Cross-linked functional polymers (functional resins) are versatile, designable and useful supports for metal nanoclusters that are able to provide reasonably thermally and mechanically stable multi-functional metal catalysts characterized by good activity and selectivity. The paper reviews authors' contributions to the field from the early 1990s to the present.

Microgels as Soluble Scaffolds for the Preparation of Noble Metal Nanoparticles Supported on Nanostructured Metal Oxides

Summary: The method involves the sequential generation of noble metal nanoparticles and metal oxide phase inside a cross-linked polymer colloid, allowing independent tuning of their properties and amounts. The resulting composite colloids, when isolated by precipitation and subsequent calcination, exhibit noble metal nanoparticles dispersed on a crystalline, nanostructured oxide phase. Preliminary catalytic tests show promising catalytic performances, particularly in the case of gold, in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols.

Summary: This paper describes the wide and complex tunability of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) supported on nanoporous polymer matrices and their correlation with the performance in aerobic oxidation reactions. The size and distribution of the AuNPs can be controlled through different synthetic methods, and thermal or solvent annealing can modify the crystalline phase of the polymer and the morphology of the AuNPs, leading to enhanced catalytic activity.

Summary: In this study, metal-free nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts obtained from chitosan, chitin, and shrimp shell wastes were used for the synthesis of organic cyclic carbonates from CO2. The catalysts showed good stability and reusability, with ca. (75 +/- 3)% of the initial conversion achieved/retained after six recycles.
