Focal adhesion kinase (FAK), a non-receptor tyrosine kinase protein, acts as an early modulator of integrin signaling cascade, regulating basic cellular functions. In transformed cells, unopposed FAK signaling has been considered to promote tumor growth, progression and metastasis. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical significance of FAK expression in the two distinct histological types of human gastric neoplasia. FAK expression was assessed immunohistochemically in tumoral samples of 66 gastric adenocarcinoma cases, 30 intestinal and 36 diffuse type, and was statistically analyzed in relation to various clinicopathological characteristics, tumor proliferative capacity and patients' survival. In intestinal type carcinomas, enhanced FAK expression was significantly associated with increased tumor proliferative capacity (P = 0.012). In diffuse type carcinomas, FAK staining intensity was significantly correlated with tumor size (P = 0.026) and disease stage (P = 0.024), presenting also a borderline association with nodal status (P = 0.053). In diffuse type carcinomas, enhanced FAK expression was significantly associated with longer overall survival times (log-rank test, P = 0.014), being also identified as an independent prognostic factor in multivariate analysis (Cox regression, P = 0.016). In contrast, patients with intestinal type tumors and enhanced FAK expression were characterized by shorter overall survival times, without though reaching statistical significance (log-rank test, P = 0.092). The current data support evidence that FAK protein may be considered as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in gastric neoplasia. Further studies conducted on larger clinical samples and highlighting on the distinct impact of the two histological types are warranted to delineate the clinical significance of FAK protein in gastric neoplasia.

How to improve food waste management in hospitals through focussing on the four most common measures for reducing plate waste

Georgios Antasouras, Georgios K. Vasios, Christos Kontogiorgis, Zacharias Ioannou, Efthymios Poulios, Georgia-Eirini Deligiannidou, Andreas Y. Troumbis, Constantinos Giaginis

Summary: Hospitals have traditionally had higher food waste than other areas of food supply, which has negative impacts on health, economy, society, and the environment. Plate waste, uneaten food served to patients, is a major contributor to this problem. Flexible portion sizes, selective menus, additional nutritional support, and improved ordering and delivery systems have been recommended as common measures to reduce plate waste. Further research is needed to establish effective approaches for minimizing food waste in hospitals.

Eleni Pavlidou, Maria Mantzorou, Maria Tolia, Georgios Antasouras, Antigoni Poutsidi, Evmorfia Psara, Efthymios Poulios, Aristeidis Fasoulas, Georgios K. Vasios, Constantinos Giaginis

Summary: This study aimed to assess the risk of developing childhood asthma in preschool age due to childhood overweight and obesity and abnormal birth anthropometric measures. The results showed that childhood overweight/obesity was associated with a 76% higher risk of childhood asthma compared to normal weight children. Abnormal birth anthropometric measures, such as birth weight, length, and head circumference, were also independently associated with higher odds of childhood asthma.

Summary: This study explores the associations between nutritional status and health-related quality of life, physical activity, and sleep quality in older exclusively Caucasian adults from Greec. The results show that a better nutritional status is significantly and independently associated with higher physical activity levels, better quality of life, and better sleep quality. Further intervention studies are needed to clarify the associations and test the feasibility of improving the nutritional status, physical activity levels, and sleep quality of the elderly.

Natural Functional Foods as a Part of the Mediterranean Lifestyle and Their Association with Psychological Resilience and Other Health-Related Parameters

Efstratios Christodoulou, Georgia-Eirini Deligiannidou, Christos Kontogiorgis, Constantinos Giaginis, Antonios E. Koutelidakis

Summary: This study explored the relationship between Natural Functional Foods (NFFs) and the Mediterranean Diet (MD) and Mediterranean Lifestyle (MEDILIFE) in Greece, as well as their association with Psychological Resilience (PsyR) and other health-related parameters. The results showed a significant association between NFFs grown and produced in the Mediterranean region and the MD and MEDILIFE. These NFFs also had a positive effect on PsyR, sleep quality, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Maria Mentzelou, Sousana K. Papadopoulou, Dimitrios Papandreou, Maria Spanoudaki, Antonios Dakanalis, Georgios K. Vasios, Gavriela Voulgaridou, Eleni Pavlidou, Maria Mantzorou, Constantinos Giaginis

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive review of the relationship between circadian rhythms and sleep, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders. It found that circadian misalignment is associated with an increased risk of metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and poor sleep quality. Managing factors that disrupt the optimal function of circadian clocks can reduce the risk of these diseases and improve sleep quality.

Summary: Aging is a physical process that affects both humans and nature. It is characterized by changes in body composition, such as increased fat mass and decreased muscle mass, strength, and bone density. These alterations impact physical performance and increase the risk of non-communicable diseases, immobility, and disability. Our study aims to explore the interconnection between adipose tissue, muscle, and bone, in order to better understand and treat the triad muscle-bone-adipose tissue disorders that occur with aging.

The Global Growth of 'Sustainable Diet' during Recent Decades, a Bibliometric Analysis

Maria Gialeli, Andreas Y. Troumbis, Constantinos Giaginis, Sousana K. Papadopoulou, Ioannis Antoniadis, Georgios K. Vasios

Summary: The concept of sustainable diets (SDs) refers to diets that promote environmental health, ensure food and nutrition security, and support a healthy lifestyle in humans. International events have played a significant role in promoting the importance of SDs and increasing knowledge and awareness among scientists and policymakers. This study is the first to analyze the trends and turning points in SDs research using bibliometric analysis, revealing the exponential growth in literature on SDs since 2009, with a focus on climate change, food systems, and health. The Mediterranean Diet (MD) emerged as the most popular dietary pattern among local SDs, with collaborations and partnerships between countries contributing to research advancements. Overall, this study maps the expansion of knowledge on SDs over the past 36 years and highlights the impact of international events on scientific research.

Maria Spanoudaki, Constantinos Giaginis, Dimitra Karafyllaki, Konstantinos Papadopoulos, Evangelos Solovos, Georgios Antasouras, Georgios Sfikas, Athanasios N. Papadopoulos, Sousana K. Papadopoulou

Summary: This review study examines the molecular basis of the relationship between cancer and exercise, evaluating the most well-established molecular mechanisms of exercise against cancer development and progression. The study found that exercise may reduce cancer risk and/or progression through mechanisms such as the metabolic profile of hormones, reduction of systemic inflammation, increase in insulin sensitivity, augmentation of antioxidant capacity, boost to the immune system, and direct effect on tumors. There is substantial evidence that exercise can predict a stronger association with cancer and can be embedded in cancer clinical practice to improve disease progression and prognosis.

Summary: This study described the impact of radical practice and perceived changes on cancer patients' mental well-being and investigated potential outcome descriptors. The results showed that anxiety and depression were statistically associated with low mental well-being. Mild to more severe anxiety was related to mental health conditions and cancer stage. 36.2% of participants were considered to have depression, which was related to older age, previous mental health conditions, concerns about the impact of COVID-19 on cancer treatment, and perception of the pandemic affecting mental health. Most participants had a good well-being score.
