BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As atherosclerosis is a lifelong process, prevention of exposure to its risk factors should start at an early age. Our aim was to study the influences of repeated low saturated fat dietary counseling on dietary intakes and lipoprotein measures from infancy to adulthood. METHODS: Dietary intakes (food records) and serum lipid profile were studied annually from 7 months to 19 years of age in an atherosclerosis prevention study (Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project), comprising 540 children in the intervention group and 522 children in the control group. Serum total and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) were measured and used to estimate very low-density lipoprotein-TG, intermediate-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and HDL2-C, as well as apolipoproteins A-1 and B. RESULTS: Compared with controls, the intervention children had a lower saturated fat intake (mean daily difference [95% confidence interval] between groups: -2.1 [-2.3, -1.9] percentage of total energy intake in boys; -1.9 [-2.1, -1.7] percentage of total energy intake in girls, both P < 001) and LDL-C concentration (difference [95% confidence interval] between groups: -0.18 [-0.26, -0.10] mmol/L, P < .001 in boys; -0.10 [-0.19, -0.01] mmol/L, P = .037 in girls), whereas HDL-C and apolipoprotein A-1 did not differ between the study groups. In boys, total cholesterol and intermediate-density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein-TG, apolipoprotein B, and TG concentrations were also lower in the intervention than in the control group, whereas no differences were found in girls. CONCLUSIONS: Repeated dietary counseling is effective in decreasing saturated fat intake and serum LDL-C values from infancy until 19 years of age in both genders. In boys, significant intervention effects are evident in various lipoprotein measures, indicating a more favorable lipid profile in the counseling group. Pediatrics 2012; 129: e704-e713

Summary: Circulating cell-free DNA (cf-DNA) levels are associated with age, sex, smoking, physical activity, vegetable consumption, ageing phenotypes, and various biomarkers. Higher cf-DNA levels were found in men, especially middle-aged men and women who smoke, and older frail individuals. Inflammatory markers, metabolites, and antioxidant levels were correlated with cf-DNA levels. These findings have implications for future studies on the epidemiology and biological mechanisms of cf-DNA and its potential as a clinical marker.

Cross-sectionally Calculated Metabolic Aging Does Not Relate to Longitudinal Metabolic Changes-Support for Stratified Aging Models

Summary: This study tested whether cross-sectional modeling can distinguish slow vs accelerated aging in a human population. A machine learning model was trained to predict age and tested against longitudinal data. The results showed that the cross-sectional proxy failed to predict longitudinal observations, suggesting that differences in starting points may explain diverging aging rates.

Summary: The study found that adverse childhood psychosocial factors are associated with midlife learning ability and memory. Specifically, poor self-regulatory behavior and social adjustment in childhood are related to poorer learning ability and memory 30 years later.

Summary: Physical activity during adolescence is significantly associated with the metabolic profile, including serum lipoproteins, amino acids, and glucose metabolism. These results support recommendations for physical activity during adolescence to promote health and reduce future disease risks.

Residential green environments are associated with human milk oligosaccharide diversity and composition

Mirkka Lahdenpera, Laura Galante, Carlos Gonzales-Inca, Jussi Vahtera, Jaana Pentti, Samuli Rautava, Niina Kayhko, Chloe Yonemitsu, Julia Gupta, Lars Bode, Hanna Lagstrom

Summary: The study suggests that properties of the mother's residential green environment, such as greenness, vegetation cover diversity, and naturalness index, are associated with changes in the composition of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), which have health effects on infants. The results highlight the mediating role of breastfeeding between residential green environments and early life health.

Summary: This study compared body composition, visceral adiposity, adipocytokines, and low-grade inflammation markers in prepubertal offspring of mothers who were treated with metformin or insulin for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The results showed that children in the metformin group had higher adiponectin concentration and lower leptin/adiponectin-ratio compared to the insulin group, but there were no significant differences in adiposity, body composition, liver fat, or inflammation markers between the two groups.

Factors influencing vulnerability to climate change-related health impacts in cities-A conceptual framework

Summary: Climate change will have adverse impacts on human health, especially in cities. While direct impacts are well-studied, the indirect and deferred impacts remain poorly understood. Factors moderating these impacts have received little attention, despite their importance for adaptation. To address this gap, a conceptual framework was developed to understand the pathways and factors influencing the severity of climate-related health impacts in urban environments. This framework provides valuable insights for anticipatory adaptation strategies and highlights the need for an integrated systemic approach to address multiple health risks.

Longitudinal metabolomics of increasing body-mass index and waist-hip ratio reveals two dynamic patterns of obesity pandemic

Summary: This observational study examines the complex temporal associations between body-mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and circulating metabolomics. It uses longitudinal and cross-sectional population-based datasets and new systems epidemiology tools. The results show that age-associated weight variation in adults between 24 and 49 manifests as temporal divergence in BMI and uniform progression of WHR.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of land cover and greenness around homes on the development of doctor-diagnosed eczema in children by the age of 2 years. The results showed that greenness around the home during early childhood does not protect against eczema, but exposure to coniferous and mixed forests may increase the risk of eczema.

Associations of active commuting to school in childhood and physical activity in adulthood

Summary: This study examined the relationship between active commuting to school in childhood and adolescence and active commuting to work and overall physical activity in adulthood. The findings showed that active commuting in childhood was associated with higher levels of leisure-time physical activity and daily steps in adulthood. These results suggest that promoting active commuting from an early age can contribute to physical activity in adulthood.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the long-term associations between breastfeeding duration and lipid levels in children. The results showed that infants who received breast milk at seven months had higher levels of HDL cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol compared to those who did not receive breast milk.
