Background. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an emerging tool to assess organ-specific iron load in patients with transfusion dependent anemia. Objective. We performed MRI T2 star (T2*) assessment in 44 transfusion dependent patients to Study the prevalence of cardiac and liver iron overload and the relationship of T2* measurement with various clinical and biochemical parameters. Result. Mean age of the study subjects was 19.9 years (range 8.8-32-3) and the mean cardiac T2* was 23.4 +/- 13.8 msec. Fifty percent of the Subjects had abnormal cardiac T2* (below 20 msec). Cardiac T2* was not found to have any correlation with serum ferritin or liver T2*. Liver T2* value was abnormal in 79% of the subjects and it correlated inversely with both current and 12 months average serum ferritin (r =-0.44, P=0.003; r=-0.46, P=0.002). Clinical parameters including age, duration of transfusion, age starting iron chelation therapy, and ratio between transfusion volume and desferrioxamine dosage were not correlated with cardiac and liver T2*. Conclusion. We conclude that iron overload in heart and liver is common in our transfusion dependent patients. Liver T2* has inverse correlation with serum ferritin. Cardiac T2* does not have any correlation with the various clinical and biochemical parameters. Pediatr Blood Cancer 2009;53:1054-1059. (C) 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the risk of future cerebrovascular events in patients with ischemic stroke (IS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA) and cortical superficial siderosis (cSS), as well as the benefits and safety of antithrombotic drugs for secondary prevention. The study found that cSS was associated with an increased risk of stroke, and the risk of IS was higher than that of intracranial hemorrhage (ICrH) in patients receiving antiplatelet or anticoagulant treatment alone, while the risk of ICrH was higher than that of IS in patients receiving both treatments. Therefore, the study suggests that using antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs alone is safe in patients with cSS, but combined antithrombotic therapy might be hazardous.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the craniofacial phenotype of Chinese prepubertal children with and without obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using a quantitative photographic analysis technique and to develop a prediction model for OSA diagnosis based on the photogrammetric data. Potential ethnic differences in the association between OSA and photogrammetric data between Chinese and Caucasian children were also examined. The results showed significant differences in craniofacial features between different OSA groups in prepubertal children, and a prediction model based on clinical measurements and photogrammetric features achieved a good performance in OSA diagnosis.

Summary: Accurate and automatic segmentation of medical images is increasingly demanded for disease diagnosis and surgical planning. This study proposed a two-stage medical image segmentation framework based on contour-aware CNN and voting strategy, which considered contour information and meaningful learning order. Experimental results showed that the proposed framework outperformed recent popular models, achieving compelling performance with dice coefficients of 91.2 +/- 2.6% for the CHAOS dataset and 88.2 +/- 0.4% for the hippocampus dataset.

Summary: Young survivors of bone tumors and soft-tissue sarcoma are at risk of cognitive impairment. Physical inactivity, smoking, and long working hours are associated with worse attention and executive function among survivors. Chronic health conditions coupled with continued physical inactivity may exacerbate cognitive dysfunction.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the incidence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of avascular necrosis (AVN) among Chinese children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The results showed that the incidence of AVN in Chinese ALL patients was comparable to Western population studies. Age was identified as the most important risk factor, with a significantly higher incidence in adolescents above 10 years old compared to those below 10 years old. Treatment protocol, immunophenotype, and gender were not predictive of AVN.

Summary: This study evaluated the associations of biomarkers of inflammation with attention and neurobehavioral outcomes in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The results suggest that cancer-related inflammation may be a mechanism underlying neurobehavioral problems in pediatric ALL survivors.

Summary: Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, tuberculosis remains a major public health threat worldwide. In pediatric populations, tuberculosis is a leading cause of infectious chest diseases and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in children is challenging due to the difficulty in obtaining microbiological confirmation, often requiring a combination of clinical and radiological findings. Presumptive diagnosis of central nervous system tuberculosis heavily relies on imaging. Despite improved diagnostic and therapeutic methods, tuberculosis continues to be a significant global public health threat. In children, it is a major cause of infectious chest diseases and is particularly detrimental in low- and middle-income countries. Diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in children is difficult, often relying on clinical and radiological findings. Presumptive diagnosis of central nervous system tuberculosis heavily depends on imaging.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of randomly generated irrelevant features on MRI radiomics feature selection and performance. The results show that while the inclusion of random features slightly affects feature selection, it does not have a substantial impact on the performance of MRI radiomics models.
