Summary: This study aims to predict adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in very preterm neonates. By using brain MRI and extracting radiomic features, it was found that radiomic features outperformed clinical variables in predicting motor outcomes, and combining the two improved predictive performance.

Summary: This study compared the neurodevelopmental outcomes at 18-24 months of corrected age between preterm infants with very low birth weight (VLBW) conceived with and without the assistance of in vitro fertilization (IVF). The results showed no significant differences in neurodevelopmental outcomes between the two groups.

Summary: The study compared growth curves of very low birth weight preterm infants post-hospital discharge. Results showed substantial agreement between Fenton and Kim vs. Intergrowth-21st charts, but WHO and Intergrowth-21st had identified more cases of preterm infants below -2 z, suggesting the need for further investigation in clinical practice.

Summary: Choline is essential for the development of infants, especially very low birth weight infants. However, the choline content in breast milk is lower after preterm delivery, and current formulas and fortified breast milk do not provide sufficient choline to achieve physiological concentrations. Increasing enteral choline intake is suggested to improve the growth and long-term development of very low birth weight infants.

Summary: The study demonstrated that preterm donor milk does not impact the growth of very-low-birth-weight infants, but significantly reduces feeding intolerance, shortens hospitalization time, and provides protective effects against necrotizing enterocolitis and sepsis. This suggests that preterm donor milk may lower the rate of infection in preterm infants and is worth promoting.

Summary: Being born preterm and at very low birth weight is associated with increased cardiopulmonary disorders in childhood and potential late cardiac effects, including right ventricular remodeling and occult pulmonary hypertension as survivors age. In a population-based study, young adults born PT at VLBW exhibited smaller RV dimensions compared to normal-weight term-born controls, with slightly reduced RV function detected using strain imaging. Birth weight and gestational age were related to these differences, highlighting the potential importance of echocardiographic strain imaging in detecting RV function disparities in this population.

Summary: The study evaluated the orofacial characteristics of very low-birth-weight preterm infants through anthropometric facial measures and analyzed the relationship between the gum pads. The results showed that these infants had the highest values in the upper third in facial harmony analysis, with the mandible predominantly in a retrognathic position relative to the maxilla, and overbite-overjet being the most prevalent type of gum pad relationship.

Summary: This multicenter case-control study aimed to analyze the perinatal risk factors and morbidity of pulmonary hemorrhage (PH) among very preterm infants. The results showed that CPAP failure was significantly associated with PH, and PH increased the risk of death and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Summary: This study investigated the epidemiology and microbiology of early-onset sepsis (EOS) among very preterm infants from 2018 to 2019. The findings revealed an incidence rate of 13.5 per 1000 very preterm births, with Escherichia coli and group B Streptococcus being the most common pathogens. Infected infants had longer hospital stays and lower survival rates, emphasizing the need for novel preventive strategies.

Summary: The study found that most VLBWIs in the Yangtze River Delta region were infants with birth weights between 750g and 1500g, with premature rupture of membranes being the main cause of preterm birth. In terms of care practices, the rates of umbilical vein catheterization and peripherally inserted central catheter were 25.0% and 64.4% respectively. The study also showed that the mortality rate of preterm infants was 3.4%, with main complications including BPD, PDA, ROP, NEC and sepsis.

Summary: This study compared the rates of preterm birth (PTB) and very low birth weight (VLBW) in 5 hospitals during the early COVID era (Jan-Dec 2020) to the pre-COVID period (Jan 2017-Dec 2019). The results showed no significant change in the rates of PTB or VLBW between the two time periods.

Summary: This study explored the association between the time from the first extubation to reintubation and the occurrence of moderate-to-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) or death in very low birth weight infants. The findings showed that reintubation within 72 hours after the initial extubation was independently associated with an increased likelihood of moderate-to-severe BPD/death and death, while reintubation within the first 48 hours post-extubation posed the greatest risk.

Summary: The delayed introduction of progressive enteral feeds beyond four days after birth may not reduce the risk of necrotising enterocolitis or death in very preterm or VLBW infants. It may slightly reduce feed intolerance and probably increase the risk of invasive infection.

Summary: The metabolism of choline in critical organs during rapid growth is poorly understood. This study investigated the kinetics of D9-choline and its metabolites in various organs of 14-day-old rats. The findings suggest that exogenous choline is rapidly metabolized to PC by all organs, with the liver supplying the brain and lung with PC via plasma. The conversion of choline to betaine feeds the one-carbon pool and should be taken into account when calculating choline requirements.
