Psittaciformes are one of the most endangered groups of birds, and several Brazilian species are classified between vulnerable and critically endangered. It is thus necessary to identify agents that cause infections in captive wild animals and to assess the risks posed thereof and to design interventions to minimize the possibility of disease outbreaks, leading to the conservation of endangered species. The purpose of this study was to identify enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) cloacal isolates from asymptomatic psittacines in captivity and evaluate the distribution of the EPEC pathotype. Cloacal swabs were obtained from 46 asymptomatic birds, and resulting isolates were tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of the attaching and effacing gene (eae) and bundle-forming pilus structural gene (bfpA) of EPEC. Samples from several species were tested, and three samples were found to be positive for the eae and bfpA genes and characterized as typical EPEC. This is the first report of this pathotype in asymptomatic psittacines. Although certain E. coli strains are more pathogenic than others, various factors should be considered when determining the potential of E. coli isolates to cause disease in captive psittacines. Birds that are positive for the EPEC (typical) strain could be zoonotic sources of infection, and may have acquired these strains through contact with humans or domestic animals. These findings may also be valuable for the long-term management of endangered species ex situ as one EPEC sample was isolated from a Red-tailed Amazon (Amazona brasiliensis).

Summary: Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) is a globally distributed pathogen associated with human and companion animal diseases, while avian pathogenic pathotype (APEC) severely impacts poultry health and production. The similarities between APEC and human ExPEC suggest a potential for zoonotic transmission.

Salmonella Heidelberg and Salmonella Minnesota in Brazilian broilers: Genomic characterization of third-generation cephalosporin and fluoroquinolone-resistant strains

Summary: Salmonella serovars Heidelberg and Minnesota with resistance to third-generation cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones are frequently found in Brazilian poultry. Genomic analysis revealed the presence of virulent and multidrug-resistant characteristics in these isolates, with AmpC beta-lactamase (bla(CMY-2)) predominance in Salmonella Minnesota (SM) and some Salmonella Heidelberg (SH) on IncC plasmid replicons. The study also identified close genetic similarity between the Brazilian isolates and poultry/food isolates from Europe, as well as human isolates from European countries importing Brazilian poultry meat. Overall, this research highlights the ongoing acquisition and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance in SH and Minnesota, raising concerns for importing countries and emphasizing the need to control AMR in major poultry-exporting countries like Brazil.

Summary: This study determined the nasal carriage rate of coagulase-positive staphylococci (CoPS) in healthy dogs and in-contact people and investigated their genotypic characteristics and phylogenetic relatedness. The results showed clonally related CoPS in humans and dogs within some households, highlighting the importance of continuous surveillance from a One Health perspective.

Summary: The study investigated whether apparently healthy birds in protected areas in northeastern Brazil were shedding bacterial pathogens to the environment and found that different protected areas did not show a significant relationship in bacteria distribution. The birds in the sampled protected areas may host a variety of potentially pathogenic microorganisms, with antibiotic-resistant Enterobacterales posing a potential impact on bird populations and environmental conservation.
