Accurate log processing by harvesters during bucking is of great importance if round timber is to be fully exploited for maximum value recovery. Logs that exceed the target length can cause difficulties in further processing (e.g., in the pulp industry), while logs which are too short may not be of further use (e.g., boards for pallets). It can be difficult to achieve accurate log lengths due to irregular tree trunk shapes or errors in the measurement system in the harvester head. The objective of the research was to investigate how tree species and log diameter affect bucking length accuracy. The research was carried out in a premature broadleaved stand of birch and aspen in the third age class in the Zaporowo Forest District, northern Poland (54 degrees 24'47 '' N, 20 degrees 8'5 '' E). The thinning operation was carried out in early spring before the start of the growing season and after the snow cover had melted. Trees were cut using a UTC 150-6LS harvester, equipped with a CTL 40HW harvester head designed for hardwood. Pulp wood was harvested from the trees with an intended length of 2.50 m and a tolerance of +/- 0.05 m. The on-board harvester computer was set to a length tolerance of between 2.46 m and 2.54 m. More than 80% of the thicker birch and aspen logs (d1/2 > 14 cm) met the target length (2.50 +/- 0.05 m), while only 70% and 50% of the thinner birch and aspen logs (d1/2 <= 14 cm) reached the target. For top logs, a different length tolerance should be applied compared to butt logs in order to achieve higher efficiency in length accuracy.

Determining Harvester Productivity Curves of Thinning Operations in Birch Stands of Central Europe

Martyna Rosinska, Mariusz Bembenek, Rodolfo Picchio, Zbigniew Karaszewski, Andreja Duka, Piotr S. Mederski

Summary: This research focuses on the productivity and challenges of using harvesters in birch stands in Northern and Northwestern Poland. The results show that productivity is mainly influenced by the size of harvested trees, and the top diameter of the last log is related to the diameter at breast height.

Mechanised Harvesting of Broadleaved Tree Species in Europe

Piotr S. Mederski, Janine Schweier, Andreja Duka, Petros Tsioras, Leo G. Bont, Mariusz Bembenek

Summary: This review examines the application of cut-to-length (CTL) technology for harvesting broadleaved tree species in Europe. The study focuses on the productivity and product quality aspects of mechanized forest operations and identifies the challenges and areas for improvement in harvesting broadleaved tree species.

Bioethanol Production Efficiency from Sorghum Waste Biomass

Jakub Frankowski, Aleksandra Wawro, Jolanta Batog, Katarzyna Szambelan, Agnieszka Lacka

Summary: The study demonstrated that sorghum biomass can be used for bioethanol production with high bioethanol yield. The average yield for all cultivars, except GK Emese, was highest in the second year. Significant differences were found in the content of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin among different varieties.

Determining macrophyte species richness and dark diversity sources-A novel approach to improve the biodiversity estimation based on species traits

Krzysztof Szoszkiewicz, Anna Budka, Agnieszka Lacka, Karol Pietruczuk

Summary: Biodiversity assessment in rivers using Hill numbers and Chao estimators helps identify macrophyte groups rich in species and sources of dark diversity. Difficulty in field identification was observed for certain plant categories, while certain categories were easier to assess.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of pellets obtained from different tree parts of five species and found that pellets from plantation trees of Eucalyptus spp. and thinnings of Fagus sylavtica L. had the best quality, while pellets made from coppice Eucalyptus spp. and Robinia pseudoacacia L. had the least attractive types. The study also showed a link between stem age and pellet quality, with increasing stem age resulting in better pellet characteristics.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of the Syncrofalke 3t truck-mounted Processor Tower Yarder (PTY) on steep terrain and determined its productivity and costs, highlighting factors that could increase its effectiveness. The study was conducted in a pure Scots pine stand in the Sredna Gora Mountains, Central Bulgaria, showing that PTY had high productivity and costs in this environment.

Summary: This article introduces the history, development trends, construction materials, and functional aesthetic solutions of urban furniture. Through a questionnaire survey, the preferences and expectations of urban furniture users were analyzed and the results were statistically analyzed. This is very helpful in achieving harmony between the positive image of the city and the comfort of public spaces.

Comparison of the Foraging Activity of Bats in Coniferous, Mixed, and Deciduous Managed Forests

Andrzej Wegiel, Witold Grzywinski, Radoslaw Jaros, Agnieszka Lacka, Jolanta Wegiel

Summary: This study aims to compare the foraging activity of bats in different forest types and test whether it varies seasonally. Sample points were selected in coniferous, mixed, and deciduous forests in western Poland. Bat calls were recorded using automated ultrasound recording devices during five consecutive nights from May to September. Eight bat species and seven sonotype groups were recorded with no significant differences in total activity between forest types. However, there were high seasonal fluctuations in bat foraging activity.

Herbicidal ionic liquids containing double or triple anions as a new potential tool for weed control including herbicide-resistant biotypes

Katarzyna Marcinkowska, Tadeusz Praczyk, Michal Niemczak, Tomasz Rzemieniecki, Damian Krystian Kaczmarek, Agnieszka Lacka, Juliusz Pernak

Summary: In this study, eight new double-anion and eight new triple-anion herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs) were synthesized. These HILs showed high efficacy in controlling dicotyledonous weeds, and some compounds had good surface properties for foliar application. The research indicates that HILs containing a cation of natural origin and herbicidal anions with different modes of action have the potential to be a new tool for weed management. The use of multicomponent HILs enables effective weed control with lower doses.

Effect of logging residue removal and mechanical site preparation on productivity of the subsequent Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands

Andrzej Wegiel, Jakub Jakubowski, Marta Molinska-Glura, Krzysztof Polowy, Jolanta Wegiel, Roman Gornowicz

Summary: Removal of logging residue negatively affected tree diameter and height, but had no significant effect on the basal area of the subsequent stand (in the mid-term). Different methods of mechanical site preparation (bedding, plowing furrows, and trenching) had no effect on tree growth 1 year after planting, but had a significant effect on tree diameter, tree height, and basal area in the mid-term. Bedding treatments could have a significant positive impact on the productivity of the subsequent Scots pine stands, even when planted on sandy, free-draining soils.

Summary: Technical infrastructure is crucial for timber harvesting contractors, affecting work efficiency, quality, and worker safety. This study examines the impact of SFH public tender requirements on the technical equipment of forestry companies and finds that tenders do not effectively stimulate technological development in the industry.
