The objective of this work was to evaluate ion concentrations in an Oxisol solution, in plots subjected to different management systems. Continuous crop and pasture, and the integrated crop-livestock management system were evaluated. The experiment started in 1991, and the soil solutions were collected in 2005 and 2006. Ceramic cups were installed at 20 and 150 cm soil depths, and the solutions were extracted six times each year. The concentrations of Cl(-), SO(4)(2-), NO(3)(-), H(2)PO(4)(-), K(+), Mg(2+), and Ca(2+) were determined. Irrespective of the depths and cropping systems considered, the concentrations of ions into the soil solutions, in decreasing order, were: NO(3)(-)>Cl(-)>SO(4)(2-)>H(2)PO(4)(-) and Ca(2)(+) >K(+) >Mg(2+). Among the cropping systems, the ion concentrations in the soil solution was higher in the continuous crop under conventional tillage, followed by the continuous crop under no-tillage, and finally by the integrated crop-livestock system and the continuous pasture. At 150 cm depth, the ion concentrations in soil solutions under continuous pasture and integrated crop-livestock system were always low, which indicates a low leaching risk.

Effects of companion crops and tillage on soil phosphorus in a Brazilian oxisol: a chemical and 31P NMR spectroscopy study

Summary: This study found that planting companion crops with maize resulted in higher concentrations of available and labile inorganic phosphorus in soil samples, especially with leguminous species. The proportion and amount of P-Orthophosphate increased, while there was a slight increase in P-Monoester content in P-31 NMR analysis. Overall, the proportion of organic P decreased when a legume companion crop was associated with maize.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the endogeic earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus significantly increased rice shoot biomass and P nutrition in P-deficient Ferralsol soil. The calculation of L-value is subject to various uncertainties, which should be considered in further research.

Summary: Free-living nematodes have beneficial effects on plant growth and nutrition, especially in fields with high plant diversity. The intact soil core technique proves to be a robust means of mimicking field conditions and is a promising tool to assess the effects of ecological intensification of agricultural practices on soil processes.

Summary: Plant diversification is essential for ecologically intensifying agroecosystems to enhance sustainability and resilience. Legume mixtures showed significant positive effects on rice growth, soil fertility, weed and nematode control. The choice of plant species is crucial for optimizing ecosystem functions and profitability in rainfed rice cultivation.

Summary: Diversifying plant communities through crop rotation or agroforestry shows positive effects on soil fertility in tropical agroecosystems, with outcomes varying depending on soil type and presence of legumes in the community. Legumes are beneficial for volcanic soils, while communities without legumes are more effective in Ferralsols. Overall, multifactorial and multi-sites experiments are crucial for designing optimal plant diversification in agroecological systems.

Nutrient Flows and Balances in Mixed Farming Systems in Madagascar

Marie Lucia Fanjaniaina, Fabien Stark, Noelly Phostin Ramarovahoaka, Jeanny Fiononana Rakotoharinaivo, Tovonarivo Rafolisy, Paulo Salgado, Thierry Becquer

Summary: Mixed farming systems are important for soil fertility and crop production in sub-Saharan Africa. Nutrient recycling through crop-livestock integration practices plays a crucial role in the functioning of these systems. More intensive farms generally have better nutrient balance, and improved biomass management methods can reduce nutrient losses.

Effect of Rhizobium Inoculation on Growth of Common Bean in Low-Fertility Tropical Soil Amended with Phosphorus and Lime

Summary: Cultivating grain legumes in sub-Saharan Africa has multiple benefits, including providing food for a growing population and contributing to soil fertility through symbiotic nitrogen fixation. However, the success of nitrogen fixation is hindered by various factors. In trials conducted in low-fertility tropical soils in Madagascar, it was found that the inoculation of native Rhizobium strains and phosphorus fertilization significantly improved bean root nodulation, plant growth, and yield, while the addition of lime had no effect.

Summary: The study found that ultramafic rocks in Niquelandia, Brazil contain high concentrations of Ni and Cr, which may affect soil functioning. The behavior of Ni in these soils is primarily controlled by organic matter, while Cr is more likely to be released from Fe-oxides by anionic exchange. Metals may be exported to surrounding ecosystems.

Biomass harvesting leads to soil acidification: a study of mixed crop-livestock farming systems in Madagascar

Summary: Soil acidification and declining fertility are common issues in sub-Saharan Africa, primarily due to nutrient depletion from biomass removal without replenishment through fertilisation. In the smallholder mixed crop-livestock farming systems in the Malagasy Highlands of Madagascar, nutrient losses and soil acidification are caused by crop harvesting and biomass removal.
