The aim of this work was to evaluate the biometric and physiological responses of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) to water deficit (WD), during different phenological phases. Genotypes IACSP 94-2094 and IACSP 96-2042 were subjected to WD conditions during the initial, maximum and sucrose accumulation phases. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design. Susceptibility to WD was established by reduction in stalk dry matter and soluble solids. Water deficit reduced leaf gas exchange in all phenological phases of both genotypes. Lower plant height, less stalk dry matter and soluble solids, and reduction in number and length of internodes were only observed during the initial growth phase of the IACSP 96-2042 clone. In the initial growth phase, tolerance to WD was observed for IACSP 94-2094, with evidence of physiological acclimation, and for IACSP 96-2042 in reduction phytomass production and its soluble solid content, caused by lower stomatal conductance and lower apparent carboxylation efficiency which limit photosynthesis. Regardless of the phenological phase, genotype IACSP 94-2094 was tolerant to WD, since its phytomass production was maintained even with impairment of leaf gas exchange.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate if accumulation of K+ in sugarcane leaves attenuates the effects of water deficit. The results showed that plants with extra K+ exhibited higher water use efficiency and osmotic adjustment capacity under drought conditions, promoting maintenance of cell turgor and potentially enhancing resistance to water deficit in sugarcane plants.

Photosynthetic efficiency and root plasticity promote drought tolerance in coffee genotypes

Summary: The study compared the responses of two potential genotypes and two commercial cultivars to drought and water recovery, and determined the drought tolerance strategies of the new genotypes by measuring root anatomy and photosynthetic parameters. The results showed that the new genotypes enhanced drought tolerance by increasing root hair number and adjusting root structure. Despite the reduction of photosynthetic parameters under drought conditions, the genotypes showed higher photosynthetic efficiency after water recovery.

Boron foliar supplementation as a strategy to attenuate drought stress in soybean

Summary: Drought is a major abiotic stress that limits crop growth and yield worldwide. Mineral nutrients, such as boron (B), have shown promise in increasing plant tolerance to abiotic stresses. This study aimed to evaluate the benefits of foliar application of B in relieving water stress-induced physiological damages in soybean. Results showed that foliar supplementation with B increased antioxidant enzyme activities and reduced stress marker levels, resulting in improved plant growth and higher yield. Overall, foliar application of B proved to be an alternative management strategy for mitigating drought stress in soybean.

Soybean Plants Exposed to Low Concentrations of Potassium Iodide Have Better Tolerance to Water Deficit through the Antioxidant Enzymatic System and Photosynthesis Modulation

Summary: Water deficit inhibits plant growth and leads to overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing oxidative stress. Iodine (I) has been shown to enhance the antioxidant defense system and improve photosynthesis under adverse conditions. In this study, soybean plants exposed to potassium iodide (KI) concentrations of 10 and 20 .mol L-1 showed increased biomass, improved gas exchange, and reduced lipid peroxidation under water deficit. However, higher KI concentrations negatively affected photosynthetic efficiency, biomass accumulation, and partition under well-irrigated conditions.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of potassium iodide (KI) in mitigating water deficits and improving fruit quality in tomatoes. The results showed that a concentration of 100 μM of KI increased the yield of tomatoes under a water deficit condition, and also improved antioxidant activity and photosynthetic efficiency, while reducing malondialdehyde levels. Additionally, this concentration of KI promoted better fruit quality through increased antioxidant capacity and a decline in the maturation index.

Summary: This study aimed to identify salt-tolerant cultivars of sugarcane for cultivation in saline soils. Through testing ten cultivars and two sugarcane species, significant variation in salt tolerance was found. Some cultivars and species exhibited good salt tolerance. These findings can provide valuable information for growers to cultivate sugarcane in saline soils and for sugarcane breeding programs to improve salt tolerance.

Mapping phenotypic parameters linked to salt stress tolerance strategies in rice lines

Summary: Salinity is a major abiotic stress that affects the productivity of crops, particularly rice. This study evaluated the sensitivity and tolerance of upland rice lines to salinity. The results showed that salinity levels significantly influenced emergence and survival rates, while grain weight per plant was a reliable indicator of tolerance to salinity. Lines L6, L7, and L8 exhibited outstanding performance with minimal decreases in grain weight under increased NaCl treatments.
