Summary: This study assessed the evidence for prophylactic strategies targeting pediatric postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and found that most of the data is based on pharmacologic interventions, with limited research on nonpharmacologic or mixed interventions. The use of appropriate assessment tools can help standardize research on pediatric PONV prophylaxis, and concurrently evaluating pain and adverse effects associated with PONV may further inform our understanding of this complex clinical entity.

Summary: Despite 20 years of fasting guidelines, many surgical patients still do not adhere to preoperative fasting recommendations and face issues with postoperative resumption of oral intake. Encouraging patients to comply with fasting and resuming eating according to the recommended time frames is necessary for improvement.

Summary: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), postoperative vomiting (POV), post-discharge nausea and vomiting (PDNV), and opioid-induced nausea and vomiting (OINV) are significant causes of morbidity, delayed discharge, and unplanned hospital admission in pediatric patients. Using a multimodal approach for pain and antiemetic therapy can help reduce the risk of these adverse reactions in children.

Summary: This study found that female patients with a history of severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (SNVP) were more likely to experience PONV after breast cancer surgery, with a higher incidence of severe PONV, increased need for rescue antiemetic, and lower satisfaction levels compared to those with mild nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (MNVP).

Summary: The study found that subhypnotic propofol infusion during general balanced anesthesia is not associated with a reduction in the incidence of PONV during PACU stay and within the first 24 hours after surgery. However, it is associated with a shorter length of hospital stay and longer time-to-extubation, although the differences in both outcomes were not clinically significant.

Summary: Maintenance of anesthesia with volatile anesthetics is a major risk factor for PONV, with no interaction between fentanyl and volatile anesthetics. Controlling the use of volatile anesthetics can significantly reduce the risk of PONV.

Summary: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common adverse event after general anesthesia. Intraoperative therapeutic suggestions can significantly reduce the incidence of PONV, especially in high-risk patients. This method has the advantages of low cost and minimal side effects.

Summary: Despite the availability of multiple types of antiemetics, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) remains a significant issue for patients. Enhanced recovery protocols and PONV management guidelines now focus on assessing individual patient risk and using antiemetics to prevent PONV. The neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1R) has emerged as a therapeutic target for PONV management, and this review discusses its role, as well as the pharmacologic properties of NK1R antagonists (NK1RAs) and their clinical evidence for PONV prophylaxis.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found that opioid-free anesthesia is associated with a lower risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting compared to opioid anesthesia. It also provides adequate postoperative analgesia without interfering with postoperative awakening. However, it did not significantly affect the time to extubation and first postoperative rescue analgesia.

Summary: The risk for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is similar between gravid and non-gravid women, although anesthesiologists administer fewer prophylactic antiemetics to gravid women during non-obstetric surgery. Gravid women have longer hospital lengths of stay despite shorter surgical duration.

Summary: The study found that high percent normal saline administration is associated with delayed graft function in kidney transplant recipients. For deceased donor transplants, the incidence of delayed graft function was higher in the high normal saline group. Similarly, for living donor transplants, the incidence of delayed graft function was also higher in the high normal saline group.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of introducing formal EBM instruction using the Turkish adaptation of the Fresno Test on students' knowledge and skills. Results showed that the program effectively improved students' EBM knowledge and skills, with high satisfaction ratings. It is recommended to offer the program as an elective course during the third year of medical school.

Summary: This case report describes a severe heat stroke caused by prolonged sun exposure in a closed glass cabin. The article discusses patient treatment, lab results, and complications, as well as reviewing the current literature on heat stroke. Prompt reduction of body temperature is the most important treatment, with cold water immersion being the best method. Heat stroke can cause damage to multiple organs and systems, leading to neurological deficits, cardiovascular failure, liver failure, and kidney failure. In addition to physical cooling, there is currently no specific treatment to prevent secondary damage, so supportive care and ICU monitoring should be provided.
