, making them a viable alternative for future pharmaceutical applications.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a 3D human heterotypic model to study the interactions between immune cells and cancer cells, as well as investigate the behavior of Foslip (R) in a macrophage-enriched 3D model. The results showed that the microenvironment could significantly modulate photo-induced cell death in the context of photodynamic therapy with Foslip (R).

Summary: Antibiotics have shown limited effectiveness in destroying biofilms and lead to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and chronic infections. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) have emerged as potential alternatives to antibiotics by effectively activating the immune system and promoting wound tissue proliferation. However, there is still debate on whether the success of PDT/PTT in antimicrobial and wound healing depends solely on the cytotoxic effects or also on host immune system activation. This study investigates the dependence of PDT/PTT-induced microbial apoptosis and wound healing on immune activation and macrophage phenotype transformation and highlights the significant role of macrophage phenotype transformation in improving wound healing.

Summary: This article presents the preparation and antibacterial efficacy of chitosan-coated Prussian blue nanoparticles loaded with the photosensitizer fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran (CHPB-FD). The nanoparticles effectively eradicate drug-resistant bacteria and promote wound healing in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. The presence of white light further enhances the antibacterial efficacy of CHPB-FD nanoparticles.
